Sword God

Chapter 67: The Sword Within
The white space stretched endlessly in every direction.
There was no ground beneath Subin's feet, yet he could walk.
There was no sky above him, yet he could look upward.
There was no wind, no sound, no smell, and no trace of mana.
Most importantly, there was no sword.
Subin continued forward.
His right hand remained slightly open where Simple Edge had disappeared.
He didn't try to summon it.
He didn't ask the system where it had gone.
The seventh layer had already given him its condition.
[No External Sword.]
He understood.
This wasn't a test of whether he could fight without a weapon.
He had already done that.
Weaponless Sword had reached 82%.
This trial was asking something deeper.
Could the sword path continue when the sword itself was removed?
Subin walked.
After several minutes, nothing happened.
He kept walking.
After what felt like an hour, the white space remained exactly the same.
No enemy appeared.
No notification appeared.
No technique was presented.
Subin eventually stopped.
"So I just keep walking?"
Silence answered him.
He looked around.
Nothing.
Subin sat down.
If the dungeon wanted him to wait, he could wait.
He closed his eyes.
Without the sword in his hand, his attention naturally turned inward.
His breathing slowed.
His physical surroundings disappeared from his awareness.
Foundation.
He remembered the first time he had learned Basic Sword Flow.
He had thought swordsmanship was about movement.
Then he had learned that movement required structure.
Flow came next.
Movement couldn't simply be correct.
It had to connect.
Control.
A sword without control was simply a dangerous object.
Intent.
The sword became meaningful only when the swordsman knew why he was moving.
Edge.
The purpose of the sword became clearer through the ability to separate what needed to be cut from what didn't.
Continuity.
One action became another.
Adaptation.
The principles couldn't become chains.
Choice.
A swordsman had to decide.
Subin opened his eyes.
He understood all seven.
Yet something still felt incomplete.
He had spent so much time learning what a sword could do that he had rarely questioned what remained when the sword was removed.
Subin raised his empty hand.
He imagined Simple Edge.
The weight.
The grip.
The balance.
The slight resistance when the blade moved through the air.
The sensation of Sword Intent flowing through its edge.
He could reproduce the memory perfectly.
But it was still only memory.
The sword wasn't there.
Subin lowered his hand.
"Then I don't need to recreate it."
He stood.
The first step forward felt different.
He wasn't imagining a sword anymore.
He was imagining the decision to cut.
Nothing appeared.
He continued.
Another step.
The intention to defend.
Nothing.
Another step.
The intention to move.
Still nothing.
Subin began walking faster.
Attack.
Defense.
Movement.
Observation.
Decision.
He mentally shifted between them.
Nothing.
Then he stopped.
A faint sensation appeared in his palm.
Not a sword.
Not even Sword Intent.
A direction.
Subin looked at his hand.
The sensation disappeared.
He smiled.
"That's it."
He understood the problem.
He had been searching for the sword.
But the sword had never been the beginning.
The decision had come first.
The sword simply gave that decision form.
Subin closed his eyes again.
He imagined no weapon.
Instead, he imagined a line.
A single boundary separating two points.
Then he imagined crossing it.
His hand moved.
Nothing happened.
But the white space changed.
A thin black line appeared several meters in front of him.
Subin stared at it.
The line was impossibly thin.
It wasn't a sword.
It wasn't an attack.
It was simply a division in the empty space.
Subin approached it.
The moment his fingers touched the line, it vanished.
The system appeared.
[Conceptual Sword Expression detected.]
Subin's eyes narrowed.
The system continued.
[External weapon requirement: bypassed temporarily.]
[Weaponless Sword compatibility increased.]
[82% → 85%.]
Subin didn't celebrate.
He understood that this was only the beginning.
The white space suddenly changed.
Hundreds of lines appeared.
Vertical.
Horizontal.
Diagonal.
Curved.
Some were close.
Others stretched across enormous distances.
The entire space became covered in boundaries.
The system appeared.
[Trial Phase Two.]
[Cut one boundary.]
Subin looked around.
"Which one?"
No answer.
He understood immediately.
Choice.
There was no correct target.
He had to choose.
Subin walked toward a small vertical line.
He raised his hand.
Then stopped.
"No."
He turned away.
He approached another.
A long diagonal boundary.
He stopped again.
"No."
He continued walking.
Eventually he found one almost impossible to notice.
A tiny line between two points.
It wasn't the longest.
It wasn't the strongest.
It didn't appear important.
But Subin could feel a slight difference.
The boundary represented separation.
He raised his empty hand.
His fingers moved.
The line broke.
Nothing exploded.
There was no shockwave.
The white space simply became quieter.
The system appeared.
[Boundary successfully severed.]
[Understanding of Boundary Cutting increased.]
[Boundary Cutting: Conceptual Understanding → Basic Application.]
Subin looked at his hand.
He had just performed a sword technique without a sword.
But it didn't feel like a technique.
That distinction mattered.
He wasn't creating an invisible sword.
He was applying the principle of cutting without requiring a physical blade.
The realization made his expression serious.
If he pushed this understanding too far, he could easily lose the meaning of swordsmanship.
A swordsman shouldn't simply become someone who could cut anything without a sword.
That would turn the sword path into something else.
Subin shook his head.
"No."
He didn't want that.
The sword was still important to him.
He didn't want to abandon it.
He wanted to understand why it worked.
The white space changed again.
The hundreds of boundaries disappeared.
A single figure appeared ahead.
Subin recognized it immediately.
Himself.
Another Subin stood several meters away.
But this time the copy wasn't holding a sword.
Neither was the real Subin.
The copy looked at him.
Then spoke.
"You don't need a sword anymore."
Subin stared at it.
"That's not true."
The copy tilted its head.
"You just cut a boundary without one."
"I did."
"Then why keep using a sword?"
Subin considered the question.
Because the sword was powerful?
No.
Because Simple Edge had perfect compatibility?
No.
Because the Sword God class demanded it?
That wasn't enough.
He had already chosen the path before understanding everything about it.
Subin answered calmly.
"Because I want to."
The copy remained silent.
Subin continued.
"I don't use a sword because I need one to survive. I use it because I want to understand the sword."
The copy attacked.
Its empty hand moved.
A conceptual blade formed.
Subin raised his own hand.
Their invisible edges collided.
The impact created no sound.
Yet the entire space trembled.
The copy attacked again.
Subin countered.
Neither possessed a physical weapon.
But both were expressing swordsmanship through intent and decision.
The battle became increasingly complicated.
The copy knew everything Subin knew.
Every principle.
Every technique.
Every movement.
Every habit.
But there was one thing it couldn't copy.
Subin's decision in the present moment.
The copy predicted his attack.
Subin changed it.
The copy adapted.
Subin changed again.
The copy followed.
Subin suddenly stopped.
The copy stopped too.
Both stood facing each other.
Subin smiled.
"You know everything I've learned."
The copy nodded.
"But you only know what I've already decided."
The copy's expression changed.
Subin moved.
Not according to a technique.
Not according to a principle.
He simply chose.
His hand passed through the copy's defense.
The conceptual blade touched its chest.
The copy dissolved.
[Self-Concept Trial Complete.]
[Weaponless Sword: 85% → 89%.]
[Sword Intent Comprehension: 81% → 83%.]
[Personal Sword Path: 99.9%.]
Subin looked at the last value.
Again.
99.9%.
He laughed quietly.
"Still there."
The white space began disappearing.
The endless emptiness collapsed inward.
Subin found himself standing in the center of the sixth layer again.
Simple Edge appeared in his right hand.
He looked at it.
The sword felt exactly the same.
Yet his relationship with it felt different.
The system appeared.
[Seventh Layer Trial: Complete.]
[Deep Core Territory — Core Trial completed.]
[Weaponless Sword: 89%.]
[Sword Intent Comprehension: 83%.]
[Personal Sword Path: 99.9%.]
Then another message appeared.
[Reward calculation.]
Subin waited.
[Reward: None.]
He blinked.
"No reward?"
The system continued.
[The understanding itself is the reward.]
Subin stared at the message for several seconds.
Then he laughed.
"Fair enough."
A massive vibration traveled through the dungeon.
The entire Deep Core Territory began changing.
The walls opened.
The seven layers started connecting.
Mana rushed through the corridors.
The dungeon wasn't collapsing.
It was reorganizing.
The system appeared once more.
[Deep Core Territory fully cleared.]
[New function unlocked: Deep Mana Core.]
[Dungeon Resource Access expanded.]
[High-density mana collection is now available.]
Subin looked toward the center of the dungeon.
A massive crystal formation emerged from beneath the floor.
Its color was deep blue.
Mana flowed through it like a river.
This wasn't simply a mana crystal.
It was the core of the Deep Core Territory.
Subin approached it.
The system displayed its information.
[Deep Mana Core.]
[Grade: Legendary.]
[Purity: 97.4%.]
[Stored Mana: 1,284,000.]
Subin's eyes widened.
That was an enormous amount of mana.
But he didn't immediately absorb it.
He remembered the Choice trial.
Power wasn't valuable simply because it existed.
He looked at the core.
Then at Simple Edge.
"I'll take what I need."
The system responded.
[Selection recognized.]
[Mana extraction interface unlocked.]
Subin began calculating how much mana he could safely absorb.
He wouldn't take everything.
He didn't need everything.
And there was another reason.
The dungeon itself needed the core to continue functioning.
If he drained it completely, the entire ecosystem might collapse.
That would be wasteful.
Subin selected a controlled amount.
A stream of mana entered his body.
His muscles tightened.
His mana circuits expanded.
The energy was extremely pure.
He guided it slowly through his body, refining it rather than simply storing it.
Minutes passed.
Then the flow stopped.
[Mana capacity increased.]
[Mana: 32 → 41.]
Subin looked at the number.
Only nine points.
Compared with the amount of mana he had absorbed, the increase seemed small.
But he knew better.
His body had converted the energy efficiently.
The remaining mana stayed inside the Deep Mana Core.
The dungeon remained stable.
Subin nodded.
"That's enough."
He turned away.
The exit appeared.
Beyond it was the upper section of Skyfall Dungeon.
For the first time since entering the dungeon, Subin could see the faint light of the surface far above.
He started walking.
He had entered Skyfall Dungeon as a B-rank swordsman searching for growth.
He was leaving with something far more valuable than another weapon or technique.
He had learned that the sword could be held in the hand.
It could be expressed through the body.
It could exist through intent.
But the sword path itself belonged to the swordsman.
And he still had 0.1% left to understand.
Subin smiled.
"Let's see how far that last 0.1% takes me."
He climbed toward the surface.
Behind him, the Deep Core Territory remained alive.
The dungeon continued generating mana.
The monsters continued evolving.
And somewhere beyond Earth, countless other worlds continued moving according to their own struggles.
Subin didn't know any of that yet.
For now, he only had one objective.
Become stronger.
Understand the sword.
And keep walking forward.
