The Billionaire Who Stole His Wife
Chapter 29: So what’s next?
Adrian & Lucian
Adrian didn’t look up when Lucian entered the study.
He didn’t need to.
The moment the door opened, he already knew who it was. The footsteps were too controlled to be Simone’s, too heavy to be Allison’s, and far too cautious for Elias.
Lucian closed the door behind him with quiet care.
Adrian kept his attention on the files spread across the desk.
"I was wondering how long you planned on standing outside my daughter’s room."
Lucian’s jaw tightened.
He said nothing.
Adrian finally lifted his eyes.
Sharp. Calm. Unforgiving.
Lucian didn’t bother lying.
"I needed to speak with her."
Adrian leaned back slightly in his chair.
"At midnight?"
"She was upset."
"She’s been upset for weeks."
Lucian held his gaze.
"That doesn’t mean I should ignore it."
For a moment, the room went still.
Adrian studied him.
Not like a father meeting his daughter’s suitor.
Like a man deciding whether another man was a liability.
Then he closed one of the folders in front of him.
"You’re involved with her."
It wasn’t a question.
Lucian answered anyway.
"Yes."
Adrian’s expression didn’t change.
"How involved?"
Lucian inhaled slowly.
"Enough that I won’t walk away."
Adrian stood.
The movement was smooth, but there was nothing gentle about it. He walked around the desk and stopped beside the long table where legal papers, bank trails, photos, and printed call logs were arranged with precise order.
"Good," Adrian said.
Lucian narrowed his eyes slightly.
"That’s all?"
"No." Adrian looked at him. "That’s the beginning."
Lucian stepped closer to the table.
Adrian tapped one finger against a file marked with Sharon’s name.
"If you are with my daughter, then you understand what that means."
"I do."
"No, Lucian." Adrian’s voice cut through the room like a blade. "You understand business. You understand power. You understand what happens when people get cornered and desperate. But Allison is not one of your companies. She is not a deal you can restructure when things get difficult."
Lucian’s expression hardened, but he didn’t interrupt.
Adrian continued, "She becomes a target the second the wrong people realize she matters to you."
Lucian’s voice lowered.
"She already matters to me."
"That wasn’t my question."
Lucian met his stare.
"She already is a target."
Adrian nodded once, as if that was the only acceptable answer.
"Exactly. Which means we move before they do."
The shift was immediate.
Personal to strategic.
Emotion to war.
Adrian picked up a folder and handed it to Lucian.
"Sharon is secured for now. Temporary location. Private security posted. No staff rotation unless I approve it personally. Her phone has been replaced. The old one is being mirrored and reviewed."
Lucian opened the folder, scanning the first page.
"She agreed to give a statement?"
"She agreed to talk." Adrian’s mouth tightened. "There’s a difference."
Lucian looked up.
"Then we make her feel safe enough to tell the truth."
Adrian watched him closely.
"We don’t make her feel anything. We give her options, confirm her claims, and document every word. Feelings don’t hold up in court. Evidence does."
Lucian nodded.
"Then we get the timeline. Dates, calls, payments, meetings, threats, anything tying Vivienne to Anthony."
"And we verify it," Adrian said immediately. "I don’t destroy people on gossip."
"No," Lucian said, his voice colder now. "But when the proof is there, you destroy them completely."
For the first time that night, a faint hint of approval crossed Adrian’s face.
"Now you’re listening."
Lucian set the file down.
"Vivienne is funding Anthony."
"Allegedly."
"She is."
Adrian’s eyes sharpened.
"Then prove it."
Lucian’s jaw flexed.
"I will."
"Good. Because when we move on Vivienne, we do not miss. I don’t care how polished she is. I don’t care how many charity boards her family sits on. I don’t care how many society women would faint at the idea of her name being dragged through dirt. If she put money behind Anthony to hurt my daughter, she becomes dirt."
Lucian’s gaze turned lethal.
"And Anthony?"
Adrian picked up another file and tossed it onto the table.
"Anthony is already bleeding. Sharon’s statement makes the wound deeper. Vivienne’s money trail cuts off his oxygen. Once we prove fraud, coercion, and conspiracy, he won’t have enough reputation left to beg with."
Lucian’s voice was quiet.
"He doesn’t recover from this."
Adrian looked at him.
"No," he said. "He doesn’t."
A heavy silence settled between them.
Not hostile.
Not friendly either.
Measured.
Then Adrian changed direction so abruptly that Lucian almost missed it.
"When are you going to propose?"
Lucian looked up.
For the first time all night, he seemed genuinely caught off guard.
Adrian’s face remained completely serious.
Lucian blinked once.
"That’s what you want to discuss right now?"
"That is what I asked."
Lucian stared at him.
"We’re in the middle of planning legal retaliation, security protection, and exposing a conspiracy."
"And my daughter is sleeping upstairs after letting you into her room at midnight." Adrian’s voice stayed flat. "So yes, Lucian. I’m asking."
Lucian exhaled through his nose, then looked away for half a second.
That half second was enough.
Adrian caught it.
"You haven’t asked her."
"No."
"Do you plan to?"
Lucian’s eyes returned to his.
"Yes."
"When?"
Lucian’s throat moved.
"When she’s ready."
Adrian’s expression hardened.
"That sounds pretty. It also sounds like an excuse."
"It isn’t."
"Then explain it."
Lucian was silent for a moment.
Then his voice dropped.
"I don’t want her to feel trapped."
Adrian didn’t respond.
So Lucian continued.
"She has spent too long being used by people who dressed control up as love. I won’t be another man putting a ring in front of her and calling it protection when it feels like a cage."
Adrian watched him carefully.
Lucian’s face was composed, but his hands weren’t. One had curled into a fist at his side.
"I want to marry her," Lucian said. "Not because of Anthony. Not because of Vivienne. Not because it makes a legal strategy cleaner. I want her because I love her. And when I ask, I want her to know she can say yes because she wants me, not because she needs saving."
The room went quiet.
Adrian’s gaze didn’t soften.
But something in it shifted.
Slightly.
"You love her?"
"Yes."
"No hesitation."
"There is none."
Adrian stepped closer.
"Then understand me clearly. Love does not impress me unless it comes with discipline."
Lucian held still.
Adrian pointed toward the ceiling, toward the room where Allison was.
"My daughter does not need a man who burns hot for a few nights and disappears when the consequences show up. She does not need grand promises. She does not need expensive gifts replacing emotional honesty. She needs consistency. Protection. Respect. And a man who knows when to lead without dragging her behind him."
Lucian’s voice was steady.
"I know."
"No," Adrian said coldly. "You’re learning."
Lucian accepted that without argument.
Adrian studied him for another long second.
Then he asked, "What happens if she gets scared?"
Lucian answered immediately.
"I stay."
"What happens if she pushes you away?"
"I stay close enough for her to know I’m there, far enough that she doesn’t feel cornered."
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
"And if loving you makes her a bigger target?"
Lucian’s expression darkened.
"Then I make sure anyone aiming at her regrets raising their hand."
Adrian gave a small nod.
"That answer I like."
Lucian looked back at the files.
"We visit Sharon in the morning."
"Yes," Adrian said. "You, me, Allison, Simone. No unnecessary audience."
"Elias should coordinate backup."
"He already is."
Lucian glanced at him.
Adrian gave him a dry look.
"You’re not the only man in this house who knows how to prepare."
Despite himself, Lucian almost smiled.
Almost.
Adrian noticed.
"Don’t get comfortable."
The almost-smile vanished.
"Yes, sir."
Adrian returned to the desk and picked up a pen.
"Sharon gives her statement. We confirm what can be confirmed immediately. If she has recordings, we duplicate them. If she has messages, we preserve metadata. If she has names, we run them. No emotional reactions in the room. Allison can ask questions, but she does not negotiate alone."
Lucian nodded.
"Agreed."
"And if Sharon is lying?"
"Then we find out before anyone makes a move."
"Good."
Adrian signed something, then paused.
His voice lowered.
"But if Sharon is telling the truth, and Vivienne has been feeding Anthony money to destroy Allison..."
Lucian’s gaze sharpened.
Adrian looked up.
"Then I want them both boxed in before dinner tomorrow."
Lucian didn’t hesitate.
"Done."
Adrian set the pen down.
For a long moment, neither man spoke.
Then Adrian said, quieter but no less firm, "You don’t get to be the reason she falls apart."
Lucian looked at him.
"I won’t be."
"That is not a vow you make once. That is a decision you make every day."
Lucian’s voice softened, but his eyes didn’t.
"I understand."
Adrian held his stare.
"I hope you do. Because Allison may be strong, but strong women still break when the wrong people keep asking them to survive everything alone."
Lucian swallowed.
The words hit harder than he expected.
"I won’t leave her alone."
Adrian nodded once.
Not approval.
Not yet.
Permission to continue.
"Then prove it."
Lucian straightened.
"I will."
Adrian looked him over again, measuring the man in front of him against the daughter upstairs he would burn the world to protect.
Finally, he said, "And Lucian?"
"Yes?"
"When you propose, don’t make it a spectacle."
Lucian paused.
Adrian’s expression stayed severe.
"She hates being cornered. She notices details. She likes sincerity even when she pretends not to. And if you put my daughter in front of a room full of people and force her to smile through something that should belong to her, I’ll make sure the engagement is the least painful thing you lose."
Lucian stared at him.
Then, slowly, he nodded.
"Understood."
Adrian sat back down and opened another file.
"Good."
The conversation was over.
Lucian turned toward the door.
His hand was on the knob when Adrian spoke again.
"One more thing."
Lucian stopped.
Adrian didn’t look up.
"If you hurt her, none of your money will protect you."
Lucian looked back.
"I know."
Adrian finally lifted his gaze.
"No," he said calmly. "You don’t. But I’m sure you’re smart enough not to find out."
Lucian held his stare.
Then gave one firm nod.
"Good night, Adrian."
"Morning comes fast," Adrian replied. "Be ready."
Lucian left the study quietly.
Behind him, Adrian remained seated beneath the low amber light, surrounded by files, evidence, and the beginnings of a war.
Upstairs, Allison slept.
Downstairs, the men who loved her in very different ways prepared to make sure the people coming for her finally learned the cost.
And in Adrian Croft’s house, nothing was given freely.
Trust was earned.
Love was tested.
And protection came with teeth.
