Chapter 115: Chapter 114: Do Not Offend Women

After a fairly hearty dinner, Yu Zhiming was "coerced" into going to the obstetrics and gynecology department, where he was busy for nearly three more hours.

Besides adjusting fetal positions, Yu Zhiming also made a new discovery in one of the fetuses.

While adjusting this fetus’s position, Yu Zhiming noticed that it always had its mouth open.

Upon closer inspection, he realized it wasn’t that the fetus didn’t want to close its mouth, but that it simply couldn’t.

To his surprise, there was a lump the size of a quail egg inside the fetus’s mouth.

Currently, the clearest technological method for examining a fetus in utero is the 4D color ultrasound.

This technology can typically only detect developmental deformities in the fetus’s limbs and external appearance; conditions inside the mouth, however, are still undetectable.

After receiving the report of Yu Zhiming’s new discovery, Director Liu Yun noted that the fetus’s heart rate and other vitals were all normal, and the birth was expected within a day or two anyway.

She decided to wait until after the natural delivery to study the lump in its mouth and determine a treatment plan...

After ten o’clock at night, Yu Zhiming reached the main lobby of the gynecology building and discovered it was raining outside.

And it wasn’t a light rain, either. It was pouring.

Just as he was worrying about it, he heard Ding Ye’s voice.

"I’ll give you a ride!"

"Is it on your way?"

"Zijin Garden District? It’s just a small detour for me. Besides, we have a responsibility to get you home safely."

"Dr. Yu, just wait here for a moment!"

As she spoke, Ding Ye dashed out into the rain, running toward the parking area not far from the front of the building.

A moment later, a small electric Smart car drove up, executed an exceptionally nimble fishtail, and came to a steady stop in front of the building.

’Her driving’s not bad. Should be a safe ride.’

Yu Zhiming mentally appraised, then nimbly got into the passenger seat...

After the car left the hospital, Yu Zhiming felt it would be awkward to remain silent, so he looked for a topic of conversation.

"Dr. Ding, thank you for warning me about Qiu Yi. I found out that he and I actually have quite a bit of shared history."

"Dr. Yu, no need to thank me!"

Ding Ye said with a frank expression, "I had my own selfish reasons, too."

"After all this time, someone like you, Dr. Yu, has finally shown up—someone who can put that guy in his place and watch him squirm. I didn’t want to see you fall into one of his traps unprepared."

"Do you two have a grudge?" Yu Zhiming asked, his curiosity piqued.

Ding Ye turned the steering wheel and continued, "No major feud, just some minor personal conflicts."

She elaborated, "Back then, as a rising star and a leading figure among the youth, he had a lot of people gathered around him."

"And, well, I was one of them, I suppose."

"At an event, I happened to overhear some guy asking him to help set him up with me."

"Qiu Yi agreed without a second thought..."

It seemed that incident had truly infuriated Ding Ye; even bringing it up again now, she was still grinding her teeth.

"Dr. Yu, you have no idea what that guy said back then, or the tone and expression he had when he said it..."

"It was as if he were a monarch, and I was just one of his possessions, a prize to be bestowed upon a loyal subordinate."

Ding Ye’s voice turned cold as she said, "I’m going to make him understand: don’t cross a woman, especially a petty one."

A chill ran down Yu Zhiming’s spine. He quickly said, "Dr. Ding, if I ever accidentally offend you in the future, you have to let me know so I can apologize and make it up to you."

"I really don’t want to end up on your bad side."

Ding Ye turned to Yu Zhiming with a bright smile and said, "Dr. Yu, you don’t have to worry about that at all."

"I’ve realized you’re very different from him. You’re upright and kind-hearted, and not ruthlessly ambitious."

"If a conflict really did happen between us, it would most likely be my fault, or at worst, an unintentional mistake on your part."

After a brief pause, Ding Ye changed the subject. "That Cai Haowen, the one who was persuaded to resign—I heard a rumor that he’s already found a new place. The Worker’s Hospital."

She added, "It’s also a Grade A Tertiary hospital, but among the forty or fifty such hospitals in Binhai, it’s one of the worst."

"With Cai Haowen’s skills, he shouldn’t have ended up at such a bad hospital. Maybe he’s just looking for a temporary foothold and plans to come back?"

Yu Zhiming scoffed lightly. "If that’s really his plan, then he’s seriously miscalculated."

"As long as I’m at Huashan, he can never come back. I can’t say for longer, but for the next ten years, unless I leave of my own accord, no one can force me out."

Ding Ye looked at him with admiration. "Exactly, Dr. Yu! You should be more assertive and imposing."

"As a leading figure of the younger generation, how can you not have a bit of an edge?"

"That Cai Haowen guy needs to be taught a harsh lesson."

Ding Ye added excitedly, "And when that Qiu Yi fellow comes back, he’ll never get the same kind of treatment he used to, where everyone came running at his beck and call."

"Because you, who are even more outstanding than him, have appeared."

"A lot of people will be watching from the sidelines to see who comes out on top in the end—him or you, Dr. Yu."

"Dr. Yu, my money’s on you."

"For a doctor, medical skill is what matters most. Seniority and connections are just external factors. They’re superficial."

Yu Zhiming gave a small smile. "Dr. Ding, you might not believe me, but I have no desire to compete. I just want to quietly improve my medical skills and save lives."

Ding Ye shot Yu Zhiming a look that said, "You’re so naive."

"Dr. Yu, the tree may want to be still, but the wind won’t stop blowing. This isn’t about what you want. Once you’re in this world, you can’t always control your own fate."

Seeing that Yu Zhiming really didn’t want to discuss this, Ding Ye quickly changed the topic.

"Dr. Yu, I just remembered something. I was wondering if you could do me a favor..."

Before Yu Zhiming could even ask, Ding Ye continued, "I have a younger cousin who’s almost seventeen."

"He’s very smart, just small and skinny. He’s barely four-foot-eleven. My aunt’s husband is about five-foot-nine, and my aunt is five-four."

"My cousin also has a younger sister who just turned thirteen, and she’s already five-foot-three."

"Over the past few years, my cousin has had quite a few growth hormone shots and gone to the hospital for check-ups, but they haven’t found anything wrong with him."

"He’s almost seventeen, his growth spurt period is almost over, and he’s still only four-foot-eleven. My aunt and her family are worried sick."

Yu Zhiming said hesitantly, "Dr. Ding, issues with height are mostly related to genetics and the endocrine system. That’s not really my specialty."

Ding Ye shot him a sideways glance. "Dr. Yu, of course I know it’s not your specialty."

"What I was thinking was, could you ask Director Qi to take a look? To see if there’s some kind of physical reason why he’s not growing taller."

A look of understanding dawned on Yu Zhiming. He let out a soft "Oh," and said, "Okay, I’ll mention it to Teacher Qi. But I can’t guarantee whether he’ll take the case or not."

He then added, feigning a joking tone, "Have they done a paternity test? Maybe there was an issue at the source of production, huh?"

Ding Ye shook her head. "Not that I know of. I’ll seriously suggest they get one done."

"It’s not like babies have never been switched at the hospital before."

She suddenly lowered her voice and said conspiratorially, "Dr. Yu, let me tell you, something like that actually happened right here in our OB/GYN department."

"For real. I’m not kidding."

"Last year, a family showed up."

"The ’child’ was already in his twenties."

"I heard that as soon as they looked into it, it was clear our hospital was at fault. But since it had been over twenty years, it was hard to pin the blame on any specific person."

"They say the hospital ended up paying a lot of money to send the family on their way and keep the whole thing from going public."

Ding Ye added resentfully, "Our year-end bonuses last year were at least a third less than usual, and the rumor is, it was all because of that incident."

"I just can’t believe it!"

"Using our money to pay for a mistake from over twenty years ago... I don’t know what those hospital leaders were thinking..."
