Chapter 290 - 108: The Anti-cancer Drug is a Success, The Drug Trial (3)
"Of course, President Jiang."
They had actually already run experiments at the research institute; otherwise, they wouldn’t have dared to call and report their success.
But since this was Jiang Li’s request, he would simply comply.
The four of them got up, left the private room, and went downstairs.
Xu Lian was taking a government car, so Jiang Li didn’t feel right asking him for a ride.
Fortunately, she had driven over, so she had Sheng Mingyue drive. The two cars headed to the First Hospital, one behind the other.
They had just arrived when the people from the research institute showed up right after them.
Two people came, carrying a small, silver-white briefcase.
Upon seeing Jiang Li, they immediately strode over. "President Jiang."
Jiang Li nodded. "Let’s go. We’ll head in together."
After all, she wasn’t an expert on the anti-cancer drug herself. With these professionals present, she wouldn’t have to worry about any questions from Xu Lian.
The hospital had signs everywhere, so the group went straight to the inpatient department.
When they reached the nurses’ station, Xu Lian tapped on the counter and asked in a gentle tone, "Hello, could you please tell me which room the most critical cancer patient is in? And which bed number?"
The nurse was busy tallying something. Before looking up, she heard the question and was about to retort, but when she raised her head and saw the person standing before her, she asked in shock, "The... the Mayor?"
Xu Lian nodded. "This is an unofficial visit. No need to make a fuss."
The nurse swallowed hard. ’Goodness,’ she thought, ’I never imagined I’d see a real, live mayor in my lifetime.’
Xu Lian tapped the counter again. "But for now, could you answer my question?"
The nurse quickly replied, "Bed 3 in Room 18. He’s only 28, already in the terminal stage of lung cancer."
Jiang Li took a sharp breath upon hearing this. ’Terminal lung cancer at 28... He must be a heavy smoker.’
’Thank goodness Shen Yanzhi doesn’t smoke much.’
Xu Lian nodded and said, "Alright, thank you for your trouble," before turning to walk toward Room 18.
When they got to the hospital room, Jiang Li didn’t have the two researchers or Sheng Mingyue go in. It was just her, Xu Lian, and Zhao Xia.
The room was a three-person ward. Besides the patients, there were also several family members, all chattering away.
But compared to the other two beds, Bed 3 seemed much more desolate.
He was all alone.
Lying silently in his bed, though he was only 28, he looked more like a man in his forties.
His hair was graying, his face was covered in stubble, and he had a world-weary look.
Seeing the three people walk up and stop at his bedside, the man asked suspiciously, "Who are you looking for?"
Xu Lian replied, "We’re here to see you."
The man’s face was full of disbelief. "I don’t think I know you."
Xu Lian glanced at the man’s hands and saw he wasn’t on an IV drip. "Excuse me, would you mind sparing a few minutes to talk with us outside?"
The man said warily, "I don’t know you. Why should I talk to you?"
This time, before Xu Lian could speak, Jiang Li, who was standing behind him, spoke up first. "Because we can bring you back from the brink of death."
"If you want to live, come with us." Without waiting for the man’s reaction, she turned and walked out of the room.
Xu Lian was taken aback for a moment, but things had already gotten to this point, so he couldn’t very well undermine her.
Besides, if the man wasn’t willing, they could always find someone else.
The man bit his lip, thinking for a few seconds, before finally swinging his legs over the side of the bed and getting up.
He was only 28. His life was barely half over; how could he be willing to die?
If he were truly ready to die, he wouldn’t have come to the hospital in the first place.
Based on what Jiang Li had just said about "bringing him back from the brink of death," he was curious to see just how they planned to do it.
He followed them to the stairwell. Jiang Li stopped, turned around, and fixed her gaze on the man. "We have an anti-cancer drug. Are you willing to try it?"
A sneer appeared on the man’s face. "Are you kidding me?"
If there really was an anti-cancer drug, the hospital would have been using it long ago.
Jiang Li’s expression was serious. "I’m not kidding. It was just developed today. Although the research institute has confirmed that it’s safe, we want to test it on a patient to be absolutely certain."
"We just asked at the nurses’ station. You’re the most critical patient in this ward, so we want you to be the one to try it."
Before the man could refuse, Jiang Li spoke again. "Of course, you wouldn’t be doing it for free. If you agree, I will personally give you one million yuan."
"Regardless of the outcome, the one million is guaranteed."
