The Billionaire Who Stole His Wife

Chapter 41: Before Midnight

  • Next Chapter

For the first time in years, Lucian Calloway looked truly unprepared.

Not weak.

Not uncertain.

Just... unprepared for the speed at which his life was rearranging itself.

One hour ago, he’d been planning a rescue operation.

Now?

He was standing in the middle of the safe house war room while Adrian Croft calmly arranged an emergency marriage like he was scheduling a board meeting.

And somehow—

Somehow—

Lucian was the least terrifying person in the room.

⸻

Lucian

"Fuel the jet completely," Lucian said into the phone as he strode toward the private study. "I want wheels up within ninety minutes."

The pilot answered immediately. "Yes, sir."

"Security team?"

"Already assembling."

"Good."

Lucian ended the call and braced one hand against the desk for half a second.

Just half.

Because the second he stopped moving, his thoughts caught up.

Switzerland.

The child.

Vivienne.

Allison.

Marriage.

His jaw tightened.

A soft knock came against the open door.

Lucian looked up.

Allison stood there wrapped in one of his black sweaters, sleeves hanging over her hands slightly. Her curls were still damp from the rain and hurried shower Nora practically forced on her after the kidnapping.

There was a bruise blooming faintly near her shoulder.

Lucian hated it instantly.

Allison leaned against the doorway.

"You look like you’re preparing to invade a small country."

"I might."

"That’s comforting."

His gaze moved over her automatically.

Checking.

Bruises.

Wrists.

Breathing.

Alive.

Still alive.

The realization hit him again with enough force to make his chest ache.

Allison noticed.

Of course she noticed.

She walked inside slowly.

"You’re doing that thing again."

Lucian frowned slightly. "What thing?"

"The emotionally constipated billionaire stare."

His mouth almost twitched.

Almost.

"You were kidnapped."

"You’ve mentioned."

His voice lowered.

"They touched you."

Allison’s expression softened just slightly.

"Lucian."

He looked away first.

Because if he looked at her too long right now, he might say something reckless.

Something honest.

Too honest.

Allison stepped closer.

"I’m okay."

"No," he said quietly. "You’re pretending to be okay because you think everyone else is one bad conversation away from collapsing."

Silence.

Her eyes widened slightly.

Annoying man.

Accurate man.

Allison sighed softly. "Maybe."

Lucian looked back at her then.

"You don’t have to do that with me."

Something dangerous flickered low in her chest.

Because he said things like that so calmly.

Like they weren’t capable of wrecking her emotionally.

She crossed her arms.

"Well unfortunately for both of us, emotional repression is part of my charm."

"That explains why Theo likes you."

Allison barked out a surprised laugh.

"There it is. Jealousy."

Lucian’s expression went flat immediately. "I’m not jealous."

"Sure."

"I’m not."

"You looked ready to throw him through a wall at breakfast three days ago."

"He was flirting with you."

"He flirts with everyone."

"He specifically enjoys irritating me."

"That sounds personal."

"It is."

Allison grinned faintly.

Lucian stared at her for one long second.

Then his gaze dropped briefly to her mouth.

The room changed instantly.

Again.

It kept happening.

This unbearable pull between them that showed up in the middle of chaos like it owned the place.

Allison noticed the shift immediately.

So did Lucian.

Which somehow made it worse.

Her voice lowered.

"We really don’t know how to pick romantic timing."

"No," he admitted quietly.

The air between them tightened.

One step closer and it would become something else entirely.

Then Adrian’s voice cut clean through the moment from the hallway.

"Lucian."

Allison groaned softly. "Amazing. My father has supernatural emotional interruption timing."

Lucian stepped back immediately.

Which irritated Allison more than it should have.

Adrian entered without apology.

Of course.

He looked between them once.

Too observant.

Too calm.

"I spoke with the minister."

Allison blinked.

"The what?"

"The minister," Adrian repeated. "He’ll arrive in twenty minutes."

Allison stared at him.

"You moved disturbingly fast."

Adrian looked genuinely confused. "Why would I move slowly?"

Simone appeared behind him suddenly holding tea.

"I just want everyone to know this is the wildest rich-people behavior I’ve ever witnessed."

Theo leaned against the hallway wall behind her.

"Really? Not the secret-child blackmail?"

"No," Simone said. "Emergency billionaire marriage before international revenge travel is objectively crazier."

Allison pointed at her. "Exactly."

Adrian ignored both of them.

"We do this before Switzerland."

Lucian looked at Allison carefully.

Her expression was unreadable now.

Not panicked.

Not overwhelmed.

Thinking.

Always thinking.

Adrian continued.

"Once the marriage is legal, I can move publicly."

Allison’s eyes shifted toward him.

"Meaning?"

"Meaning," Adrian said calmly, "Vivienne loses the ability to frame you as temporary."

Theo’s expression sharpened slightly.

Adrian stepped further into the room.

"If Lucian and Allison are legally married, then Croft and Calloway become formally aligned. Every board, investor, media outlet, and political connection will interpret it the same way."

Simone whispered dramatically, "Power couple apocalypse."

Adrian continued like she hadn’t spoken.

"Vivienne’s leverage depended heavily on uncertainty. She loses that the second this marriage becomes public."

Lucian’s gaze remained on Allison.

"This only matters if you want it."

Allison looked at him slowly.

"You keep saying that like it helps."

"Does it?"

"No," she admitted. "It makes you more attractive, which is currently inconvenient."

Theo choked laughing.

Lucian’s expression finally cracked slightly.

Tiny.

But there.

Adrian looked impatient now.

"Focus."

Allison pointed toward him immediately.

"You are alarmingly unromantic."

"This is romance," Adrian said flatly. "You like each other and the union strategically devastates your enemies."

Simone almost dropped her tea laughing.

Theo covered his face.

Even Lucian looked horrified.

Allison stared at her father.

"Oh my God."

Adrian frowned slightly. "What?"

"That may genuinely be how you think love works."

Susanna Croft chose that exact moment to walk in.

Elegant.

Perfectly dressed.

Carrying enough emotional exhaustion for everyone.

"Unfortunately," Susanna said dryly, "that is exactly how your father thinks love works."

Adrian looked at his wife.

"You married me."

"You kidnapped me emotionally with persistence and financial competence."

Theo whispered, "I understand Lucian now."

Lucian ignored him completely.

Susanna crossed the room toward Allison immediately, hands lifting gently to cup her daughter’s face.

Her expression softened at the bruises.

"My baby."

Allison melted slightly at the words despite herself.

"I’m okay."

"You were kidnapped."

"Temporarily."

Susanna looked unimpressed. "That is not comforting."

Then her gaze shifted toward Lucian.

And softened.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

"You stayed with her," Susanna said quietly.

Lucian answered immediately. "Always."

The room went still.

Allison’s pulse betrayed her instantly again.

Simone noticed and looked thrilled.

Theo noticed and looked annoyed with himself for noticing.

Adrian noticed and immediately weaponized it.

"Good," Adrian said. "Then marry her."

Allison threw her hands into the air.

"Dad!"

⸻

Forty Minutes Later

The minister looked deeply confused.

Not frightened.

Not suspicious.

Just confused in the specific way normal people became when suddenly surrounded by billionaires, armed security, emergency international travel plans, and a bride wearing leggings and an oversized black sweater.

Nora had tried to get Allison into something prettier.

Allison refused.

"If I’m getting unexpectedly married during an active criminal conspiracy, I’m at least being comfortable."

Simone supported this fully.

Lucian, meanwhile, somehow still looked devastatingly composed in black slacks and a dark button-down despite the fact that he had slept maybe forty minutes total in the last twenty-four hours.

Which was unfair.

Deeply unfair.

The safe house library had been cleared quickly for the ceremony.

Candles lit.

Documents prepared.

Security outside every entrance.

Romantic in the most psychologically concerning way possible.

Allison stood near the fireplace while Simone adjusted her curls dramatically.

"You look hot," Simone whispered.

"That’s not the goal."

"It should be."

Across the room, Theo stood beside Lucian.

Watching him carefully.

"You’re serious," Theo said quietly.

Lucian looked toward Allison.

She laughed softly at something Simone whispered.

The sound hit him directly in the chest.

"Yes," he answered simply.

Theo studied him.

Then nodded once.

"Good."

Lucian looked at him.

Theo’s mouth curved faintly.

"Because if this was strategy only, I’d punch you myself."

Lucian almost smiled.

Almost.

Adrian approached then, holding several documents.

"Marriage certificate. Asset protection amendments. International recognition authorization."

Theo blinked slowly.

"Nothing says romance like paperwork."

Adrian handed Lucian a pen.

"Sign here."

Lucian took it automatically.

Then paused.

Not because of fear.

Because suddenly—

This was real.

Not hypothetical.

Not strategic.

Real.

He looked up.

Allison was watching him now.

Their eyes met across the room.

And despite the insanity around them—

Everything quieted.

Lucian walked toward her slowly.

Allison’s heart pounded harder with every step.

"You okay?" he asked softly.

She looked up at him.

"No," she admitted honestly. "But weirdly not because of you."

His expression softened.

"That’s reassuring."

She exhaled shakily.

"This is insane."

"Yes."

"We’re getting married before chasing a missing child across countries because your ex-friend forged you into a paternity scandal."

"When you say it out loud, it sounds stressful."

Allison laughed softly.

Then looked at him carefully.

"Last chance to run."

Lucian’s eyes held hers steadily.

"Not happening."

The minister cleared his throat awkwardly.

"Should we begin?"

Simone whispered loudly, "Please say yes before I combust."

Susanna smacked her lightly with affection.

The ceremony itself was surprisingly simple.

No audience.

No grand ballroom.

No media.

Just truth.

The minister spoke carefully while rain tapped softly against the windows.

Lucian never looked away from Allison.

Not once.

And Allison—

Allison realized halfway through the vows that she wasn’t scared of marrying him.

She was scared of how much she already wanted him to stay.

That realization terrified her more than kidnappings.

When the minister finally said—

"Do you, Lucian Calloway—"

Lucian answered before the sentence fully ended.

"Yes."

Simone made a choking emotional sound.

Theo muttered, "Subtle."

Then the minister turned to Allison.

"And do you—"

Allison looked at Lucian.

At the exhaustion in his eyes.

The calm beneath the violence.

The way he had looked at her after the kidnapping like the world had almost ended.

Then she smiled faintly.

"Yeah," she said softly. "I do."

Lucian’s breath actually caught.

Tiny.

But real.

The minister smiled nervously.

"Then by the authority vested in me—"

Adrian’s phone buzzed.

Everyone froze.

Adrian checked the screen.

His expression changed instantly.

"What?" Lucian asked.

Adrian looked up slowly.

"The airport."

The room sharpened immediately.

Elias moved first. "Problem?"

Adrian’s voice turned cold.

"Vivienne leaked our flight plan."

Silence.

Then another message hit Elias’s tablet.

He looked down.

And went pale.

"Not just the flight plan."

Lucian stepped forward. "What now?"

Elias swallowed hard.

"Someone just issued an international alert claiming Allison Croft was kidnapped by Lucian Calloway."

The room exploded into motion.

Simone screamed, "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?"

Theo swore viciously.

Lucian’s eyes turned deadly.

But Adrian—

Adrian smiled.

Slowly.

Terrifyingly.

Allison blinked.

"Why are you smiling?"

Adrian slid his phone into his pocket.

"Because," he said calmly, "Vivienne just moved too early."

Lucian’s gaze sharpened.

Adrian looked toward Elias.

"Release the marriage announcement."

Allison’s stomach dropped.

"Dad—"

Adrian’s smile widened slightly.

"Globally."
