The Apocalypse Took Everything, This Time I Hoard It All First
Chapter 178: Injured
Chapter 178: Chapter 178: Injured
Because the spiritual entity zombie shifted its primary attack toward Luna Dawson, the piercing pain in Kevin Keane and the others’ minds vanished instantly, finally allowing them a brief moment to catch their breath.
They exchanged a glance and unhesitatingly unleashed their superpowers to the absolute limit. Lightning strikes like divine retribution, all-consuming flames, fierce whirlwinds, and ice blades, coupled with a dense barrage of metal throwing knives, all blasted toward the child zombie!
The moment the various superpowers violently collided, a blindingly intense light suddenly erupted. It was so bright that everyone instinctively squinted, momentarily blinded.
An immature yet piercingly shrill howl instantly echoed around the entire convoy. The soundwaves vibrated the surrounding car windows, making them buzz. Everyone present felt their hearts sink as an inexplicable chill crept up their spines.
The instant the spiritual entity zombie distracted itself to condense a barrier against Kevin’s joint attack, the spiritual power suppression targeting Luna drastically weakened. Luna, ever so sharp, instantly seized this fleeting chance of survival!
She unhesitatingly withdrew the overlapping barriers of threads around her. Abandoning her defense, she recalled every single spiritual thread scattered around her body. Billions of spiritual power threads, as fine as hair, rapidly twisted and compressed. They ultimately formed a sharp spiritual blade that gleamed with cold light. Without the slightest hesitation, she drove it straight into the core of the child zombie’s brain!
This strike accurately hit the weak point. The child zombie clutched its head, letting out another extremely agonizing howl!
Just as the spiritual entity zombie’s head was about to collapse under the spiritual blade’s strangulation, and Luna was only one step away from completely shattering all its spiritual power—
BANG!
An abruptly bizarre gunshot fiercely tore through the clamor of the fierce battle. It sounded exceptionally ear-piercing above the noisy battlefield, instantly disrupting everyone’s rhythm.
Luna suddenly sensed an approaching danger. A rapidly spinning bullet was closing in on her. Her physical instincts reacted before her brain could process it. Without any time to turn around and see who fired the shot, she fiercely raised her left hand, and an incredibly thick, transparent water curtain explosively took shape!
This water curtain was not a thin layer, but a full one-meter-thick liquid barrier. It rose straight from the ground, seamlessly enveloping the entire Sunset Squad. Its outer edge was exactly one meter away from the squad members, leaving not a single gap!
In the next second, the high-speed spinning bullet, carrying scorching heat, slammed violently into the water curtain!
The lethal bullet, which should have pierced flesh and blood, now seemed to have plunged into transparent jelly with a density far exceeding ordinary liquid. The high temperature generated by the bullet’s rotation instantly caused the surrounding water curtain to boil. Dense strings of bubbles frantically popped along the trajectory, emitting a loud SIZZLE.
Yet, no matter how fast the bullet spun or how fierce its impact was, its forward momentum plummeted under the strong resistance of this thick water curtain. Penetrating merely a dozen centimeters, it completely exhausted all its kinetic energy. It hung in the center of the water curtain, gently swaying with the ripples, unable to advance another inch!
The shooter was clearly stunned for a moment, likely not expecting this seemingly fragile water curtain to actually withstand bullets. But immediately after, another frantic barrage of gunfire followed. Showing total disregard for the situation, the shooter unleashed their firepower with a suicidal resolve!
RAT-TAT-TAT!
RAT-TAT-TAT!
The dense gunshots merged into a continuous roar. Countless bullets rained down frantically against the water curtain like a torrential storm. However, each one met the exact same fate, completely imprisoned within the translucent water barrier.
From a distance, the thick water curtain was densely embedded with bullets. The tips gleamed with a cold, hard metallic light, yet they were completely immobilized, like insects frozen in amber. The scene was absolutely stunning! The members of Sunset Squad were entirely unharmed, their clothes untainted by even a speck of gunpowder residue. This wave of Absolute Defense directly and utterly crushed the lethal sneak attack!
However, during the brief interval when Luna devoted all her strength to maintaining the water curtain and distracted herself to block the strafing bullets, the spiritual entity zombie—which had been on the verge of collapse—seized this fleeting opening. Its residual spiritual power morphed into countless sharp needles, took advantage of her vulnerability, and viciously stabbed into Luna’s defenseless brain!
Luna’s breath hitched sharply. Her head grew heavy, and her legs instantly gave out. No longer able to stand steady on the steps, she leaned to the side and crashed heavily, a dull ache radiating through her body.
But this superficial flesh wound was not even worth mentioning compared to the excruciating pain in her mind. It felt as if tens of thousands of red-hot steel needles had simultaneously and viciously pierced her brain. Every inch of her nerves was frantically twitching and throbbing in agony. The splitting headache reached an extreme. Her vision darkened in waves, and even her consciousness began to blur.
Gritting her teeth, Luna thought, "Susan Vaughn, that bitch, actually chose to strike at this exact moment!"
"Pfft—" Luna coughed up a large mouthful of blood.
"Luna!"
"Sister!"
"Boss!"
Mrs. Dawson, Rhonda Dawson, Miles Dawson, and the rest of Sunset Squad simultaneously let out heart-wrenching screams.
Right then, a blurred afterimage swept past, so fast that its tracks couldn’t be seen. It charged straight at the child zombie that was still clinging to its last breath.
Before anyone could react, a crisp CRACK rang out. The zombie’s head was forcefully smashed into pieces. Its originally hunched body, still maintaining the posture of clutching its head, slammed stiffly onto the ground, completely devoid of life.
It was Little Sweet Potato!
Luna had instructed it long ago never to underestimate High-level spiritual entity zombies, and to deliver the finishing blow when the enemy was at its weakest. Little Sweet Potato, also at the Fourth Rank, was the true lethal weapon!
Enduring the dual agonies in her body and mind, Luna glanced at the fallen zombie to confirm the threat was eliminated. She immediately concentrated all her remaining spiritual power and launched a fierce assault into the mind of the shooter!
Lauren Grant stiffened all over. His chaotic mind instantly cleared, and the memory of firing the gun flooded back all at once. He opened his mouth in horror, his hands holding the gun trembling like a leaf. "I-I just..."
Looking at his panic-stricken state, Luna suddenly lost all her strength and slumped limply into the arms of the already deathly pale Mrs. Dawson.
Holding her daughter, Mrs. Dawson’s hands couldn’t stop trembling. Her lips quivered as she muttered almost silently, "...My Luna! Wendy! Wendy, hurry!"
At this moment, Mrs. Dawson’s mind was completely blank, leaving nothing but endless panic. Only four or five meters away, Rhonda Dawson stumbled forward. She raised her trembling hands and immediately activated her superpower to heal Luna. Her face was already a mess of tears, blurring her vision.
Kevin Keane’s eyes were bloodshot. He glared at Lauren Grant, who was still dazedly holding the gun nearby. His fury was almost tangible!
"Lauren Grant! I’ll kill you!"
He lunged forward and viciously grabbed Lauren by the throat. Giving him no chance to defend himself, Kevin dragged him toward the edge of the perimeter wall. Lauren’s feet dangled off the ground. He struggled desperately to no avail and was mercilessly thrown by Kevin into the dense horde of zombies below the wall!
"Ah! Captain... Captain Kessler, save me!"
Lauren was pounced on by the zombies, and one bit down on his arm. The agonizing pain instantly jolted his bewildered mind fully awake. Had he just impulsively shot Captain Dawson because he listened to Susan Vaughn?!
Enduring the excruciating pain in his arm, he channeled his fire superpower. Over a dozen Fireballs shot out in all directions, clearing a small empty spot, and he scrambled frantically back inside the wall.
"Susan, save me!" He immediately crawled toward the direction of Endless Squad. The instinct to survive made him scream like a madman. "Susan, save me! Susan Vaughn, save me! It was you! You told me to shoot! You said it yourself, you told me to kill Luna Dawson!"
He finally realized that just a moment ago, his mind was entirely filled with Susan’s voice repeating over and over again!
"Shoot!
"Shoot! Kill Luna Dawson!"
