Chapter 286 - 118: Dragon Descendant Warlock! Lynch Had a Child Out of Wedlock?
Chapter 286: Chapter 118: Dragon Descendant Warlock! Lynch Had a Child Out of Wedlock?
The look she gave Lynch instantly grew several times colder, as if ice were forming in her eyes.
She stood up.
"I’m tired. I’m going to get some rest." Her voice was ice-cold, as if she feared that if she listened any longer, she might lose control and do something irrational.
Without waiting for Lynch to reply, she turned and left the backyard, her steps hurried.
"Huh?" Lynch watched her leave, muttering in confusion. "Sea Song is acting a little strange today... Could it be her time of the month?"
He stroked his chin, lost in thought. ’I wonder if mermaids even get periods...?’
"Lord Lynch, you still haven’t answered my question!" Eleanor’s voice pulled him from his thoughts.
The young woman had already finished her skewer and was back to pouting, though the grease at the corners of her mouth somewhat undercut her fierce expression. "I don’t want to be on logistics duty anymore! I want to go to the front lines and fight alongside the Warriors! I’m a member of the North Wind Legion’s Ninth Battalion, too!"
The front lines?
Lynch scoffed internally. ’Are you kidding me?’
’This precious young lady’s grandfather is the chief advisor to the North Wind Legion, a Tier Seven Peak Mage.’
’If you really went to the front lines and got so much as a scratch, let alone if something truly terrible happened... would your overprotective grandfather ever let me off the hook?’
’He’d probably freeze all of Lakefront Town solid as an offering.’
A warm smile immediately spread across Lynch’s face. "Eleanor, my dear, that’s the wrong way to look at it. As the saying goes, ’An army marches on its stomach.’ What is war really about? It’s about logistics! Throughout history, how many famous generals started out by managing supplies and provisions? I’ve placed you in logistics, such a crucial and central position, because I see your potential. I’m training you to one day command the entire battlefield!"
He spoke with the gravity of someone imparting a profound truth. "If logistics fails, it doesn’t matter how capable the front-line troops are; they’ll be like a tree without roots. But when logistics run smoothly, the soldiers on the front can focus on fighting without a single worry. There’s a deep science to it! Coordination, deployment, foresight, crisis management... isn’t every single one of those an ultimate test of one’s overall abilities?"
"You might see it as trivial work now, but once you truly grasp its intricacies, you’ll realize that logistics is the best place to truly temper a person and reveal their potential!"
Eleanor was a little stunned by this barrage of lofty theories. She blinked her ice-blue eyes and stared blankly at Lynch.
’Come to think of it...’
’...he might actually have a point.’
’There were similar case studies in my military history classes at the academy... Weren’t many of the most famous commanders also known for their outstanding logistical skills?’
’Have I been too focused on the thrill of battle?’
Seeing the anger in her eyes give way to contemplation, Lynch decided to strike while the iron was hot. He patted her on the shoulder and said encouragingly, "Keep up the good work. I believe in your potential. For now, just focus on gaining experience in logistics. Once you’ve mastered everything here and feel completely at ease, then when you go to the front lines, it’ll be a complete curb-stomp. Whether you’re leading a squad or commanding a unit, you’ll achieve twice the results with half the effort."
Eleanor was completely taken in, but as she mulled over Lynch’s words, her battle-lust seemed to find a new direction.
’That’s right!’
’Grandfather always said that a true powerhouse can’t just be good at charging headfirst into the fray.’
’Maybe... Lord Lynch really is trying to cultivate my talents?’
The dissatisfaction on her face vanished, replaced by the zealous fire of someone about to be entrusted with a great responsibility. She nodded emphatically. "I understand, Lord Lynch! Thank you for your guidance! I’ll do my best with the logistics work!"
With that, she seemed to be bursting with renewed vigor. Forgetting all about the skewers, she turned and dashed off, likely to resume her battle with the ledgers and supply lists.
Lynch watched her disappear into the distance before finally letting out a sigh of relief and wiping the cold sweat from his brow.
"Whew, sweet-talking kids is exhausting work..." he muttered to himself. He finished off the last few skewers on the grill and let out a contented burp.
Full and satisfied, a wave of drowsiness washed over him.
But instead of heading back to his room to rest, he stretched, loosened his joints, and headed straight for the garrison’s underground storage area.
The celebration was for everyone else; he still had work to do.
The quality of the corpses harvested from this Gnoll extermination was simply too high.
The weakest among them were Tier One Gnoll Warriors, and there was no shortage of Tier Two elites, Tier Three and Tier Four Centurions. There was even the body of a Tier Four Peak Shaman and the remains of a demonized Chieftain.
The Tier One corpses would be fine for replenishing his high-quality Skeleton Corps, but converting the Tier Two and Tier Three bodies into mere Skeletons would be a terrible waste.
Converting them into a Zombie Corps would best preserve their physical strength and some of their abilities from when they were alive, offering the most bang for the buck.
The only problem was that converting corpses into zombies was not only time-consuming and laborious, but also expensive. All the various Yin Materials and Negative Energy Crystals cost a fortune in Gold Coins.
Fortunately, he now had the Sleeping Tomb, an Undead structure that could handle part of the conversion process for him.
As long as he placed properly preserved corpses into the tomb’s coffins, the dense Negative Energy within would slowly seep into the bodies, gradually transforming them into Black Corpses.
Although this process was slow, it would save a significant amount of the materials and energy required for direct spellcasting.
This did mean, however, that he was going to be quite busy for the foreseeable future.
