Chapter 234: Chapter 110: Pale Elegy: What a Lively Scene
Projecting his voice with his aura, he made sure he was heard across the entire battlefield.
But it was clear that Angus held little sway among the Blue Scarves—practically no one was listening to him.
"Hubert, fall in with my unit. Form a Defensive Array thirty meters ahead of me."
This time, Angus gave a direct order.
Hubert was a Tier Three Middle Stage Warrior. His Blue Scarf battalion had originally numbered just over three hundred men, but they had already lost several dozen in the chaos.
When Angus—his clear superior in strength—called him by name, Hubert didn’t have time for second thoughts. He instinctively ordered his men to fall in with the Angus Department. Following the command, he rallied his remaining soldiers and formed a defensive circle at the designated spot, aiming their crossbows and longspears at the Flame Demon and Hellhound rampaging nearby.
With one unit taking the lead and obeying Angus’s command, the effect was immediate.
Several other scattered units nearby had lost their commanders and fallen into disarray.
Seeing an effective defense being organized, and driven by their survival instincts, they too began to converge on Angus’s position, instinctively obeying his string of clear, direct commands: "Shield bearers, to the front! Guard the flanks!"
"Crossbowmen, concentrate your fire! Aim for the Flame Demon’s joints!"
"Mages, don’t cast your Magic wildly! Wait for my command to fire as one!"
Angus himself was an impressive commander. His orders were sound, and by taking charge in the midst of the crisis, he quickly helped the routed army stabilize their ranks.
Before anyone knew it, he had brazenly taken command of the entire battlefield.
Of course, not everyone was convinced.
The leader of one battalion, which was farther from the Flame Demon and had suffered fewer casualties, was a defiant Berserker approaching Tier Four in strength.
When he saw Angus "giving orders," he sneered. Instead of falling in, he loudly berated his men, forbidding them from joining the main group. He intended to rally his own troops and break out in a different direction.
However, just as he was swinging his War Axe and shouting, his spittle flying, his legs suddenly gave out. An intense wave of weakness washed over him, making him stagger and nearly fall to the ground.
"Huh? Who...?" Shock and fury surged through him, and he opened his mouth to curse—
WHOOSH—!!
At that exact moment, a piercing whistle cut through the air.
A pale bone arrow streaked in from the distance, swift as lightning. With unerring precision, it shot into his open mouth, pierced through his head, and burst out the back of his skull, taking a spray of brain matter with it.
Such sneak attacks on the battlefield were the most difficult to guard against.
The defiant Berserker froze, his eyes bulging. Without so much as a grunt, he collapsed to the ground.
"Leader—"
"Boss!"
Chaos erupted among his men.
Not far away, in the shadow of a half-collapsed earthen wall, a "Soldier" wearing a Blue Scarf and a body-concealing cloak over his leather armor slowly lowered a bone bow.
As the cloak shifted, it revealed an arm of pale, fleshless bone.
Indeed, this was the Tier Three Skeleton Bow and Arrow Guard that Lynch had secretly deployed long ago, now lying in wait: Bone-Yuji.
Angus seized the opportunity and shouted to the chaotic squad, "Don’t panic! You all answer to Thomas! Thomas, bring your men over here and form the left flank! Move it!"
The deputy commander, Thomas, had been panicking over his leader’s sudden death. But when he heard Angus call his name and saw that the other units were already following Angus’s lead, how could he dare hesitate?
Roaring, he immediately began to rally his men. He followed Angus’s instructions, moving to the designated position and arranging his troops into formation.
Under the pressure of a life-or-death situation, Angus swiftly integrated the scattered troops across the battlefield.
Under his command, the army executed a fighting retreat, constantly maintaining their distance from the maddened Flame Demon and Hellhound.
Shield bearers formed layered defenses to block and wear down the beasts, while the crossbowmen and Mages concentrated their fire, unleashing volley after volley upon the two monsters.
At Angus’s command, even two light catapults that had been dragged nearby adjusted their aim and began hurling stones at the Flame Demon.
The Tier Seven Elite Flame Demon and the Tier Five Three-headed Hellhound were both incredibly powerful and ferocious. However, without their master to command them, they were subjected to the relentless, focused fire of an organized and tactical ranged force. They began to sustain injuries and gradually falter.
The weaker Three-headed Hellhound was the first to fall under the concentrated assault.
Although the remaining Flame Demon was stronger, it had already killed over three hundred men. Its fiery body began to flicker erratically, and its movements grew noticeably sluggish.
Finally, at the cost of another hundred casualties, the terrifying Elite Flame Demon let out one last pained roar under the bombardment of countless arrows and Magic. Its massive body disintegrated into a shower of sparks and molten lava, vanishing completely.
"We won! We killed it!"
"We survived!"
Seeing this, the Blue Scarves who had survived the ordeal erupted in cheers.
Many collapsed right where they stood, gasping for breath. Their faces were a mixture of exhaustion and the lingering fear that comes after cheating death.
The relentless, high-intensity combat and the constant threat of death had left them utterly spent.
However, before they could finish celebrating their victory over the Flame Demon and the Three-headed Hellhound...
WHOOSH! WHOOSH! WHOOSH!
BOOM! BOOM!
From the direction of the city walls, on Raymond’s command, the long-waiting defenders of Red Ridge Castle unleashed a furious ranged assault.
