Chapter 37: Chapter 37: Act First, Report Later

A little after 5:30 PM, a tall, refined-looking young man with glasses walked into the lobby of the Youyou Grand Hotel and found an empty spot on a sofa in the seating area to sit down.

About ten minutes later, he was joined by a petite and beautiful girl in a professional skirt suit, who hurried over to him.

"Yuanhang, I bought the two outfits for your parents. Take a look. What do you think?"

Wu Yuanhang stood up, took the bag from her, and then quickly ushered her into his seat.

"If you’re the one who picked them out, my parents are sure to love them. I don’t even need to look."

Wu Yuanhang then asked with concern, "How was your interview today?"

The girl shook her head, her face full of disappointment. "I didn’t do well. I don’t think I’ll make it to the next round."

Wu Yuanhang reached out and stroked the top of her head, comforting her. "Good things come to those who wait. Look at me—I only just found a pretty good job a few days ago."

"Wanwan, we’re not in a rush."

"Besides, the pay and benefits at my new job are pretty good. I can definitely support you."

Qiu Wan shot him a playful glare.

"We’ll have to buy a house eventually. With property prices so high, we can’t possibly rely on you alone."

Qiu Wan’s face flushed slightly as she changed the subject. "Yuanhang, what made you suddenly decide to have someone from your hometown bring things over?"

"It only costs a dozen or so yuan to ship a package. Was it really necessary to bother someone?"

Wu Yuanhang chuckled. "I inconvenience him a little, then I take the opportunity to treat him to a meal. That’s how you build a connection, right?"

"My dad says this Dr. Yu is an incredible physician. He’s sure to establish himself at Huashan Hospital and have a very successful career."

"Getting on good terms with a doctor from a major hospital will be convenient if we ever need help in the future, don’t you think?"

Qiu Wan nodded in agreement. "That’s a good point."

She took her resume from her shoulder bag and looked it over. "Yuanhang, I think this resume of mine still needs some revision..."

Just then, Qiu Wan heard Wu Yuanhang’s voice.

"He’s here..."

Qiu Wan looked up and saw her boyfriend striding toward a tall, slender young man.

She quickly stood up, sizing up the newcomer as she followed.

He was a little taller than her boyfriend and somewhat thin, with short, slightly unkempt hair.

He had a handsome, oval-shaped face with almond eyes, long eyebrows, and a high-bridged nose.

’Hmm, his lips are nicely shaped, too, and so clearly defined. I wonder if he’s wearing makeup?’

’He has obvious dark circles under his eyes and looks exhausted. Did he just wake up from a nap...?’

Yu Zhiming had never met Dean Wu’s son before.

However, when a young man approached him proactively, one whose face bore a slight resemblance to Dean Wu, he recognized him at once.

"Wu Yuanhang!"

"Brother Yu, hello!"

Wu Yuanhang then gestured to Qiu Wan, who had joined him. "This is my girlfriend, Qiu Wan. She’s from Sichuan."

"Brother Yu, thanks so much for your help."

Yu Zhiming first nodded to Qiu Wan in greeting, then said to Wu Yuanhang with a light laugh, "It’s no trouble at all. It was a small favor, easily done."

"Besides, Dean Wu has been very kind to me."

Yu Zhiming added warmly, "We’re both making our way in Binhai now. People from the same region should help each other out."

"And it happens to be dinnertime. I hear the buffet at this hotel is quite good."

"Why don’t we eat together and get to know each other a little better?"

Wu Yuanhang beamed. "I was just about to suggest that, but let’s be clear about one thing..."

"Brother Yu, this meal is my treat. Don’t you dare try to pay!"

Just as Yu Zhiming was about to argue for the right to pay, his phone, which was in his pants pocket, started ringing.

He took out his phone to see who it was.

It was a call from Gu Qingran, of all people.

"Dean Gu..."

"Dr. Yu, are you at the hotel?"

"I am!"

"Excellent. There’s a matter I need your help with..."

Gu Qingran’s voice came over the phone, rapid and clear. "I have a patient here—a pregnant woman, thirty-one years old, her second child."

"She’s carrying twins, and her cervix is already dilated."

"But the fetuses are malpositioned. The mother doesn’t want a scar on her abdomen and is insisting against a C-section..."

Yu Zhiming cut in, "If I’m not mistaken, Ning’an Hospital is in the southwest of Binhai, isn’t it?"

"Rushing over there now, with traffic this bad, would take at least an hour or two."

"Her cervix is already dilated. There’s no time, is there?"

Gu Qingran chuckled over the phone. "Dr. Yu, you don’t need to come here. We’re bringing her to you."

"She’s en route and will be there very soon. Just wait in the hotel lobby for about ten minutes."

After ending the call with Gu Qingran, Yu Zhiming was a little bewildered.

’They’re bringing the patient *here*? What’s going on?’

’From Dean Gu’s description, the woman is about to give birth. Are they planning to deliver the babies right here in the hotel?’

Yu Zhiming didn’t have to wait more than a few minutes in his bewildered state before he saw Gu Qingran burst into the hotel lobby.

Right after, Yu Zhiming saw a large vehicle, painted with a red cross emblem and the words "Ning’an Hospital," slowly pull into the hotel’s front parking lot.

Gu Qingran came to Yu Zhiming’s side and explained, "Dr. Yu, this is our hospital’s mobile comprehensive medical vehicle."

"It’s fully equipped with all the necessary medical devices and instruments for emergency surgery. A procedure like a C-section is a simple matter. With enough prep time, we could even perform a major operation like a heart transplant in here."

As he spoke, the comprehensive medical vehicle came to a stop.

Yu Zhiming walked to the vehicle’s door in a few strides, stepped up onto the running board, and turned to look at Gu Qingran, who was right behind him.

"Are you assisting with the delivery?"

Gu Qingran shook his head.

"Then don’t come up and get in the way. We don’t want you bringing in any contaminants."

Gu Qingran quickly took a step back, rubbing his nose sheepishly.

He knew this act-first, ask-for-permission-later approach of his had annoyed Yu Zhiming.

He turned to Wu Yuanhang and Qiu Wan, who had followed them over, and asked with a smile, "And you two are with Dr. Yu...?"

After boarding the vehicle, Yu Zhiming scrubbed in, and with a nurse’s help, donned a surgical cap, mask, surgical gloves, and a sterile gown.

He then passed through a doorway into a rather cramped operating room.

Yu Zhiming gave the room a quick scan, finding that while it was small, it was fully equipped.

A pregnant woman, her forehead beaded with sweat, lay on the operating table.

Two other doctors and two nurses stood by the operating table.

Yu Zhiming approached the woman and, after a brief examination, found her cervix was already dilated to four fingers.

Fortunately, her water hadn’t broken yet.

If the amniotic sac had ruptured, the fetuses’ movements within the uterus would be severely restricted, and it would be much harder for Yu Zhiming to reposition them.

"Hello, I’m Dr. Yu Zhiming. Try not to be nervous. I’m going to adjust the babies’ positions."

"This is my specialty."

After offering the woman a brief word of reassurance, Yu Zhiming placed his hands on her lower abdomen and began to gently press and push...

One of the twins was in a transverse lie, its body horizontal in the uterus and its buttocks facing the cervix.

This was a type of malpresentation that made for an extremely dangerous and difficult birth.

Furthermore, the two babies’ umbilical cords were entangled.

The presence of the second baby made adjusting the position that much more difficult, requiring extremely gentle movements.

Most importantly, he had to be fast.

Her water could break at any second...

Yu Zhiming was completely focused. As he mentally simulated various paths to move the babies, his hands on the mother’s abdomen never stopped their gentle, pushing motions...

Before he knew it, his forehead was covered in sweat, and his head felt heavy and groggy.

The aftereffects of going several days without proper rest were catching up to him.

Now, as he pushed himself to the limit, his mental stamina was beginning to waver.

He had plenty of experience dealing with this kind of situation.

He bit down hard on the tip of his tongue.

Yu Zhiming could be quite harsh with himself. The sharp, intense pain from his tongue sent a jolt through his body and mind.

Instantly, he was wide awake...

A little over forty minutes later, an utterly exhausted Yu Zhiming descended from the comprehensive medical vehicle, his steps unsteady, to the sound of two crying infants.

Gu Qingran, who had rushed over, asked cautiously, "A vaginal delivery?"

Yu Zhiming gave a curt nod.

Qiu Wan, who had also gathered around, was astonished.

"That was so fast!"

"Don’t women usually have to go through hours of labor for a natural birth?"

Yu Zhiming explained patiently, "How quickly the delivery goes mainly depends on the mother’s individual situation."

"This was the mother’s second delivery, and twins are typically much smaller than singletons, so it was naturally a faster process."

Gu Qingran sidled up again, smiling ingratiatingly. "Dr. Yu, you’ve once again accomplished what others couldn’t, solving a difficult case with your masterful skill."

"I’ll spare you the flattery and expressions of gratitude."

"Dr. Yu, you must be exhausted and starving. I’ve already made arrangements at the Diamond Club."

"Please allow me to express a small token of my appreciation."

Right now, Yu Zhiming was truly exhausted and famished. And since the patient was fine, he couldn’t be bothered to deal with Gu Qingran.

He said, his voice tinged with impatience, "Forget about the Diamond Club. I don’t want to go anywhere. I just want a simple meal and then a good, long rest."

Yu Zhiming composed himself, then turned to Wu Yuanhang and Qiu Wan. "Sorry to keep you waiting."

"Come on, let’s go get that buffet. It’s on me!"

Wu Yuanhang chuckled. "Saving lives comes first. Besides, we really didn’t wait long at all."

"And besides..."

Wu Yuanhang glanced at Gu Qingran, who was standing beside him. "While I was chatting with Dean Gu, he found out that Qiu Wan is still job hunting, and he offered to recommend her for a position at the Ning’an Group."

Yu Zhiming couldn’t help but shoot a glance at Gu Qingran.

Gu Qingran chuckled. "It’s nothing, really. I’m just offering an interview opportunity. It will ultimately depend on Qiu Wan’s own qualifications."

After a brief pause, he added, "Shall we eat first?"

"I’m also curious to see how the buffet at this hotel tastes..."
