The Alpha's Forbidden Bite
Chapter 58: Blood Spilled on Sacred Ground
The hollow ground came into view at the corridor’s center.
Axel saw it through the trees before they reached it the depression in the forest floor, the dark oval of old soil and low moss that both sides had known about for decades without fully understanding. Tonight it was different. The Hollow had been working in it for days, possibly longer, and what they had built transformed the space into something that the word ritual site couldn’t adequately describe.
Twelve stone artifacts arranged in a rough circle at the hollow’s edge. Each one approximately the height of a man’s knee, carved with markings that predated the truce by centuries. Between them, channels had been cut into the dark soil shallow trenches running from artifact to artifact in a geometric pattern that his eye kept trying to read as something familiar and kept failing. At the center of the circle, a depression within the depression. Smaller. More deliberate.
The place where they intended to put Reyna.
He looked at it for exactly one second before the next wave of Hollow fighters came out of the tree line to the north.
This wave was different. Bigger, twenty or more, moving in a coordinated pattern that was designed around the hollow ground’s geometry, pushing the joint force toward the circle’s edge rather than away from it. Axel understood the design immediately. They weren’t trying to win the engagement in the open forest. They were trying to herd.
"Break left," he said into the radio. "Don’t let them push us into the circle."
The left flank responded but the push was hard, harder than the earlier contact, the Hollow committing real force now that the joint force had reached the sacred ground. Axel fought through two of their fighters with the cold efficiency he had always had and kept his orientation on the bigger picture, watching the formation, watching the gaps, watching Reyna at his left shoulder moving through contact after contact with the focused precision of someone who had done this before in harder circumstances.
Then the ground changed.
He felt it underfoot first the soil within twenty meters of the hollow ground taking on a different quality. Not soft exactly. Charged. The boundary stones’ field interacting with the activated artifacts, the two ritual structures meeting and producing something that wasn’t quite either of them. It moved up through his boots and into his legs and his wolf registered it with the particular alarm response of an animal that has stepped into something it doesn’t have a category for.
The joint force felt it simultaneously. He saw it move through them the wolves’ stride pattern changing, the clan fighters’ composure adjusting. The charged ground was affecting everyone, but it was affecting his wolves more. The artifacts were tuned to vampire power. Everything built into the hollow ground was designed to work with vampire blood and vampire biology, which meant the ground was actively resistant to wolves in a way it wasn’t to the clan fighters.
Three of his warriors stumbled. Two went down and didn’t immediately get up not injured, but compromised, the charged soil pulling at something in their wolf nature that the training hadn’t prepared them for.
"Wolves back ten meters," he said into the radio. It cost him pulling his people out of their positions created gaps the Hollow could exploit. But leaving them on charged ground that was actively working against them cost more. "Clan fighters hold the inner line. Wolves cover the outer perimeter."
The reconfiguration took ninety seconds that nobody had to spare.
In those ninety seconds the Hollow pushed hard at the eastern edge of the formation and broke through.
Four of them reached the hollow ground’s inner circle. They moved to the artifacts with the efficiency of people executing a plan they had rehearsed many times, and two of them began something at the northern artifact that Axel recognized from Malka’s descriptions as the activation sequence.
The hollow ground began to glow.
Not dramatically. Not the theatrical illumination of something designed to impress. A deep, low luminescence that came from the soil itself, from the channels cut between the artifacts, a cold blue grey light that made everything within the circle look like it existed slightly outside of normal time.
The ritual was activating.
Reyna felt it the moment it started. He saw it hit her the physical response to a ritual designed specifically around her blood, her power, her particular concentration of the Voss bloodline. She went rigid for one second, her hand going to her sternum in the gesture he had seen weeks ago in the east wing room.
Then blood.
Her nose, sudden and bright, the Blood Apex power responding to the ritual’s call in the specific way that a tuning fork responded to its frequency. She pressed the back of her hand against it and looked at the hollow ground with an expression that was beyond fear and beyond anger.
It was recognition.
This had always been coming for her.
Axel moved toward her.
One of the Hollow’s fighters came out of the dark between them and he took it apart in four seconds and kept moving. He reached her and put his hand on her arm and she gripped it with the controlled strength of someone keeping themselves in one piece through sheer will.
"I can feel it," she said. Low and tight. "The activation. It’s pulling."
"Don’t go toward it."
"I’m not. But it’s..." She stopped. Breathed. "It knows what I am."
He kept his hand on her arm and looked at the hollow ground and thought about the boundary stones and the pre bond and what Malka’s records had said. The ritual was active but incomplete. Incomplete because it didn’t have what it needed. Incomplete because Reyna was still standing at his side instead of in the center of that circle.
Blood had been spilled on sacred ground.
The activation had begun.
They had minutes before incomplete became something else.
