Chapter 320: Chapter 123: [Death Codex]! Lynch Has an Inheritance

...

However, the passage within was pitch-black. Only the first few steps at the entrance were illuminated by the sliver of daylight filtering in from outside, making the depths beyond seem all the more profound and inscrutable.

Lynch took a deep breath, forcefully suppressing the urge to charge right in.

The prospect of obtaining the treasure left behind by his fellow transmigrator certainly made him ecstatic, but caution always came first.

He had, in fact, considered the possibility that his fellow, Lester, was trying to lure someone here for a possession. But on second thought, that seemed unlikely.

After all, if Lester wanted to possess someone, he could have just found a talented native. There was no need to go to such great lengths to find a Transmigrator and set the requirements for inheritance so high.

Besides, by any logical deduction, Lester couldn’t have been certain that another Transmigrator would even appear after him.

Furthermore, even if a Transmigrator did show up, they wouldn’t necessarily become a Necromancer. And even if they became a Necromancer, there was no guarantee they would receive the message he left behind and manage to find their way here.

It would be like betting on an incredibly slim, almost infinitesimal, chance.

’It’s just not necessary. Really, not at all.’

But even so, Lynch remained extra vigilant.

With a flicker of his will, dozens of skeletons of all shapes and sizes crawled out from the ranks of the undead with a RUSTLE.

These Skeletons were all small: palm-sized Squirrel Skeletons, foot-long lizard Skeletons, and a few bird Skeletons with scraps of membranous wings still clinging to their frames.

These were the scouts he had casually "recruited" along his journey, and now they were about to come in handy.

Under Lynch’s command, these small Skeletons entered the dark passage and quickly scattered.

After an initial sweep confirmed there was no immediate danger, Lynch lit several torches. He then summoned Bone Valor and had it lead its cannon-fodder Skeletons into the passage, torches in hand, to expand the search perimeter.

To aid the reconnaissance, he also sent a few Black Corpses to join the team.

He, in turn, closed his eyes, concentrating his mind to perceive everything the scouting party "saw" through their dispersed mental links.

The passage descended for about thirty meters before suddenly opening into a square stone chamber.

The stone chamber wasn’t large, only about a hundred square meters, and its walls were completely bare—not a single mural or decoration. In the center stood a single stone coffin, as white as jade.

The stone coffin was simple and unadorned, its surface completely plain.

The scouting party meticulously checked every corner of the chamber, tapping the walls and floor with their weapons. Lynch even had his heaviest Black Corpses stomp hard on every single floor tile, one by one.

The result? Nothing but hollow echoes and rising dust. No traps were triggered, no hidden doors revealed, and not a single ripple of Magic was detected.

Lynch’s tension eased slightly. He immediately commanded Bone Valor to step forward and push open the heavy lid of the stone coffin.

There was no corpse or any burial goods inside—only a rectangular box, pitch-black and made of a material that was neither metal nor wood, resting silently at the bottom.

On the front of the box was Lester’s signature Ashen Emblem.

Lynch stared at the box for a while through his mental link, then had Bone Valor and its squad search the area once more. Only after confirming there was nothing else of note in the stone chamber did he focus his attention back on the stone coffin and the box.

’It seems this stone coffin and this box are all that my fellow, Lester, left for me.’

Still, Lynch did not enter himself.

He directly ordered a Purple Zombie of immense strength to enter the passage, hoist out the entire stone coffin—black box and all—and place it in an open area dozens of meters away from him.

The stone coffin was heavy, and it landed with a dull THUD that made the turf tremble.

The coffin’s lid was pushed open again, revealing the black box within.

As for Lynch himself, long before the coffin was even carried out, he had already retreated behind a small knoll even farther away. He was surrounded by layers of protection from his Corpse Demon, Ghost Yi, the young Vampire Esther, and a large number of elite Undead, with only the top half of his head peeking out to observe.

"Open it."

Lynch issued the command via mental link to a Black Corpse standing beside the stone coffin.

The Black Corpse immediately reached out with a thick arm, picked up the black box, grabbed its edge with the other hand, and yanked it open. The lid came off with a pop, but there was still no fluctuation of Magic.

Through their shared vision, Lynch "saw" that the inside of the box was lined with soft, black velvet, upon which rested two items.

One was a hefty Magic Scripture with a cover so deep a black it seemed to swallow the surrounding light. The other was a letter resting on top of it.

The mark on the wax seal was the same: the emblem of the Ashbringer.

Even then, Lynch didn’t approach to inspect the two items himself. He ordered the Black Corpse to close the box and place it back inside the stone coffin.

Then, he directed his Undead Corps to restore the stone entrance to its original state. They backfilled the excavated earth and rock, doing their best to erase all traces of their work.

Angelo Crater’s climate was humid and rainy, with rapid plant growth. In just a few days, moss and shrubs would reclaim the area, completely concealing any signs of digging.

Only after all this was done did Lynch order two Purple Zombies to lift the stone coffin. Then, surrounded by his Undead Army, he began the journey back to Lakefront Town.

Along the way, he took the opportunity to deal with some leftover matters from the battle in Angelo.

He had some zombies drag the Goblin Airship to a hidden mountain hollow, where they gave it a simple camouflage of branches and vines, leaving it there to be dealt with later.
