Chapter 289: Chapter 118: Dragon Descendant Warlock! Lynch Had a Child Out of Wedlock?
"Let me see!"
Fritz didn’t know where he found the courage. Perhaps it was gratitude for the care, however small, that Golden Fang had shown him these past days. Or perhaps it was the bond forged over half a roasted chicken and some ale. He rushed forward, pushing through the panicked Kobolds and crouching beside the mother in labor.
He forced himself to calm down and began racking his brain, trying to recall every bit of knowledge he had ever learned or overheard.
’I think I vaguely remember hearing something at court... about certain noblewomen who had difficult births...’
’That’s it!’
A bold and dangerous idea surfaced in his mind.
"Golden Fang! The dagger! Give me your dagger!" Fritz yelled urgently at the frantic Kobold. "Quick, go find a Priest! As fast as you can! There might still be a chance to save your mate!"
At these words, a glimmer of hope suddenly lit up Golden Fang’s eyes.
Fritz had already proven his wisdom with his counsel on several occasions, so Golden Fang had considerable faith in his words.
With barely a moment’s hesitation, it turned and scrambled out of the mine. It tore toward the guard post on the outskirts of the mining area, running faster than it ever had in its life.
Meanwhile, Fritz took the dagger from another Kobold, who handed it over with trembling hands.
He took a deep breath and began ordering the few Kobolds who had kept their composure. "Boil water, as much as you can! Get clean cloths and prepare bandages! Quickly!"
The mine was instantly thrown into a frenzy of activity.
Fritz held the dagger over the campfire to sterilize it.
He looked at the barely breathing mother and the oversized infant’s head, which was stuck halfway out. His palms were slick with sweat.
’A caesarean section.’
’I’ve only read about it in some old medical texts. I’ve never seen one, let alone performed one myself.’
’But right now, I have no other choice.’
’It’s a desperate measure, but it’s the only one I have.’
He gritted his teeth. With a trembling hand, he measured out the location and carefully made the incision...
「Meanwhile.」
Night had fallen over the area outside the mine.
Golden Fang was running for its life, putting every ounce of strength it had into its mad dash. Its small body erupted with astonishing speed as it scrambled along the rugged mining tunnels.
In the distance, it spotted a squad of Ninth Battle Battalion Soldiers patrolling along Mirror Lake. The light from their torches danced in the darkness, making them easy to see.
Leading them was Conrad, a military Priest clad in white robes. He was Lynch’s senior from Hurst Academy.
After graduating, he had followed Catherine into the Tiger Battalion before being stationed in Lakefront Town. He had served dutifully under Lynch ever since.
"Priest! Lord Priest! Help! Help me!!" Golden Fang scrambled and fell before Conrad, shrieking incoherently in a mix of the Kobold language and the Common Tongue. "Birth! Giving birth! Dragon Descendant! Stuck! It’s dying! Fritz... cut... Quick! Quick!"
Conrad was startled by the sudden appearance of the Kobold, but he quickly pieced together the situation from its fragmented words.
’A Kobold Dragon Descendant is being born? And it’s a difficult birth?’
His expression turned grim. He immediately ordered the Soldiers behind him, "Two of you, inform Lord Lynch as quickly as possible. The rest of you, with me to the mine."
Golden Fang occasionally came to town to purchase large quantities of food and daily supplies. Conrad had crossed paths with it a few times, so he knew it was the leader of the Kobold miners.
He also knew that his junior, Lynch, placed great importance on this group of hardworking and highly efficient Kobold miners.
Not daring to delay, Conrad led the Soldiers behind him and followed the scrambling Golden Fang, rushing back into the depths of the mine at top speed.
When they arrived at the crowded birthing chamber, the scene that greeted them made even Conrad gasp.
Fritz was there, his hands trembling violently as he reached into the mother’s open abdomen. He was pulling out a wet, red "lump of flesh" that was much larger than a normal Kobold infant.
Fritz’s hands were covered in blood, and his face and clothes were spattered with it as well.
The mother was bleeding uncontrollably from the wound, her breathing so faint it was barely perceptible.
The scene was gory and chaotic.
But Conrad was a professionally trained Priest. He had seen all manner of injuries and was mentally resilient.
He immediately stepped forward, taking over for the nearly collapsed Fritz.
"Good work. Press here!" Conrad quickly assessed the mother’s condition. While directing Fritz and the other Kobolds to apply pressure to stop the bleeding, he began to chant a sacred prayer in a low voice.
A soft Holy Light bloomed from his hands, enveloping the mother’s mangled wound.
The mother’s life, like a flickering candle in the wind, was stabilized, her fading breath sustained for the moment.
Wasting no time, Conrad took out his medical kit. He began to staunch the mother’s bleeding and clean the wound, then carefully sutured the abdominal incision with catgut. All the while, he continuously cast Low Tier healing spells to stabilize her vital signs...
After a series of tense but orderly procedures, Golden Fang’s mate’s faint breathing was miraculously sustained. Though still unconscious, her vital signs gradually stabilized.
By now, the Dragon Descendant infant had already been taken by an older female Kobold, who was carefully wiping it clean with warm water and a soft cloth.
After letting out a few loud, healthy cries, it gradually quieted down. It began to curiously wriggle its body, which was covered in fine red scales, looking quite healthy and strong.
Only then did everyone let out a collective sigh of relief.
Golden Fang looked at its mate, who was unconscious but no longer in mortal danger, and then at the healthy Dragon Descendant infant. Overcome with emotion, tears streamed down its face.
