Superior Physician
Chapter 111 - 110: The Possible Mastermind
Chapter 111: Chapter 110: The Possible Mastermind
Yu Zhiming had a full and busy Thursday.
First, he joined Teacher Qi for his rounds. Then, he acted as surgical assistant to Chief Physician Han Shuo, performing an anterior cervical internal fixation on that gamer.
In the afternoon, Yu Zhiming received more specimens from the general surgery department: the left kidney of a kidney cancer patient and a large section of colon from a colon cancer patient.
They were all very fresh.
This was the difference between a major hospital and a county hospital. Since coming to Huashan Hospital, Yu Zhiming had no shortage of pathological organs to study and dissect.
At five in the afternoon, while Yu Zhiming was in the lab, lost in the joy of his studies, a startled Zhou Mo called out to him, her voice trembling as she covered her eyes.
She said someone was looking for him...
Seeing that it was Wei Hao, whom he had only met the night before, Yu Zhiming asked, annoyed, "What is it now?"
"I’m busy."
Wei Hao smiled. "Those three have confessed. Dr. Yu, you were instrumental in this, so I felt it was necessary to update you."
Yu Zhiming was taken aback for a moment. "Did you find other key evidence?" he asked curiously.
Wei Hao said in a low voice, "We used a little trick."
"We recreated the scene based on your detailed description of the movements. We found three people with similar builds, filmed them on location, and then had an expert edit the footage."
"Then we passed it off as a video accidentally captured by a drone enthusiast, showing them causing the accident."
"With their guilty consciences, as soon as they saw the video perfectly matched what they’d done, they broke down and confessed everything."
Yu Zhiming let out an "Oh." He then asked bluntly, "Does that count as coercing a confession? Do the regulations allow for that?"
"It’s an interrogation technique!"
Wei Hao replied with a serious expression, "The most important thing is that we didn’t frame an innocent person."
After a brief pause, he added, "Dr. Yu, your efforts last night won’t be uncompensated. I’m going to apply for a reward bonus for you from my superiors."
Yu Zhiming waved it off, saying with great conviction, "Don’t worry about a bonus."
"I’m just glad I could do something to help get justice for the victims who were killed and injured in the accident."
Yu Zhiming sighed. "One stupid, malicious act... and it cost dozens of lives and injuries."
"That’s just too heavy a price to pay."
Wei Hao fell silent for a moment, then sighed. "Yes, it is. An incredibly heavy price."
"And as the perpetrators, those three will pay a heavy price for their actions."
Wei Hao also made a point to tell Yu Zhiming that regarding the incident where he was nearly framed for molestation, Jin Feng was still looking for leads and that they would inform him the moment they found anything new.
Yu Zhiming thanked him...
Long after his shift had ended, Yu Zhiming was still busy in the lab when he suddenly realized someone was standing beside him.
He looked up and saw it was Teacher Qi.
Qi Yue looked at the operating table and found the sight of the organs, which the young man had cut into bits and pieces, rather hard to stomach.
’This isn’t the standard procedure for anatomical study at all.’
’No wonder Zhou Mo had subtly hinted that Yu Zhiming might have some... psychopathic tendencies.’
"Zhiming, do you have to be so gory? Aren’t you afraid people will think you’re a madman, a butcher, a pervert?"
Yu Zhiming chuckled, explaining himself. "Teacher, even though these organs are all from late-stage cancer patients, they can be roughly divided into three categories."
"The tumor itself, tissue infiltrated by the tumor, and the relatively healthy organ tissue."
"By separating them so meticulously, I can work backward, in a sense. It’s like I’m getting to see the pathological and structural characteristics of the organ at every single stage of the tumor’s development."
"For instance, I can treat the relatively healthy tissue as a pathological specimen from a healthy organ in the initial stages of carcinogenesis."
Qi Yue nodded in approval, but then he saw Yu Zhiming pick up a slice of organ tissue and begin to caress it in his gloved hand.
The gentle way he did it, combined with the look of enjoyment on his face... Qi Yue felt as if the young man were caressing a beloved partner.
Qi Yue couldn’t help but shudder.
Frankly, Yu Zhiming’s expression and his behavior were genuinely starting to frighten Qi Yue.
"Zhiming, what are you...?"
"Stroking it. Getting a feel for it!"
Yu Zhiming looked completely at ease, seeing nothing wrong with his actions. "Teacher," he explained softly, "during the years I couldn’t see, I relied on my hands to perceive the shape and fine details of everything."
"When I use auscultation and percussion to examine a patient’s organs, I get a sensation... as if I’m touching them with my own hands."
"I later discovered that the more I learn about an organ, the more I handle it, the more accurate my auscultation and percussion results become."
Realization dawned on Qi Yue.
The phenomenon the young man was describing was called synesthesia, or sensory substitution. It refers to the merging of senses—where sight, touch, smell, and hearing can communicate and overlap without clear boundaries.
It’s a physiological and psychological phenomenon that all humans share to some degree.
Because Yu Zhiming was once blind, his synesthesia was exceptionally strong, causing his most acute senses—hearing and touch—to blend together almost seamlessly.
’Still, the way the kid acts...’
’Plenty of doctors have their quirks,’ he thought, ’but I should have a psychologist give him an evaluation, followed by a few counseling sessions.’
Having made his decision, Qi Yue warned him, "Zhiming, your dissection methods are a little unsettling. It’s best if you don’t do that in front of other people."
"Do you have any idea how much you scared Zhou Mo?"
Yu Zhiming gave a sheepish smile and promised, "Teacher, I’ll be more careful in the future."
Qi Yue grunted, then changed the subject. "You mentioned Qiu Yi the other day, and it reminded me of something."
"Qiu Yi’s mother is a shareholder and director at Yaoming Pharmaceutical."
Yu Zhiming’s expression froze. "Teacher, are you saying that what happened that night... was related to Qiu Yi?"
Qi Yue shook his head. "It’s hard to say. We don’t have any evidence."
"But if he was the one pulling the strings behind the scenes, it would make sense."
"He has the resources and the ability, and one could argue he has the motive."
"What’s important is that he’s extremely clever."
"The fact that you were left to suffer in silence while those people walked away scot-free... he’s capable of orchestrating something like that."
Qi Yue added, "Also, I had someone look into it. That fellow Cai Haowen, the one who’s been giving you a hard time, used to be one of Qiu Yi’s hangers-on."
"However, I suspect Cai Haowen is targeting you on his own initiative. Probably trying to make a good impression before Qiu Yi gets back."
Yu Zhiming blinked. "Looks like this Qiu Yi and I are just fated to be at odds. We haven’t even met, and we’re already enemies."
Qi Yue said with an air of authority, "Zhiming, you don’t need to worry about that guy one bit."
"He’s just coasting on the reputation and connections his grandfather left behind. When it comes to actual ability, he’s no match for you."
"If that guy dares to pull any crap on you, I’ll make sure he lives to regret it."
"Thank you for looking out for me, Teacher. I’ll be sure to work hard and make you proud," Yu Zhiming quickly pledged.
Qi Yue smiled, satisfied. "Someone from Yaoming Pharmaceutical contacted me," he said. "They want to treat us to dinner to ’resolve the misunderstanding.’"
"I turned them down flat."
"Right now, the hospital is making an example of them to assert its authority. It wouldn’t be right for us to meet with them privately."
Yu Zhiming nodded in understanding. "Teacher, if they come looking for me, I’ll ignore them too."
Just then, a knock sounded at the door, followed by the clear, pleasant sound of Zhou Mo’s distinctive voice.
"Director, Dr. Yu, Dr. Wang Yaxian, a gynecology specialist from Jiaoda Affiliated Hospital, is here to see you..."
