Chapter 92: Chapter 92: Must Be Severely Punished
It was past eight in the evening in Room 1104, Unit 3, Building 23 of the Zijin Garden District.
Having returned to the apartment with the Yu Family Siblings, Gu Qingning couldn’t hold back her questions any longer and finally spoke up.
"Yu Zhiming, you don’t seem very worried about that examination report. Its conclusion is very bad for you, you know?"
Because of his big sister’s arrival, Yu Zhiming’s mood had improved considerably, and he wore a rare, pleasant expression for Gu Qingning.
"In the early stages of cancer, the cancer cells are actually hidden in a very small lesion. Only a biopsy of that exact area can detect the cancer."
"So, the conclusion of the examination report from Jiaoda Affiliated Hospital was within Teacher Qi’s and my expectations."
Yu Zhiming smiled, his tone light. "Let’s let public opinion fester for one more night. Let those online trolls run wild and celebrate for another evening. We’ll launch our winning counterattack tomorrow."
Gu Qingning let out a long "Ohhh" and chuckled. "Seeing how confident you are, it seems you’re certain of victory."
Yu Zhiming’s expression immediately fell. He sighed heavily. "What certainty? I’m just putting on a brave face."
"But I’ve come to terms with it."
"I have a family that cares for and loves me, so it’s okay even if I fail. It’s not the end of the world. At worst, I’ll spend a few months in prison. I’ll still be a good man when I get out."
The moment these words left Yu Zhiming’s mouth, Yu Zhaoxia gave his head an unapologetic whack.
"Don’t say such pessimistic things. You’ll be fine."
Yu Zhiming responded with a sheepish grin.
Gu Qingning clearly noticed that with his big sister’s arrival, Yu Zhiming’s entire mental state had changed drastically.
’His big sister’s influence on him is really something else,’ she thought.
Just then, Yu Zhaoxia handed Yu Zhiming an erhu.
"Dad said you’re under a lot of pressure in Binhai and need something to help you relax. I brought this erhu for you."
"Dad said you should start playing the erhu again."
Seeing the curiosity in Gu Qingning’s eyes, Yu Xiangwan explained in a low voice, "When Fifth Brother’s eyesight was poor, he practiced the erhu for a few years, thinking he could make a living with it someday."
Gu Qingning had a moment of realization.
"The erhu, standard issue for a blind person."
Yu Zhaoxia urged him again, "Fifth Brother, hurry up and play ’Iron Blood, Loyal Heart’."
"Let me see if you’ve forgotten all your erhu skills."
Yu Zhiming was exasperated.
His big sister was a huge fan of the theme songs from the Hong Kong version of *The Legend of the Condor Heroes*. During the years he practiced the erhu, she had forced him to play them countless times.
He was sick to death of hearing them.
However, seeing his big sister excitedly pull out her phone to search for a backing track, Yu Zhiming had no choice but to sit down and quickly tune his erhu...
Perhaps because he had played "Iron Blood, Loyal Heart" so many times before, the memory was ingrained in his very bones.
After reacquainting himself with the erhu for just a moment and with the help of the backing track, he managed to play the piece quite presentably, giving a nearly perfect performance.
This surprised even Yu Zhiming himself.
"God never lets a skilled blind man starve. Even if I can’t be a doctor anymore, with my erhu skills, I can still make a living playing at funerals and weddings back home."
"Look at you and your grand ambitions."
Yu Zhaoxia whacked Yu Zhiming’s head again, then stood up and changed the subject. "We still haven’t eaten dinner."
"Fifth Brother, what do you want to eat?"
Yu Zhiming grabbed his big sister’s hand. "Big Sister, you must be tired after rushing here."
"There are still plenty of dumplings in the fridge. Just have Fourth Sister boil some bowls. You don’t need to trouble yourself."
Yu Xiangwan tactfully stood up. "Big Sister, Fifth Brother is right. You rest. I’ll go boil the dumplings..."
Gu Qingning followed Yu Xiangwan into the kitchen, making a show of helping out.
"Yu Zhiming and his big sister’s relationship really is something special."
Yu Xiangwan sighed softly. "We’re all used to it. We’re not jealous at all. After all, Big Sister was the one who saved Fifth Brother’s life."
Gu Qingning widened her big, charming eyes, looking like a curious child.
Yu Xiangwan then briefly recounted the story of how Yu Zhiming was seriously injured as a child, and how their big sister had used her own breast milk to snatch his life back from King Yama.
"So that’s how it was."
Gu Qingning nodded lightly. "No wonder he’s so uniquely attached to his big sister..."
Dinner was very simple.
A large bowl of dumplings for each person, plus two plates of braised meats, as well as freshly mixed cold dishes, pickles, and mashed garlic.
At the dinner table, Yu Zhaoxia brought something up.
"Fifth Brother, that troublesome second son of Third Uncle Qin’s coughed up blood again."
Yu Zhiming let out an "oh" and asked curiously, "Sounds like he got beaten again. What was it for this time?"
Third Uncle Qin’s second son was only thirteen. He had been terribly spoiled in his early years and had turned into a little terror everyone detested—the kind who’d climb on roofs and tease animals.
In recent years, Third Uncle Qin had changed his approach, trying to straighten out his son’s temperament through "stick education."
But one time, he hit him too hard and accidentally made the boy cough up blood.
From then on, the boy seemed to have developed a lingering problem; every time he was hit, he would cough up blood.
Yu Zhiming had also given the boy a physical examination but hadn’t found anything wrong.
Because of this blood-coughing issue, Third Uncle Qin was becoming more and more hesitant to discipline his second son.
This led to the boy becoming even more unruly, to the point where he probably thought he could fly to the sun.
Yu Zhaoxia couldn’t help but chuckle. "He shaved all the fur off his west-side neighbor’s little dog. And it was a terrible shave, too."
"The old lady who owns the dog was so angry she fainted and had to spend three or four days recovering in the hospital."
"They say it cost five or six thousand yuan."
"After having to pay so much in compensation, Third Uncle Qin couldn’t take it anymore. He caught the boy and gave him a beating, and the result was he coughed up blood again."
"Third Aunt Qin said this constant blood-coughing isn’t normal, and neither you nor the county hospital could find anything wrong."
"Third Aunt Qin wanted me to ask you if she should bring her son to Binhai for a check-up."
Before Yu Zhiming could even speak, Gu Qingning eagerly jumped in.
"He only coughs up blood when he’s about to be beaten for causing big trouble?"
"Why does this scenario feel so familiar?"
Gu Qingning said with great interest, "I have a very naughty cousin who was a real headache when we were kids, and he used to do the same thing."
"It turned out that every time he sensed he was about to get a beating, he would secretly hold a mouthful of ketchup in his mouth."
Yu Zhiming said thoughtfully, "I wouldn’t rule out that possibility. That kid is capable of something like that."
"Even if not ketchup, I think he’s ruthless enough to bite his own tongue or the inside of his mouth."
"Big Sister, talk to Third Aunt Qin first. Tell her to double-check that the boy isn’t just faking it."
"That way they won’t waste money coming all the way to Binhai for nothing."
Yu Zhaoxia grunted in agreement, then couldn’t help but sneak a few more glances at Gu Qingning beside her.
She had already learned a lot about this girl from Yu Xiangwan, including the fact that she and Yu Zhiming had some small, bickering conflicts.
But in Yu Zhaoxia’s eyes, this had the makings of a bickering couple—a perfect match born from conflict.
The more Yu Zhaoxia looked at Gu Qingning, the more she liked her.
Even when examining her with a critical eye, Yu Zhaoxia had to admit the girl had excellent looks and a good physique. She wasn’t pretentious and carried herself with a dignified air.
’If I had to find a flaw, it’s that she’s a little on the thin side, which isn’t ideal for childbearing.’
’Then again, seeing her heartily eating those dumplings without a hint of coyness, she doesn’t seem like a picky eater who’d be hard to care for.’
’It shouldn’t be too hard to get her to gain another fifteen or twenty pounds after a few months of good food...’
As Yu Zhaoxia was secretly sizing up her potential sister-in-law, the release of Liu Xuan’s breast examination report had triggered a new wave of attacks against Yu Zhiming online.
This time, the condemnation was nearly unanimous.
Even the few voices defending Yu Zhiming were drowned out by the tidal wave of public outrage, disappearing without so much as a ripple.
The many attacks converged into a single consensus:
Severe punishment!
He must be severely punished!
They absolutely could not let him off easy with a private settlement just because he was talented.
If a doctor lacks medical ethics, then the greater their ability, the greater the harm they could cause in the future.
Only severe punishment—to deter future misconduct—was the bitter medicine that could give Yu Zhiming a new lease on life...
