Chapter 183: Chapter 182: Person of Misfortune

The guy who came in for a physical today was the CEO of an international trading company.

He brought his family of six with him.

After a thorough examination, Yu Zhiming added two more issues to their list of existing health problems that required close monitoring.

The head of the household was at risk for coronary heart disease, with partial coronary artery stenosis approaching the fifty percent warning threshold.

And his father, who was in his early seventies, also had carotid artery stenosis nearing the same threshold...

The family left the examination room holding a promotional flyer for Junbo Interior Design.

While thanking Yu Zhiming, the man sincerely and repeatedly promised to give him business if he ever needed any renovations.

But Yu Zhiming knew the man was just saying it to be polite, placating him.

He knew because the man was shaking his hand as he said it.

And Yu Zhiming could clearly sense that the man’s heart rate hadn’t changed one bit.

’What a hypocrite. All talk and no action.’

Yu Zhiming cursed internally, casually adding the man to his mental blacklist of people to avoid...

At noon, Ding Ye, the beautiful doctor from gynecology, suddenly ran over to have lunch with Yu Zhiming at the staff cafeteria.

Qiao Lei shamelessly tagged along as well...

"Dr. Yu, first off, congratulations to you and Director Qi for finding the real cause of that child’s illness and successfully putting that guy Qiu Yi in his place."

"Here, let’s have a toast!"

Yu Zhiming chuckled and raised his small bowl of seaweed soup, gently clinking it against the one in Ding Ye’s hand.

Yu Zhiming took a sip of soup as Ding Ye’s voice rang out again.

"Qiu Yi completely lost this time. In a contest of medical skill, he was utterly defeated by you."

"Dr. Yu, you’re now recognized as the number one young doctor at Huashan Hospital."

Yu Zhiming gave a faint smile and said, "It was just one case, and a very unusual one at that."

"So many medical experts couldn’t diagnose it. It’s perfectly normal that a young doctor like him couldn’t either."

Ding Ye snorted softly. "The problem is, he’s so full of himself. He confidently snatched that little patient away from you."

"That’s why this slap in the face was especially loud."

"It was a classic case of the biter bit. He not only compromised his integrity but also lost the respect of his peers."

Ding Ye suddenly asked expectantly, "Dr. Yu, do you think he’ll just up and leave now?"

"With his skills, he’s still a hot commodity. He wouldn’t have trouble finding a good position elsewhere."

"With you here at Huashan Hospital, he’ll never have his day in the sun."

Yu Zhiming suddenly recalled the incident with Zhang Rui and said slowly, "Maybe he won’t leave. He might switch to the administrative track!"

Ding Ye paused for a moment, then said thoughtfully, "With the network his grandfather left him, he could actually do quite well on the administrative track."

"But wouldn’t that be a waste of all his medical training?"

Qiao Lei quickly interjected, "Some people only care about making a name for themselves as quickly as possible."

"From what I can tell, that guy values fame and success more than medical skill and saving lives."

Ding Ye was quiet for a moment. "To be honest, even though I can’t stand him, I wouldn’t want him to give up being a doctor."

"Oh, enough about him!"

Ding Ye looked at Yu Zhiming, who was focused on his food, and changed the subject. "Dr. Yu, didn’t you say you wanted to attend some of the young doctors’ social events?"

"Well, there’s a mixer coming up."

"A mixer? With who?" Qiao Lei cut in to ask.

Ding Ye shot him a look and said to Yu Zhiming, "A mixer with the Binhai Song and Dance Ensemble."

"Dr. Yu, it’s a song and dance ensemble! There are bound to be lots of gorgeous, well-built beauties there—easy on the eyes."

Yu Zhiming said firmly, "Not going..."

Sometime after four in the afternoon, Yu Zhiming and his mentor, Qi Yue, received a consultation patient transferred from the Capital City.

He was a fifty-one-year-old man, and after reviewing his file, Yu Zhiming felt a deep sense of sympathy for him.

A man truly forsaken by fate!

The man’s name was Qin Yuan. He was a native of the Capital City and had always been in poor health.

Five years ago, he underwent an interventional procedure for coronary heart disease and had three stents placed in his heart.

In addition, Qin Yuan suffered from moderate alcoholic liver disease, gout, and hypertension.

A year ago, his family’s old house was finally demolished for redevelopment, and compared to before, he was now considered a wealthy man.

But an even greater misfortune followed.

He was diagnosed with bladder cancer.

Since it was discovered in the early stages and bladder cancer progresses slowly, with active treatment, there was a high probability he could live another ten or twenty years.

However, as the saying goes, misfortunes never come singly.

For most people, getting one type of cancer is a great misfortune in life. Qin Yuan, however, had the rare misfortune of being struck three times.

This year, he was successively diagnosed with lymphoma and melanoma.

Today, accompanied by his family, Qin Yuan had traveled a great distance from the Capital City to Binhai, not for treatment of his cancers or his other existing conditions.

It was because he had developed a new symptom.

Chest pain.

It was so painful that Qin Yuan couldn’t rest properly.

But because of Qin Yuan’s plethora of health problems, his attending physician in the Capital City didn’t dare treat him casually without finding the exact cause of his chest pain.

They were worried that the wrong treatment would trigger a chain reaction, causing Qin Yuan’s condition to deteriorate rapidly...

Filled with sympathy, Yu Zhiming observed the frail, bald man in the wheelchair, Qin Yuan.

Qin Yuan, in turn, looked past Qi Yue to size up Yu Zhiming.

"Dr. Yu, I know I don’t have many days left. I just want to be able to eat well, drink well, and sleep well before the cancer makes my life an agonizing hell."

"When I was young, I couldn’t eat anything because of gout."

"Then I got hypertension and an alcoholic liver. Not only could I not eat, I couldn’t even drink."

"I’m so unlucky. Cursed with the worst luck imaginable."

As Qin Yuan lamented his fate, Yu Zhiming didn’t hear much weakness in his voice; in fact, he could still detect a certain strength.

This indicated that his body was still functioning normally.

"In my current situation, I was planning to enjoy myself before I die. Eat and drink my fill, and just die from overeating for all I care."

"But what’s driving me crazy is that heaven won’t even grant me this one small dying wish."

Qin Yuan raised a finger to his chest. "This chest pain... it’s keeping me from eating and sleeping well."

"The oncologists say the current state of my cancer shouldn’t be causing this kind of chest pain."

"But they can’t find the specific cause, so they just prescribe some safe, run-of-the-mill medication."

Qin Yuan said with great dissatisfaction, "I’m a dying man who’s been on a strict diet for years, counting my remaining days."

"There’s so much good food I haven’t tried yet. I don’t have time to waste while they slowly search for the cause."

He then held up two fingers to Yu Zhiming.

"Two days!"

"Dr. Yu, I came here because of your reputation. If you can find the source of my problem in two days..."

"Then you’re this..."

Qin Yuan gave Yu Zhiming a thumbs-up, then continued, "But if two days pass and you, Dr. Yu, come up with nothing, just like them..."

"Then you don’t live up to your reputation. You’re nothing special."

Yu Zhiming chuckled softly.

’This Qin Yuan is interesting,’ he thought. ’He’s even using reverse psychology.’

Setting aside everything else, Yu Zhiming had to admire the man’s attitude and mental state in the face of cancer.

After learning there was no hope for a cure, Qin Yuan didn’t fall into despair or depression. Instead, while his body still allowed, he hurried to enjoy life and satisfy his culinary desires.

While it smacked of giving up and just eating whatever he wanted, it was also another way of facing life with a positive attitude.

Yu Zhiming smiled faintly. "Mr. Qin, I can only say that I will do my best and try not to disappoint you..."

Five or six minutes later, Qin Yuan was carefully lifted onto the examination bed, and Yu Zhiming began to gently tap and press on his body...

But after just a moment, Yu Zhiming’s brow furrowed.

It wasn’t that he hadn’t found anything; it was that he had found too much.

The lymphoma had already invaded Qin Yuan’s lungs, stomach, intestinal system, mediastinum, and peritoneum.

Combined with Qin Yuan’s pre-existing heart and liver problems, Yu Zhiming was momentarily at a loss as to where to even begin searching for the source of his chest pain...
