Superior Physician
Chapter 114 - 113: The Frank Assistant
Chapter 114: Chapter 113: The Frank Assistant
Friday’s employee health checkups at Huashan Hospital officially began at 8:30 in the morning.
Yu Zhiming, who had come to the hospital early on purpose, didn’t see the long lines from last time.
The main reason was that the president’s secretary, He Yingjun, had made adjustments in response to the poor preparation for the last round of checkups.
He had notified a total of one hundred and twenty people in advance and assigned each person a specific time slot for their checkup.
This effectively prevented long lines and also slightly improved Yu Zhiming’s examination efficiency.
At five minutes to six in the evening, Yu Zhiming successfully wrapped up his full day of checkups.
The good news was that he hadn’t found any suspected cancer cases today.
But he had made plenty of other discoveries.
For instance, he diagnosed nine new patients with cardiovascular disease and discovered new problems with the internal organs, both major and minor, in over a dozen others.
The most interesting discovery was a forty-six-year-old woman who, Yu Zhiming found, was pregnant.
When Yu Zhiming told the woman the results, she was completely stunned and bewildered.
Her husband, however, was overjoyed.
The moment he stepped out of the examination room, he started shouting that his wife was pregnant and that she’d be doing her postpartum confinement at the same time as their daughter.
That’s when Yu Zhiming learned that the woman’s daughter had gotten married this year and had also just found out she was pregnant less than two months ago.
The thought of mother and daughter doing their postpartum confinement at nearly the same time in the near future was pretty amusing.
Today, Yu Zhiming also noticed something worrisome.
He had caught Zhou Mo sneaking glances at him more than once.
When their eyes occasionally met, Zhou Mo would hastily look away, pretending to be interested in something else.
This couldn’t help but make Yu Zhiming’s mind race.
’Don’t tell me Zhou Mo has a crush on me, does she?’
’Did yesterday’s rescue-from-a-confession become the catalyst for her budding feelings? Did it make her suddenly realize how outstanding I am?’
The thought made Yu Zhiming incredibly worried.
’I can’t be fighting with my teacher over a woman!’
Yu Zhiming secretly decided to be a little colder and keep his distance from Zhou Mo from now on, to avoid giving her the wrong idea.
’Sigh, being this outstanding is such a burden...’
Feeling quite pleased with himself, Yu Zhiming was also completely exasperated by another event that had occurred today.
Yao Chengyun, the patient with ricin poisoning, was discharged today.
She wasn’t going home, but was instead being transferred to a community hospital near her house for further recuperation.
After half a month of treatment at Huashan Hospital, Yao Chengyun’s life was no longer in danger, but the damage to her internal organs had not yet properly healed.
Teacher Qi’s assessment was that she would need at least another six months to a year of recuperation to regain basic health.
Even if Yao Chengyun made the best possible recovery in the future, she would never be as healthy as she was before.
The ricin toxin was too aggressive; it had ultimately left her with permanent physical damage...
What left Yu Zhiming speechless, and even angry, was that Yao Chengyun had decided to keep the fetus.
She kept saying the child was innocent.
She also said that the man was already dead, and this was the only piece of him left, so she couldn’t bear to get rid of it.
This was despite Qi Yue and OB/GYN specialists telling her multiple times that due to the effects of the toxin and the treatment drugs, there was an extremely high probability the fetus would have developmental defects or deformities.
The chances of a stillbirth or miscarriage were also very high.
If that were to happen, it would cause considerable damage to Yao Chengyun’s body.
But Yao Chengyun seemed to have become completely fixated; she wouldn’t listen to anyone and insisted on keeping the fetus.
Yu Zhiming was so angry he wanted to crack open her head and see just how her brain was wired...
Seeing Yu Zhiming so worked up, Qi Yue couldn’t help but chuckle. "Kind words can’t persuade a damned soul, and mercy can’t save a person set on self-destruction. We can only offer advice; we can’t make decisions for others."
"If she wants to court disaster, all we can do is let her."
"Besides, we can’t deny there’s still a chance, however small, that she could give birth to a lively, healthy child."
Yu Zhiming couldn’t even be bothered to argue with his teacher.
Just then, a knock sounded at the door.
After Qi Yue’s "Come in," a tall, sturdy young man with thick eyebrows and large eyes walked into the director’s office.
The young man, dressed in a shirt and tie, immediately bowed and offered his greetings the moment he entered.
"Director Qi, hello!"
"Dr. Yu, hello!"
Yu Zhiming sized up the man, who was even more imposing than himself—a typical man from the Lu Region.
Although his features were plain, he looked approachable and gave off an impression of being honest and reliable.
This young man was named Qiao Lei, and he was here specifically to go through the formalities of an interview for Yu Zhiming’s work assistant position.
After Yu Zhiming had selected this guy from three resumes, Qi Yue had made it clear.
This fellow was the son of a relative from his hometown.
As for the other two resumes, they had been passed along by people in the hospital who had heard the news and were optimistic about Yu Zhiming’s future.
Qi Yue also told Yu Zhiming that after Qiao Lei graduated from university, he had followed his family’s instructions and come to Binhai to find him.
However, at the time, Qiao Lei had said he didn’t need Qi Yue’s help yet; he wanted to see if he could survive in Binhai and make something of himself on his own.
And so, Qiao Lei found a job in medical device sales on his own and had been working there ever since...
Yu Zhiming asked directly, "Qiao Lei, you also graduated with a degree in clinical medicine. Why didn’t you choose to become a doctor back then?"
Qiao Lei answered honestly, "With my qualifications and background, if I became a doctor, I could only work in county or township hospitals."
"Back then, I longed for the big city. I was young and ambitious and didn’t want to be stuck in a small town my whole life like my parents, so I came to Binhai and got a job in sales."
He paused for a moment before continuing, "Working for the past two years has made me realize a lot."
"Nowadays, if you want to get ahead and be successful, it’s incredibly difficult to rely on hard work and diligence alone."
"The easier paths are to either have unparalleled skills, like you, Dr. Yu, or to have a combination of resources like capital and connections."
Qiao Lei glanced at Qi Yue, then turned his gaze back to Yu Zhiming and continued, "Director Qi called and told me that as long as I follow you, Dr. Yu, and do my work diligently and honestly, all my previous extravagant hopes and dreams can come true."
"Director Qi also said this might be the only chance I get in my entire life to become successful."
"And I believe what Director Qi says!"
"So, I came."
After hearing all this, Yu Zhiming was momentarily at a loss for how to respond or what to make of it.
After a moment of silence, he finally said, "Qiao Lei, you’re quite frank and bold, putting everything out on the table like that."
"That’s all for today’s interview. You can go back for now and wait for our follow-up notice."
Hearing this, Qiao Lei straightened his posture.
He earnestly bowed to Yu Zhiming and Qi Yue, then excused himself and left the director’s office.
"That little brat..."
Qi Yue looked embarrassed and said angrily, "Zhiming, let’s pick someone else. That kid has no idea what his place is."
Yu Zhiming chuckled. "I actually think he’s pretty good!"
"If he had spouted a bunch of nonsense about my amazing medical skills and his desire to serve the public by wholeheartedly managing my work, I’d have had a harder time believing him."
"You’ve also said it yourself, Teacher: desire is the source of motivation that pushes people to improve."
"Now, he’s laid his desires out in the open. It’s a clear price tag, and it just comes down to whether or not I can meet it."
"Teacher, can I really bring him the success he wants?"
Qi Yue’s expression turned serious as he said gravely, "Zhiming, you can not only bring him success, but you’ll also bring about many significant changes for me, your teacher, for Huashan Hospital, and for many other people."
"Zhiming, never underestimate yourself. You’re even more capable than you imagine..."
Just then, voices could be heard from the large office next door.
A moment later, Zhou Mo and Ding Ye from the OB/GYN department knocked and entered.
"Good afternoon, Director Qi!"
Ding Ye first greeted Qi Yue, then turned to Yu Zhiming and said, "Dr. Yu, I’m here under Director Liu’s orders with a lavish takeout dinner for you."
"After you finish dinner, I need to take you to the OB/GYN department. A number of pregnant women are waiting for your magic touch to adjust their babies’ positions."
Yu Zhiming couldn’t help but roll his eyes.
’Damn it, that Director Liu Yun just loves to strong-arm people. Doesn’t she have any class...?’

Thank you to "Reader20201019104679808" for the donation.
The subscription numbers are good, but the donation numbers are abysmal. It’s been two days since the novel went pay-to-read, and I’ve only just gotten my first donation from a reader.
I’m not hoping for large donations. There’s a type of donation for 2 Qidian coins that I can’t seem to do on my Android phone. Is that something you can only do on an Apple device?
To any readers who can do it, could you help me pad the donation stats a bit? It doesn’t need to be much. Just a few donations of 2 Qidian coins each—five or six times would make me very happy.
