The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

Chapter 59: He Loses Control

  • Next Chapter

It was Cael who was taken first.

Axel didn’t see it happen, he was managing the outer perimeter, keeping his wolves clear of the charged soil, watching the clan fighters hold the inner line with the focused attention of someone running too many calculations simultaneously. He heard it in the radio. Sable’s voice, sharp and controlled, reporting the King’s position compromised, three Hollow fighters and a containment technique that the clan fighters hadn’t seen before.

He turned and found Cael forty meters inside the tree line, down on one knee, three Hollow operatives working something around him that produced the same charged quality as the hollow ground. A localized version. A portable containment.

They hadn’t known the Hollow had that.

Reyna saw it at the same moment he did.

She moved before he could stop her.

He reached for her arm and caught air. She was already gone the full speed of a Blood Apex vampire, which was not the same category as the speed of the Hollow’s fighters. She hit the three operatives like a force of nature and two of them went down immediately, the third managing to redirect the containment technique before she broke it. The portable field shattered. Cael came back to his feet.

But the third operative had time to do something before Reyna reached him.

He drew a blade not a conventional weapon. Something that carried the same markings as the hollow ground artifacts, something that had been prepared specifically for this. He cut her across the upper arm before she put him down, and the cut wasn’t deep but it bled immediately and the blood that fell from it hit the forest floor and the ground absorbed it with a speed that was entirely wrong.

The hollow ground pulsed.

Thirty meters away, the activated artifacts responded to Reyna’s blood reaching the soil not directly within the circle, not in the quantity the ritual required, but enough. Enough for the activation to jump forward, the sequence accelerating in the way that fire accelerated when it found more fuel than expected.

The glow in the hollow ground went from cold blue-grey to something brighter.

Axel felt it in his wrist. The pre bond warmth spiked not painful, but intense, the connection between them registering the ritual’s aggression toward her with the particular alarm of a bond that had been designed to recognize exactly this kind of threat.

Then he felt something else.

It started in his chest. Not the cold signal of the pre-bond. Something different. Something that came from inside his wolf rather than from the connection between them a deep, animal response to the sight of her blood on the ground and the hollow’s ground drinking it and the ritual structure reaching toward her with the specific intention of taking everything she was and leaving nothing.

The cold focusing rage came. He had managed it on the ridge, in the training yard, at the boundary marker with the piece of window frame in his hands. He had managed it every time because the cold was manageable, was functional, was the sharpened tool he had spent twenty-nine years learning to use rather than be used by.

This was not the cold.

This was something older than the cold. Something that lived below the strategy and the discipline and the fourteen years of Alpha training in the specific depth where the wolf was not a metaphor but an actual other thing sharing his body with him. The wolf that had gone quiet and calm when Reyna touched his hand in the war room. The wolf that had oriented toward her like a compass finding north from the first night he smelled her blood on the ridge.

That wolf looked at the hollow ground drinking her blood and the ritual reaching for her and it made a sound inside him that had nothing to do with control.

He shifted without deciding to.

The shift happened in under a second faster than it had ever happened, faster than it should have been possible for a disciplined Alpha who had been maintaining human form in a tactical engagement. One moment he was standing in the forest in his own skin and the next the wolf was there, fully, completely, the grey-black form that Ashveil’s wolves ran in his particular lineage built larger and heavier than most, and the eyes that were still his eyes looking out of it.

His pack felt it.

He knew they felt it because of the way they moved the sudden realignment of every wolf in the engagement, the instinctive orientation toward the Alpha’s position with the particular attention of a pack that has felt something in their Alpha they haven’t felt before. Not the controlled dominant presence they were accustomed to. Something rawer than that.

Something that didn’t have edges.

He went toward the hollow ground.

The Hollow’s fighters in his path moved or were moved he wasn’t tracking the specifics, the wolf wasn’t interested in tracking specifics, the wolf was interested in the ritual circle and the artifacts and the activated sequence and ending all of it by the most direct available method.

He hit the edge of the charged soil and felt it resist him the same resistance his wolves had felt, the ground pushing back against his nature. He pushed through it. It cost him. He could feel the charged field working against him, pulling at his wolf’s coherence the way cold pulled at warmth, trying to disrupt the form.

He kept going.

Reyna’s voice came from somewhere to his left. "Axel." His name in her voice, sharp and present. "Axel, stop."

He didn’t stop.

"The ritual needs an Alpha’s rage in the circle," she said. Louder. Cutting through the wolf’s focus with the specific authority of someone who knew exactly what she was saying and needed it heard. "That’s the trigger. An Alpha losing control inside the activated circle completes the sequence without needing my blood directly. They planned for this."

He stopped.

Three meters from the circle’s edge. The glow of the hollow ground inches from his paws. The artifacts pulsing with the accelerated activation. The wolf straining forward against the part of him that had heard Reyna’s voice and registered the information she was delivering.

They planned for this.

He stood on the charged soil and breathed.

The breathing took everything he had.

Slowly with the particular effort of a man pulling a wolf back from the thing it had decided was necessary he brought himself back. The shift reversed. He was on his knees on the dark soil, human again, hands pressed flat against the charged ground, breathing with the full deliberate attention of someone who has just found the bottom of their control and is climbing back up from it.

Reyna was beside him.

She had her hand on his back not the pre bond contact, not the careful managed touch of the war room table. Just her hand on his back, steady and present, while he found himself again.

"I have you," she said quietly.

He looked up at the hollow ground. At the artifacts. At the ritual that was still active and still incomplete and still reaching for her with its cold specific hunger.

His jaw was tight. His hands were flat against the soil. The wolf was quiet again not gone, not suppressed, just back in the place he kept it when the situation required the man rather than the animal.

He stood up.

"Tell me how to close it," he said.

She looked at him for a moment with the deep-water eyes, and what was in them was complicated and layered and included things he would need more than the middle of a corridor engagement to address properly.

"Together," she said. "We close it together."

He nodded once.

They turned toward the hollow ground.
