Superior Physician
Chapter 162: Feeling Good About Oneself
Chapter 162 -161: Feeling Good About Oneself
Yu Zhiming had rushed to the hospital’s emergency room this time, also because of a traffic accident.
However, this time there was only one severely injured patient, and this particular patient’s situation was a bit special.
She was a pregnant woman, seventeen weeks along.
The patient was unconscious with a head injury, as well as fractures and internal organ damage, which required a CT scan.
But since the patient was pregnant, a CT scan posed a radiation risk.
Left with no other choice, the emergency room staff called over Yu Zhiming, who was known as the “human CT scan.”
After Yu Zhiming performed a detailed examination of the still-unconscious pregnant woman, she was handed over to the on-duty associate chief physician in the ER to treat her injuries.
He walked out of the trauma room and was led to a quiet corner of the main hall by Head Nurse Zhan Qi.
“Dr. Yu, is the pregnant woman going to be okay?”
Yu Zhiming nodded. “Yes,” he said. “She has a hairline fracture in her skull, but there are no signs of intracranial bleeding.”
“She has two broken ribs and a fractured left forearm. There’s some minor internal bleeding in her organs, but not enough to require surgery.”
“As for the fetus, I don’t think there are any major issues, but she’ll still need further observation.”
Seeing Zhan Qi let out a huge sigh of relief, Yu Zhiming joked, “It’s a good thing Huashan Hospital has me now, huh?”
“Hey, Sister Zhan, what would you guys have done in a situation like this before I came along?”
Zhan Qi replied indignantly, “What else could we do?”
“Naturally, we’d prioritize the mother’s safety and do the CT scan. Of course, we’d shield the patient’s abdomen with a lead plate to minimize radiation exposure as much as possible.”
“But this time…”
Zhan Qi subtly gestured toward a young man pacing back and forth outside the trauma room, her voice laced with contempt. “He’s the woman’s husband. He absolutely refused to let us perform a CT scan, no matter how we tried to persuade him.”
Yu Zhiming was stunned for a moment. He glanced at the man a few times and asked, “People like that still exist?”
Zhan Qi snorted. “Dr. Yu, I’ve been working in the ER for fifteen years. I’ve seen more bizarre people than I can count, and the number of absolute gems is endless.”
She sighed softly. “The woman is unconscious, and as her husband, he’s her legal guardian.”
“We told him the woman’s life could be in danger, but he was adamant about not doing a CT scan. We really didn’t dare to proceed without his consent.”
“If the baby was born with any problems, he would definitely blame the hospital, and we’d be held responsible.”
Zhan Qi then said apologetically, “Dr. Yu, I was just so worried about the woman’s safety that I had to call you.”
“Dr. Yu, I’m sorry for interrupting your rest again.”
Yu Zhiming smiled. “Sister Zhan, there’s no need to apologize. You were thinking of the patient. How could that be wrong?”
He clicked his tongue. “I just wonder if that pregnant woman knows what kind of man her husband is.”
Zhan Qi huffed. “I secretly recorded a part of the conversation between the doctor and her husband.”
“When she wakes up, I’ll find a chance to casually let her know what happened.”
“If it turns out to be a case of Zhou Yu beating Huang Gai—one willing to dish it out and the other willing to take it—then I’ll just consider it me worrying for nothing.”
Zhan Qi stared at the husband, saying hatefully, “People like him are worse than scumbags. He deserves to be single for life.”
She added, fuming at the injustice, “The only reason scumbags can get away with being scumbags, besides being inherently vile, is because there’s never a shortage of women for them. You could even say many of those women bring it on themselves.”
“Don’t you agree, Dr. Yu?”
Yu Zhiming felt it was best not to get involved in this particular topic.
Fortunately, someone came over and saved him just then.
A young nurse, Wang Li, walked over with a wronged expression on her face.
“Sister Zhan, I was trying to give an IV to a chubby little kid. Not only is he overweight, but his veins are also really thin. I missed twice.”
“His family chewed me out and are threatening to file a complaint.”
Zhan Qi had no choice but to go deal with this minor dispute…
At Nurse Chief Zhan’s insistence, Yu Zhiming finished the deluxe takeout meal she had ordered for him before leaving the ER.
He had just stepped out of the first-floor lobby when he was nearly run into. Luckily, he was agile and dodged quickly enough.
A young man carrying a girl on his back brushed past Yu Zhiming and rushed into the ER like a gust of wind.
“Doctor! Doctor! Hurry, over here! Help!”
Following the young man’s cry, a doctor and a nurse immediately hurried over.
Yu Zhiming, who had turned back, was among them.
The young man set the girl down and held up her right hand.
A towel was wrapped around the girl’s right wrist.
The doctor unwrapped the towel.
Yu Zhiming leaned in for a look. Whoa, what a sight. There were more than a dozen shallow cuts on her wrist.
It looked like she couldn’t bring herself to cut deep—probably afraid of the pain—so each slash had only broken the skin.
Yu Zhiming couldn’t help but mutter to himself, ‘This knife wasn’t very sharp!’
The young man, however, asked anxiously, his face tense, “Doctor, how is she? Is it serious? Is she in danger?”
The doctor, keeping a straight face, couldn’t resist quipping, “Good thing you got here so quickly. Any later and the wounds would have healed on their own.”
“Nurse Xiao Cai, please treat the wounds on her wrist.”
Hearing this, the young man visibly relaxed, but in the next moment, his body went limp, and he started to collapse.
The doctor, with quick reflexes, caught him.
Yu Zhiming noticed the young man’s face was deathly pale, his eyes unfocused, his lips trembling, and sweat was pouring down his face like a torrential downpour…
He placed a hand on the young man’s chest…
The heart was pounding fast and loud, as if it were about to leap out of his chest at any second…
A moment later, Yu Zhiming looked at the doctor supporting the young man and gave his diagnosis.
“It’s nothing serious. He just ran too fast and too hard. He’s exhausted and suffering from hypoxia…”
Around two in the afternoon, Yu Zhiming returned to his apartment in the Zijin Garden District. He found the TV still on and that Fu Xiaoxue girl sprawled out on the sofa, sound asleep.
Yu Zhiming turned off the TV and covered Fu Xiaoxue with a light blanket to keep her from catching a cold from the air conditioning…
Around nine in the evening, Gu Qingning came home.
Gu Qingning told Yu Zhiming that she had confirmed with her cousin: the “Debutante Night” was set for next Sunday.
Gu Qingning also bragged that she had managed to negotiate some better terms for Yu Zhiming.
The 10,000 yuan appearance fee would only cover thirty people for a physical examination.
Beyond that number, the fee would increase by three hundred yuan for each additional person examined.
Around ten at night, Yu Xiangwan returned.
Yu Zhiming could tell his sister was in a bad mood and asked with concern, “Sis, what’s wrong?”
Yu Xiangwan said indignantly, “Fifth Brother, Qingning, I’ve always heard that the locals in Binhai look down on outsiders and are really exclusive.”
“Well, today I saw it firsthand!”
“Those guys know nothing but eating, drinking, and having fun. They have no real skills. They just act all high and mighty because they were lucky enough to be born into families that got a few apartments from demolition compensation.”
Yu Zhiming understood at once that his sister was indignant because he hadn’t been well-received.
He was about to say a few words of comfort when his Fourth Sister continued, “Fifth Brother, you have no idea. Those women… some were fat, some were short, some were ugly, and with your looks and qualifications, they actually had the nerve to look down on you.”
“They said being a doctor is tiring, doesn’t pay much, and most importantly, that you wouldn’t have time to have fun with them.”
“They said if you, Fifth Brother, quit your job as a doctor and found a high-paying job with less work and more vacation, then they might consider you.”
Yu Zhiming rolled his eyes. “Sis, you’re just making that up, aren’t you?”
“With my physique and looks, I’m qualified enough to be a model or an actor. How could they possibly look down on me?”
Gu Qingning covered her mouth, smiling without a word.
Yu Xiangwan shot Yu Zhiming a look and crushed his ego, “Fifth Brother, stop being so conceited. I’m really not lying. That’s exactly what those women said.”
Yu Zhiming didn’t believe it for a second. “They probably felt inadequate and knew they weren’t good enough for me. They only said that out of feminine vanity.”
“Fifth Brother, you’re as full of yourself as ever.”
Yu Xiangwan teased him, then said with a serious expression, “Their dislike for you was genuine. I could feel it.”
“If you don’t believe me, ask Zhou Mo tomorrow.”
Speaking of Zhou Mo, Yu Xiangwan added mysteriously, “Fifth Brother, I know why Zhou Mo doesn’t have a boyfriend.”
“Why?”
“Those friends of Zhou Mo said that her father, who is abroad, has already arranged everything for her. He’s even arranged a boyfriend for her.”
“They said that in another year or two, she’s supposed to go abroad to inherit the family business and, well, get married…”
