Chapter 201: The Old Conservatory

The first voice Luke heard after disconnecting belonged to Dr. Shaw. The capsule lid had barely begun lifting when the doctor spoke.

"Don't sit up yet."

The weight of Luke's real body returned piece by piece. His right hand immediately felt heavier than the one he had been using inside Powerforge, so he flexed the fingers once, confirmed that nothing had worsened, and left them alone.

Across the room, Lauren's capsule opened at nearly the same time. She waited for a nurse to remove the monitoring leads before sitting up, while Shaw approached with a tablet.

"Start with the system messages. Exact wording if you remember it."

Lauren answered first.

"Waystone response detected. Unregistered route signature. Route designation nine. Connection incomplete. Receiving point unavailable."

"And the vision?"

"Pale towers beneath a dark sky. Motionless lightning. The same tall figure we saw beyond the Route Nine passage, including the branching shadows around its head."

Luke added everything else while Shaw recorded it. He described the black ninth groove, the way it illuminated without affecting the other eight, and the survey clerk's route diagram showing only eight registered marks on the eastern waystone.

Shaw waited until Luke finished before looking up from the tablet.

"Any cold in the affected arm?"

"No."

"Pressure behind the wrist?"

"No."

"Spreading numbness, weakness, or anything resembling the response from Lethariel or Route Nine?"

"Nothing."

Shaw looked toward Lauren. "Any headache or neurological strain from Oracle's Glimpse?"

"No. The vision startled me, but the ability itself didn't hurt."

The doctor checked the monitoring records. "That's encouraging, but limited. Nothing in either set of readings suggests a significant neurological or pathway change during the period you described."

Luke sat up a little farther. "So the waystone didn't affect us?"

"We found no measurable reaction in your real bodies." Shaw lowered the tablet slightly. "That does not tell us what the waystone was doing inside Powerforge."

Luke nodded. That distinction was frustrating, but after everything surrounding Route Nine, he preferred a lack of reaction to another unexplained change in his wrist.

"The Bureau will review your report," Shaw continued. "Until someone explicitly clears it, the eastern waystone is off-limits. You will not search for another structure displaying the same route signature either."

"We weren't planning to touch it again," Lauren said.

Luke agreed. Curiosity had not faded, but neither had the memory of the faceless figure reaching toward the Route Nine passage before it closed.

"Does this stop our supervised dives?"

"Not automatically."

Luke had expected a different answer, but Shaw continued before he could react.

"You encountered something outside the expected parameters of a simple survey, documented it, marked the route unsafe, and withdrew without deliberately activating the structure. That was the correct decision."

Lauren's lips curved. Coming from Shaw, that was close enough to praise that Luke decided not to ruin it by commenting.

Two days passed without any delayed change in his wrist, the dormant residue, or Lauren's neurological readings. Once the additional scans came back stable, Shaw approved their third supervised dive and reviewed the restrictions before either of them entered the capsules.

"Ninety minutes again. The eastern waystone remains prohibited."

Luke nodded.

"Reinforce, Arcane Thrust, and Quickstep remain off-limits for you. Lifeblade remains emergency-only. Truth Behind Motion is permitted."

Luke let him continue.

Shaw turned toward Lauren.

"Brief Oracle's Glimpse uses are permitted if you stop at the first sign of strain. Unveiled Weakness and Ancient Root Recognition are cleared for ordinary use. No vision-sharing, and no deliberately pushing Oracle effects into anyone else."

Lauren nodded. "And Oracle's Heartwood?"

"No."

Her expression showed that she had expected the answer.

"We have not tested a full Rootbound transformation under medical supervision," Shaw continued. "If something goes wrong badly enough that you believe Oracle's Heartwood is necessary to survive, use it. Otherwise, it remains off-limits."

"Understood."

Shaw gave them both one last look. "Stay within the approved quest regions. If something behaves outside known parameters, report it rather than experimenting with it."

Luke accepted the instruction and climbed into his capsule.

When Powerforge returned around them, Luke and Lauren appeared in the same pale-stone courtyard as before. Luke checked his right hand once. Every finger responded immediately, his wrist felt perfectly normal, and Compensation remained active, so he closed the status display without testing anything else.

Lauren adjusted the enhanced blindfold and took his left hand. Together they headed for the quest board.

The city felt more familiar on their third supervised return. Luke recognized several streets without checking the map, remembered which market lane connected to the western gate, and no longer felt the need to stare at every armed player who passed them.

The quest board was busy. Players gathered around the newer notices while completed requests disappeared and replacements slid into the empty spaces.

Luke started reading from the top, but Lauren stopped him before he reached the second row.

"Wait."

Her attention had settled on an older notice near the lower edge of the board. Unlike the surrounding requests, it was written on thick greenish parchment, and a small emblem had been stamped beside the title, showing three roots curling around a seed.

Lauren traced the emblem with one fingertip.

"I've seen this pattern before."

"Lethariel?"

"Something close to it. The Heartroot structures used the same kind of branching design."

Luke read the request.

[Conservatory Recovery]

[An abandoned horticultural conservatory south of the city contains a sealed seed vault once maintained by the old terrace growers.]

[Recent root growth has damaged the lower foundation.]

[Recover three numbered seed cases before moisture ruins their contents.]

Nothing in the notice mentioned monsters or an unusual hazard. The familiar root emblem was enough to hold Lauren's attention.

"I want to see where that symbol leads."

"Then we're taking it."

[Quest accepted: Conservatory Recovery.]

A route appeared on their map, leading through the southern gate and across the terraced farmland beyond the city. Luke adjusted the spear across his shoulder.

"If it really is connected to the Verdant elves, Ancient Root Recognition might tell us something."

"That's what I'm hoping."

They left the city together and followed the road toward the southern terraces.

The landscape was greener than the hills surrounding the western road. Long stone walls divided the slopes into broad steps planted with vegetables, flowering herbs, and rows of fruit trees. Narrow channels carried water between the fields, while workers moved along the terraces with baskets strapped to their backs.

The cultivated land gradually gave way to older ground. Grass filled the irrigation channels, branches grew across the road, and weathered stone sheds leaned beneath curtains of ivy.

Lauren slowed as they climbed the final terrace. Her attention shifted toward the hill ahead.

"I can feel it again."

Luke looked toward her. "The same thing as the symbol?"

"Stronger."

A ruined structure stood ahead, its broken frame rising above the abandoned terraces. The conservatory had once been enormous, with curved ribs of pale metal forming a broad oval skeleton over the hillside and fragments of green-tinted glass still clinging to the upper frame.

Most of the roof had collapsed inward, allowing vines and several young trees to grow through what had once been carefully arranged planting beds. Luke stepped through the broken entrance first and checked the floor for loose glass before waving Lauren forward.

Her attention had already settled on the center of the ruin.

"Something is under us."

Ancient Root Recognition activated, and pale green lines spread beneath the floor.

Luke stopped to watch them. The roots did not resemble the wild growth pushing through the broken conservatory. The plants above grew wherever light and water allowed, while the system beneath their feet followed deliberate channels, curving around foundations and converging beneath old planting platforms.

The deeper network responded more strongly as Lauren moved toward it. Ancient Root Recognition traced the living pathways without difficulty, and the faint Verdant mana inside them felt familiar enough that Lauren no longer doubted the connection.

"My bloodline is reacting to this place."

Luke glanced toward her. "Even at five percent?"

"It doesn't seem to need much."

The roots converged beneath a collapsed platform near the back of the ruin. Luke followed while Lauren traced the system through the ground.

A pile of broken stone covered part of the platform. After clearing a few smaller pieces, Luke found the top of a stairway beneath them.

"I can move this."

Lauren crouched beside him. "Your game wrist is fine, but don't prove it by grabbing the biggest rock you can find."

Luke shifted another chunk of masonry to his left side anyway.

Inside Powerforge, Compensation made the damaged hand work normally. That did not erase several weeks of protecting it in the real world, and Luke still found himself favoring his left whenever he had time to think about what he was doing.

He cleared the smaller debris without touching Reinforce. Rather than grabbing the largest slab and forcing it aside, Luke worked around it, removing loose bricks and broken tile until the heavier section could be rolled enough to expose the stairway.

Lauren studied the entrance once it was clear. Four thick roots crossed the stairway like bars, and each passed through a carved stone ring before disappearing into the foundation.

"These aren't overgrowth."

Luke brushed dirt from his palms. "A lock?"

"Maybe."

Lauren activated Ancient Root Recognition again and touched the first ring. A symbol appeared beneath the moss.

A seed.

The next showed a sprout. The third displayed a branching tree, while the final carving depicted a fruit hanging from a stem.

Luke studied the sequence. "Seed, sprout, tree, fruit. That looks deliberate."

Lauren traced the four symbols. "Let's find out."

She touched the seed first. The root tightened but did not withdraw, so she moved to the sprout, then the tree, and finally the fruit.

The stairway vibrated beneath their feet as roots slid free of the stone rings one after another. They withdrew into narrow channels along the walls while dirt sifted from the opening and the sealed passage cleared.

[Legacy access sequence accepted.]

[Verdant maintenance route opened.]

Luke retrieved his spear, and they descended together into a passage much larger than he expected. Smooth stone walls curved around a long staircase, while living roots covered much of the ceiling and faint green light moved beneath their bark in slow pulses, illuminating carvings set into the walls.

Lauren paused beside one of them. Ancient Root Recognition gave her an impression before she spoke.

"Growth. Preservation. Renewal."

"Seed vault?"

"Probably."

Her fingers lingered on the carving. "This place is old enough that whoever built it may have been connected to the Verdant elves."

Luke looked farther down the stairs. "Think it predates Lethariel?"

"I can't tell from this."

They continued downward, with Luke paying more attention to the carvings than he had before.

The quest marker updated when they reached the lower level.

[Quest route updated.]

[Seed Vault: Lower Conservatory.]

The stairs opened into a circular chamber. Three stone corridors led away from it, each marked by a small metal plate.

One.

Two.

Three.

Lauren stopped near the center and studied the old root network surrounding them. There was natural soil beneath several sections of the floor, and under different circumstances this would have been almost perfect terrain for Oracle's Heartwood.

She rested one hand against the nearest living root. "Once they clear a full Heartwood transformation, I want to test it somewhere like this."

Luke looked around the chamber. "We'll remember the place."

Lauren gave the root a final touch before stepping away.

A scraping sound came from the third corridor, cutting off the quiet moment. Both of them went still while something heavy dragged across stone beyond the bend, followed several seconds later by a dull impact.

Lauren raised one hand and used Oracle's Glimpse for only a few seconds before releasing it.

Luke watched her face. "What's there?"

"Something large is moving near the third case."

He lowered the spear from his shoulder and settled both hands around the shaft. A moment later, the scraping came again, closer this time.
