Chapter 181: Chapter 180: Under Someone Else’s Roof

Monday arrived in the blink of an eye, and Yu Zhiming once again spent it in a relentless flurry of examinations, examinations, and more examinations.

He did have quite a few results to show for his day.

In the outpatient clinic, Yu Zhiming diagnosed one case of throat cancer and one of breast cancer.

Unfortunately, the cancer symptoms exhibited by both patients were already quite obvious.

He was certain the final diagnoses would be either early-stage or mid-stage.

During the rapid screening examinations in the evening, Yu Zhiming detected one case of suspected stomach cancer and another of suspected liver cancer.

After finishing a long day’s work, Yu Zhiming dragged his weary body and mind back to the main office, ready to head home.

He was surprised to find the dean’s secretary, He Yingjun, waiting for him.

"Chief Secretary He, what can I do for you?"

He Yingjun chuckled and said, "Dr. Yu, I wouldn’t dare use the word ’order.’ I have something I need to discuss with you."

"It’s just a discussion. Whether you agree or not, the decision is yours!"

Yu Zhiming rolled his eyes and chuckled. "A matter that has the dean’s chief secretary waiting for me personally... and I still have a choice?"

"Can I decide to stop you from saying it?"

He Yingjun said with great solemnity, "That won’t do. Not telling you would be a dereliction of my duty."

"I’m not exactly indispensable at this hospital. My humble self can’t bear such a heavy responsibility."

He then put on a pitiful expression. "Dr. Yu, we’re friends, more or less, aren’t we?"

"You have to sympathize with my difficult position, right?"

Yu Zhiming smiled. "Then just hurry up and say it."

He Yingjun smiled. "Dr. Yu, it’s like this..."

"As your fame has spread, more and more people have been coming to the hospital leadership, drawn by your reputation, hoping to get a personal examination from you."

"These people, you see, have some influence and connections."

He Yingjun winked at Yu Zhiming. "I’m sure you understand this kind of thing, Dr. Yu."

"Favors and connections—they’re everywhere."

"Also, with the end of the year and the Spring Festival only three or four months away, the hospital leadership is hoping to see some better-looking donation figures from businesses and individuals."

Yu Zhiming frowned, asking unhappily, "Are the hospital leaders suggesting I make house calls to examine these people one by one?"

"How could that be!"

He Yingjun put on a righteous and awe-inspiring expression. "Dr. Yu, you are a famous doctor. How could the leaders ask you to do something so beneath your dignity?"

"Besides, they’re the ones asking us for a favor—or to be precise, asking you for a favor."

"What the hospital leadership means is, could you possibly free up some time to have them come here for an examination?"

After a pause, He Yingjun tried to persuade him further. "Dr. Yu, once you’ve given these people physicals, you’ll have gotten to know them. That becomes part of your personal network, right?"

Yu Zhiming scoffed lightly. "I wouldn’t hold my breath for such a good outcome. Those people are all incredibly arrogant."

’I see how it is,’ Yu Zhiming thought.

’Since He Yingjun came to me with this, the hospital leaders must have already reached a consensus.’

’They call it a ’discussion,’ but that’s just a pleasantry to save me some face.’

’Sigh. Beggars can’t be choosers.’

’On the other hand, looking on the bright side, maybe I can really use this special VIP examination service to land a few projects for that kid, Xiaobo.’

At that thought, his mood instantly improved.

Yu Zhiming mulled it over for a moment, then said, "Alright, how about this: from Tuesday to Thursday, I can spare half an hour at most each day for these VIP examinations. I’ll see one family at a time, max."

He Yingjun beamed. "Dr. Yu, thank you for your understanding and enthusiastic support."

"Dr. Yu, rest assured, I will be sure to report to the leadership just how hard you work and the difficulties you face every day."

Yu Zhiming couldn’t help but chuckle, playing along with a smile. "Well then, thank you in advance for putting in a good word for me."

He suddenly remembered something and added, "The Wei Family?"

He Yingjun nodded. "Dr. Yu, I understand. I won’t schedule them."

With that, Yu Zhiming left the specific communication and coordination for this matter to Qiao Lei and He Yingjun...

Sometime after seven in the evening, Yu Zhiming returned to his residence at Zijin Garden to find that his sister had prepared a table laden with food.

There was chicken, duck, fish, and meat—ten dishes and two soups in total. It was clear that Yu Xiangwan had put in a great deal of thought and effort.

"Sis, what a spread! This is a rare sight. Did you finally find a boyfriend and you’re bringing him over for my approval?"

Yu Xiangwan shot him a look and explained, "This is to celebrate a major step forward in my grand money-making plan. Now it’s just a matter of putting it to the test."

"Sis, you found the apartments already?" Yu Zhiming asked.

Yu Xiangwan hummed in affirmation and said enthusiastically, "I rented six apartments from Dean Gu, and I rented another three near Huashan Hospital."

"I’m going to use these nine places to test the waters."

She giggled. "None of the nine apartments need any renovations. I just need to add some single beds, plus bedding and quilts."

"Oh, and Third Sister said they’re bringing seventy patients to Binhai this Friday."

Yu Zhiming asked with concern, "Fourth Sister, did Third Sister say how the county hospital plans to make money from these patients?"

Yu Xiangwan said slowly, "She did. They’re charging each patient a one-thousand-yuan intermediary service fee."

"The county hospital is responsible for transporting the patients and their accompanying family members to Binhai Huashan Hospital and Ning’an Hospital, and for ensuring that every patient receives proper treatment at both hospitals."

Seeing Yu Zhiming’s expression darken, Yu Xiangwan added, "Third Sister said that after the news got out, it wasn’t just patients from our county. Many from neighboring counties and even the city rushed to get in touch."

"Third Sister also said that the one-thousand-yuan fee isn’t considered expensive."

"She said many patients spend far more than that on treating people to meals, giving red envelopes, and buying gifts just to pull some strings."

Yu Zhiming hummed in acknowledgment and said with a slight smile, "I never said the fee was expensive."

Gu Qingning, who was sitting nearby, chimed in, "It’s worth it to spend a little more money for better medical treatment if it helps you recover better and faster."

"Sometimes, you can’t buy health, even with money."

Yu Xiangwan clapped her hands firmly and exclaimed, "Let’s not talk about this anymore! You two, hurry up and taste my cooking."

"Let me tell you, this is the fruit of my labor for the entire afternoon. I even burned my hand and got a few blisters. So let’s get this straight: you’re only allowed to point out the good things. Keep any criticisms to yourselves..."

Given Yu Xiangwan’s prior warning, Yu Zhiming and Gu Qingning silently finished their dinner...

Around ten o’clock that night, Yu Zhiming received a call from Teacher Qi.

"Zhiming, some colleagues from the Capital City have invited us for a consultation, and they specifically requested you be there."

Yu Zhiming asked for confirmation, "Teacher, has the child’s chimerism been confirmed?"

"How could it be that fast? The DNA confirmation results won’t be out for another day or two."

Qi Yue’s voice was lively over the phone. "But you don’t always have to wait for the results to be sure about things."

"We’re all medical professionals. We know what’s what. Our diagnosis won’t be wrong."

He added with a laugh, "The child’s father also contacted me tonight. He said that after two days of targeted treatment, the child is doing much better. The most obvious improvement is that he can eat more."

Yu Zhiming also smiled. "That is indeed good news."

"Oh, Teacher, about that consultation in the Capital City... I’m scheduled for work these next few days. I don’t think I can get away."

Qi Yue chuckled. "I told them as much. They said they’ll see if they can arrange for the patient to make a trip to Binhai."
