Chapter 66: The Sword That Moved on Its Own
The staircase continued downward.
Subin descended slowly, one step at a time, while the atmosphere around him became increasingly heavy. The mana density was far greater than in the previous layers, but that wasn't what concerned him.
It was the Sword Intent.
He could feel it.
Not from a weapon.
Not from a monster.
Not from the walls.
It was coming from somewhere below.
The pressure was faint, yet strangely precise. Unlike the violent Sword Intent of the Sword Beast, this one didn't attempt to overwhelm everything around it. It was almost completely contained.
That made it more difficult to understand.
Subin continued descending.
After several dozen steps, the staircase ended.
He entered a massive circular chamber.
There were no treasures.
No monsters.
No hundreds of weapons.
Only a gigantic stone floor surrounded by twelve enormous pillars.
At the center of the chamber stood a sword.
It was embedded vertically into the ground.
The blade was black.
The hilt was plain.
There were no decorations.
No jewels.
No inscriptions.
Yet Subin immediately knew that this sword was different.
He stopped several meters away.
The Sword Intent surrounding it was incredibly pure.
Subin didn't approach.
Instead, he observed.
The sword didn't release its Sword Intent outward.
It simply existed.
Its presence alone was enough to alter the atmosphere.
The system appeared.
[Deep Core Territory — Sixth Layer.]
[Trial Type: Sword and Swordsman.]
[Special Condition: Autonomous Sword Intent.]
Subin frowned.
"Autonomous?"
The sword moved.
Only slightly.
Its tip lifted from the ground.
Subin's eyes narrowed.
The sword completely removed itself from the stone.
It floated in the air.
Then it pointed toward him.
Subin slowly drew Simple Edge.
The floating sword attacked.
It crossed the chamber without warning.
Subin raised his blade.
Clang!
The collision sent a vibration through his arm.
The floating sword immediately changed direction.
It attacked again.
Subin blocked.
Again.
Another strike.
Subin parried.
The sword moved without a visible wielder.
Yet its movements weren't random.
They were precise.
Every strike followed a principle.
The first was Foundation.
The second was Flow.
The third was Control.
Then Edge.
Continuity.
Adaptation.
Subin's eyes sharpened.
"This sword knows the principles."
The weapon suddenly disappeared.
Subin's Predator's Sense reacted.
He turned.
The sword appeared behind him.
He ducked.
The blade passed over his head.
Subin rotated and attacked.
The floating sword blocked his strike.
Then something strange happened.
It copied his movement.
Subin's eyes widened.
The sword performed the exact same rotation he had just used.
He stepped backward.
The sword followed.
A second exchange began.
This time Subin deliberately changed his rhythm.
The sword adapted.
He changed again.
It adapted again.
Subin stopped attacking.
The sword stopped as well.
The chamber became silent.
Subin stared at it.
"You aren't copying my techniques."
The sword remained pointed toward him.
"You're understanding my decisions."
The sword moved.
A straight thrust.
Subin shifted aside.
The sword immediately turned.
A horizontal cut.
He blocked.
The weapon changed direction.
A downward strike.
Subin parried.
Another thrust.
Another cut.
The sword was not merely reproducing his movements.
It was predicting what he would choose.
Subin's expression became increasingly serious.
This was different from fighting the self-copy in the earlier layer.
That projection had possessed his techniques.
This sword was learning from his decisions in real time.
Subin suddenly lowered Simple Edge.
The floating sword stopped.
"Then I'll give you something you can't predict."
He closed his eyes.
The sword attacked.
Subin didn't look.
His body moved.
The blade passed beside his face.
He turned and deflected it.
The sword changed direction.
Subin moved again.
He wasn't using sight.
He wasn't relying on Sword Intent.
He was using perception.
The sword accelerated.
Subin's movements became smoother.
Every attack was answered by the smallest possible movement.
He didn't try to overpower the sword.
He simply refused to give it a predictable pattern.
The sword suddenly stopped.
Subin opened his eyes.
The floating blade remained several meters away.
Then its Sword Intent changed.
It became stronger.
The twelve pillars around the chamber began glowing.
The floor beneath Subin transformed.
A circular arena formed.
[Trial Phase Two.]
[The sword will now choose its own movements.]
Subin smiled.
"Finally."
The sword moved.
This time there was no recognizable sequence.
It didn't begin with Foundation.
It didn't follow Flow.
It didn't transition according to any obvious pattern.
It simply attacked.
Subin blocked.
The sword changed.
He countered.
It changed again.
The weapon was making decisions independently.
Subin realized the purpose immediately.
The first phase had tested whether he could fight something that understood his decisions.
The second phase was testing whether he could fight something whose decisions were completely independent.
The sword accelerated.
Subin's Simple Edge collided with it repeatedly.
The sound of metal echoed through the chamber.
Their movements became faster.
The floating sword was incredibly efficient.
There was no wasted motion.
Subin couldn't find a weakness.
Every time he created an opening, the sword changed its trajectory.
Every time he attempted to control its position, it escaped.
It was like fighting a swordsman who had no habits.
Subin's eyes narrowed.
"No habits..."
He suddenly stopped.
The floating sword struck.
Subin didn't block.
He stepped forward.
The blade passed beside his ribs.
Simple Edge moved toward the sword's center.
The floating sword shifted.
Subin's sword changed direction.
The two blades crossed.
The floating sword attempted to retreat.
Subin followed.
Then he stopped.
The floating sword stopped too.
Subin stared at it.
A realization emerged.
The sword was making independent decisions.
But it still had one limitation.
It had to decide.
And every decision created a transition.
Subin had already learned Intent Transition.
He didn't need to predict the sword's next technique.
He only needed to recognize the moment when its intention changed.
Attack to defense.
Defense to movement.
Movement to attack.
Every transition created a microscopic instability.
Subin waited.
The sword attacked.
He didn't counter.
The blade changed direction.
Still nothing.
The sword attempted to retreat.
There.
Subin moved.
Simple Edge struck.
Clang!
The floating sword was knocked several meters away.
For the first time, it lost control of its position.
Subin didn't chase it.
He waited.
The sword recovered.
Then attacked again.
Subin waited for another transition.
Strike.
Block.
Retreat.
Transition.
Cut.
The sword was forced backward.
Its movements became increasingly restricted.
Not because Subin was faster.
Not because he was stronger.
He was simply controlling the moments between decisions.
The sword suddenly stopped.
Its blade pointed toward Subin.
Then its Sword Intent exploded.
The entire chamber shook.
Subin's expression changed.
The sword had entered its final phase.
[Autonomous Sword Intent: 100%.]
[Final Trial.]
The sword disappeared.
Subin immediately raised Simple Edge.
A blade appeared directly in front of his chest.
He blocked.
The impact sent him backward.
Before he could stabilize, another attack came from behind.
He turned.
Blocked.
A third attack came from the side.
He parried.
Then a fourth.
A fifth.
A sixth.
The sword was no longer moving like a single weapon.
It seemed to exist in multiple positions simultaneously.
Subin's eyes became focused.
He couldn't fight every attack separately.
He had to find the source.
He closed his eyes.
Sword Intent spread through the chamber.
He didn't amplify it.
He didn't force it outward.
He simply allowed his perception to touch the surrounding space.
There.
One presence.
Everything else was an expression of it.
Subin opened his eyes.
The real sword appeared above him.
He moved.
Simple Edge struck upward.
The two swords collided.
A shockwave spread across the chamber.
The floating sword was pushed upward.
Subin followed.
Their blades met again.
Then again.
Subin gradually changed his movements.
He stopped trying to defeat the sword.
Instead, he began communicating through his attacks.
A thrust.
The sword answered.
A retreat.
The sword followed.
A change in angle.
The sword adapted.
Each exchange became a conversation.
Sword against sword.
Intent against intent.
Decision against decision.
Then Subin made a choice that the sword couldn't predict.
He released Simple Edge.
The weapon fell from his hand.
The autonomous sword stopped.
For a fraction of a second, it didn't understand.
Subin stepped forward with an empty hand.
The floating sword attacked.
Subin caught the flat of the blade with his palm.
Sword Intent flowed through his body.
Not outward.
Not as an attack.
He simply accepted the sword's movement.
Then he redirected it.
The autonomous sword flew past him.
Subin caught Simple Edge as it fell.
He turned.
One clean cut.
The floating sword stopped.
A crack appeared across its blade.
Then another.
The black sword shattered into countless particles of light.
The chamber became silent.
The system appeared.
[Autonomous Sword Intent Trial Complete.]
[Intent Transition: Advanced understanding acquired.]
[Sword Intent Comprehension: 76% → 81%.]
[Weaponless Sword: 77% → 82%.]
[Personal Sword Path: 99.9%.]
Subin slowly lowered Simple Edge.
He looked at his empty hand.
The most important part of the trial hadn't been the final attack.
It had been the moment he let go of his sword.
For a swordsman who had spent his entire journey refining his relationship with the blade, deliberately releasing it could have felt like abandoning his path.
But it wasn't.
The sword was a tool.
The path existed within the swordsman.
He had understood that before.
Now he had experienced it.
Subin looked at Simple Edge.
"You were never the source."
The sword remained silent.
"But you help me express it."
The weapon vibrated faintly.
Subin smiled.
Then the system appeared again.
[Sixth Layer Complete.]
[Deep Core Territory progression: 4/7.]
[Seventh Layer unlocked.]
Subin looked toward the opposite side of the chamber.
A massive stone door had appeared.
Unlike the previous doors, this one had no staircase.
Instead, the door itself was covered with hundreds of sword marks.
Subin approached.
The moment he touched it, the marks began connecting.
One line.
Then another.
Hundreds of cuts formed a massive symbol.
Subin stared at it.
He didn't recognize the language.
But he understood the meaning.
Sword Path.
The door opened.
A completely different atmosphere came from beyond it.
There was no intense Sword Intent.
No overwhelming mana.
Instead, there was silence.
Absolute silence.
Subin stepped through.
The seventh layer was enormous.
There was no floor.
No ceiling.
No visible walls.
He appeared to be standing in an endless white space.
Simple Edge remained in his hand.
The system displayed one final message.
[Deep Core Territory — Seventh Layer.]
[Special Condition: No External Sword.]
Subin looked at his sword.
Then at the empty white space.
A faint smile appeared on his face.
"So this is the next lesson."
His fingers tightened around Simple Edge.
The sword suddenly became weightless.
Then—
it disappeared from his hand.
Subin looked at his empty palm.
The system appeared.
[Final Deep Core Trial initiated.]
[Objective: Continue the sword path without a sword.]
Subin stood alone in the endless white space.
For the first time since awakening as a Sword God, he had no sword in his hand.
Yet he didn't feel weaker.
He simply began walking forward.
