Chapter 202: The Verdant Warden
The first seed case took less than five minutes to recover. Luke and Lauren followed the corridor marked one into a narrow storage chamber lined with collapsed stone shelves, where most of the containers had rotted away years earlier.
A sealed metal case stamped with the number one remained wedged beneath a layer of pale moss. Luke lifted it with both hands and carried it back to the central chamber.
The second corridor descended farther underground, where water covered the floor to his ankles and thin roots curled through cracks in the walls and ceiling. They found the next case trapped beneath a fallen shelving frame and recovered it without difficulty.
By the time Luke placed it beside the first, the scraping sound from the third passage had stopped. The sudden silence bothered him more than the noise had.
Lauren adjusted the blindfold and faced the remaining corridor. Luke lifted the spear, and they entered together.
The old Verdant root system thickened around them as they moved deeper. Some roots were no wider than thread, while others pressed through the masonry in bands thicker than Luke’s arm. Pale green light traveled beneath the bark in steady pulses.
Several yards farther in, the pattern changed. Copper-colored cords wrapped around the living roots, and Luke stopped before getting close enough to touch them.
The foreign growth did not resemble the black corruption they had encountered around Lethariel. These strands were smooth and almost metallic, somewhere between a root and a vine, while small amber bulbs swelled at regular intervals where the cords tightened around the older Verdant system.
Lauren crouched beside one. "Leave it alone for a second."
Ancient Root Recognition spread through the surrounding roots. The healthy network brightened pale green, but the copper growth remained outside Lauren’s recognition until the ability pushed deeper.
A notification appeared.
[Foreign graft structure detected.]
[Function: Parasitic nutrient transfer.]
Lauren frowned. "It’s stealing from the old root network."
Luke looked at the nearest amber bulb. A faint glow moved from the Verdant root into the copper cord before traveling deeper into the corridor.
"Where is it taking everything?"
"Deeper inside."
Another scraping sound answered from beyond the bend, followed by a low wooden groan. Luke and Lauren exchanged a glance before continuing.
The corridor widened into an enormous underground greenhouse. A broken glass dome had once covered the chamber, though only fragments remained in the stone frame overhead. Beds of luminous ferns and pale-leafed shrubs formed concentric rings around the room, while small trees grew from raised circles of dark soil.
The third seed case rested near the far wall, with something large standing between them and it.
The creature resembled a stag shaped from living wood. It stood almost as tall as a horse, with bark plates layered across its body and green leaves growing along its spine. Its antlers spread above its head like the branches of a young tree.
Copper graft cords covered much of its body. Several had wrapped around its rear leg and chest, while others disappeared beneath the bark around the shoulders, then emerged farther up before joining a thick collar of amber growth around its neck.
The same parasitic glow Luke had seen in the corridor traveled along those cords.
A system label appeared.
[Verdant Warden]
[Status: Distressed]
Luke lowered the spear point slightly.
Lauren studied the message. "It’s suffering. That doesn’t mean it knows we’re here to help."
One wooden hoof struck the floor, and the creature charged.
Luke moved off the centerline before its antlers reached him, keeping the spear close rather than committing to a thrust. Mercer had spent too many hours correcting that particular mistake for Luke to throw away his reach on the first attack.
He let the Warden commit to the charge, then turned with it as the antlers swept past his shoulder. Luke used the middle of the shaft against the creature’s side, not to injure it but to create distance.
The impact nearly tore the weapon from his hands. Bark plates covered the Warden’s ribs like armor, and Luke had to reset his footing while the creature skidded across the stone and turned.
Truth Behind Motion sharpened the shift in its body. The rear right leg carried less weight than the others, causing its chest to dip slightly left every time it prepared to accelerate.
Lauren raised one hand. "Keep it busy. I need a few seconds."
Ancient Root Recognition spread through the Warden. The creature’s natural pathways illuminated beneath the bark, with pale green flow traveling through the legs and chest toward a living core inside its body.
The copper grafts interrupted that movement.
Three thick feeding tethers extended from the Warden into the chamber itself. One connected from its rear leg to a planting bed, another ran from beneath its shoulder into the wall, and the thickest stretched from the collar around its neck toward the ceiling roots.
Lauren followed all three connections. "The graft network is anchored to the chamber. If I can mark the safe places to cut, we can separate it from the Warden."
The creature lowered its antlers again.
Luke fixed his attention on the nearest tether.
The Warden charged, and he moved right before letting the creature correct toward him. Truth Behind Motion showed the commitment in its movement, while the compromised rear leg slowed the turn just enough for Luke to let it pass cleanly.
The first tether stretched tight behind the animal. A copper cord ran from the Warden’s rear leg into the nearest planting bed, disappearing beneath a cluster of amber bulbs.
Luke swung the spear rather than thrusting.
The blade struck the taut cord and bounced away.
The material was far tougher than an ordinary vine.
"Unveiled Weakness."
Violet light appeared across the graft network. It did not mark the Warden itself. Instead, three narrow rings formed along the tethers, exactly where the copper growth changed from flexible cord into hardened feeding collars.
[Unveiled Weakness activated.]
[Safe severance points exposed.]
"The rear tether will tighten when it comes around the planter," Lauren said.
Luke was already moving. He used the nearest planting bed as an obstacle instead of trying to meet the Warden head-on, forcing it to turn around the stone ring.
The injured rear leg slowed the movement. As the animal changed direction, the tether behind it pulled tight and the violet severance mark became visible.
Luke waited for the angle, then struck.
The spearhead cut through the marked section. Amber fluid sprayed across the floor, and the disconnected tether recoiled toward the planting bed like a severed rope.
The Warden screamed, making Luke retreat immediately. For one alarming second, he thought the attack had hurt the creature instead of the graft.
Then the pale green flow inside its rear leg brightened. Several smaller copper cords loosened around the limb and dropped away.
"The flow is returning," Lauren said.
The Warden kicked backward hard enough to crack a stone planter. Luke avoided the full blow, but one wooden hoof clipped his thigh and sent pain through the game body.
He stumbled, recovered his footing, and brought the spear back between them.
"The shoulder is next," Lauren said.
The second tether ran beneath the Warden’s front shoulder and into the wall, making it much harder to reach. The creature kept its body between Luke and the marked severance point, while the copper cord remained slack whenever the Warden faced the wall.
Luke began circling, and the Warden tracked him.
Mercer’s drills had taught him what happened when he forced an attack from a bad angle. Instead of chasing the tether, Luke backed toward the center of the chamber and deliberately gave the Warden a clean line toward him.
Lauren recognized what he wanted. "You need it to pass you."
"The tether has to stretch."
The Warden lowered its antlers.
Truth Behind Motion showed the rear leg compressing, the chest shifting left, and the shoulders preparing to drive forward. Luke stayed where he was until the creature committed, then stepped diagonally away at the last moment.
The Warden rushed past him.
Its shoulder tether snapped taut.
Luke turned with the creature and brought the spear down across the violet severance mark.
The cord split, scattering more amber fluid across the floor. The Warden staggered while pale light immediately spread through its shoulder and chest, loosening the graft strands around that section.
[Parasitic graft network destabilized.]
Luke backed away before the creature could lash out again.
Only the thickest tether remained. It extended from the collar around the Warden’s neck into the ceiling and stayed taut even when the creature stood still, with small amber bulbs pulsing along its length.
Lauren studied the green pathway running beneath the collar. "You can’t cut this one at the neck. The natural root is directly underneath it."
Luke lowered the spear point. A clean thrust through the graft could easily continue into the Warden’s throat.
The creature shook violently as copper strands tightened around its neck and the amber bulbs overhead brightened. Its front legs buckled before it forced itself upright again.
"The graft is pulling harder."
The feeding tether contracted and dragged the Warden half a step backward.
Luke followed the cord upward until it disappeared into a thick cluster of roots crossing the remains of the glass dome.
"We cut the other end."
Lauren followed his gaze. "If the upper anchor is separate from the Verdant root, yes."
She activated Ancient Root Recognition. Green pathways spread through the ceiling roots, while the copper tether remained distinct from them, wrapped around the old system rather than merging with it.
Unveiled Weakness revealed another violet mark high above the Warden. The tether had formed a narrow anchoring loop around one of the ancient support roots.
"There," Lauren said. "The collar around the upper root."
Luke measured the distance. A broken section of stone railing leaned against one of the planters, and beyond it, a thick root crossed low enough to reach from the top of the raised bed.
He started toward it.
Lauren studied the route. "The railing is loose."
"It only has to hold me for one step."
The Warden turned toward him.
Luke climbed onto the planter, gaining another three feet. He stepped onto the broken railing, and the stone shifted beneath his weight.
Lauren raised one hand toward the upper tether. "A little farther right once you’re up."
Luke adjusted his footing just as the Warden charged.
He jumped.
His left hand caught the low root, and for one breathless second he swung above the planting bed with the spear in his right hand while the Verdant Warden rushed beneath him.
The old root held. Luke pulled himself high enough to hook one leg over it.
"Where?"
"Two feet right."
Luke shifted along the root. Below him, the Warden turned, and the movement pulled the copper tether tighter.
He reversed the spear and wedged the blade beneath the marked loop rather than striking blindly. When the collar resisted, Luke slid his grip farther down the weapon and used the length of the shaft for leverage.
Mercer had spent weeks teaching him not to treat the spearhead as the only useful part of the weapon. This was not a technique Luke had practiced, but the principle carried over well enough.
He pulled until the copper collar split.
The final tether tore free from the ceiling, and its weight dropped toward the Warden. The instant the connection broke, every amber bulb along the cord collapsed and the graft collar around the creature’s neck loosened.
Copper strands slipped from beneath the bark and fell to the ground in dead coils.
The Warden staggered and folded onto its front legs. Luke dropped the spear first, then lowered himself carefully from the root instead of jumping all the way to the floor.
By the time his feet touched down, Lauren had begun checking the creature from several yards away.
Ancient Root Recognition spread across the Warden once more. Sections that had been dim beneath the grafts brightened one after another, spreading from the legs into the chest and finally toward the creature’s neck.
"It’s recovering."
Luke stayed beside her while the Warden slowly raised its head and forced itself upright. Its wooden eyes fixed on him, but he kept the spear lowered.
The creature approached one careful step at a time. Lauren’s fingers closed around Luke’s left arm when its antlers began to descend.
The branching tips stopped just above the floor.
"Is it bowing?" Luke asked.
"I think so."
Neither of them moved until the Warden raised its head again.
It turned away, and roots near the far wall began withdrawing from the third seed case. Once the metal container was clear, the Warden pushed it across the stone with one hoof before stepping aside.
Luke retrieved the case without approaching the creature any closer than necessary. The seal remained intact.
System windows appeared.
[Quest objective complete: Recover Seed Case 1.]
[Quest objective complete: Recover Seed Case 2.]
[Quest objective complete: Recover Seed Case 3.]
[Optional objective completed: Preserve the Verdant Warden.]
[Reward modified.]
More notifications followed.
[Truth Behind Motion proficiency increased.]
[Ancient Root Recognition proficiency increased.]
[Unveiled Weakness proficiency increased.]
The final reward appeared in front of Lauren.
[Item acquired: Ancestral Graft Seed.]
A small dark-brown seed materialized in her palm. Fine green veins covered its surface, while one side had a tiny natural groove resembling the outline of a branching tree.
Lauren stared at it as another set of messages appeared.
[Verdant Elven Bloodline detected.]
[Bloodline purity: 5%.]
[Compatible skill detected: Oracle’s Heartwood.]
Luke leaned closer.
[Ancestral Graft Seed may be integrated with Oracle’s Heartwood.]
[Current growth condition unmet.]
"So it can change Heartwood?" Luke asked.
"Eventually. Whatever it needs hasn’t happened yet."
A hair-thin green root emerged from one end of the seed and curled once around Lauren’s index finger before going still.
Luke watched her expression. "Does that hurt?"
"No."
Ancient Root Recognition stirred faintly without a full activation. Lauren turned her hand, studying the tiny root from another angle before slipping the seed carefully into her inventory.
When they were ready to leave, Lauren reached for Luke’s free hand. He took it while balancing the third seed case beneath his other arm.
The Verdant Warden had lowered itself beside one of the luminous planting beds. Pale green light moved steadily through the cracks in its bark, and the marks left by the copper grafts were already beginning to close.
New shoots had appeared in the soil around its legs.
Lauren watched it for another moment before they headed into the corridor. Behind them, the Warden released a low wooden call that followed them until the curve of the passage hid the greenhouse from view.
Lauren’s inventory now held a seed that Powerforge claimed could alter Oracle’s Heartwood, while all three recovered cases rested safely in their possession. More importantly, the chamber behind them still contained a living Warden instead of another corpse.
Luke adjusted the final case under his arm and followed Lauren toward the stairs.
