Super Soldier in the City
Chapter 2756 - 2818: Black-Clad Assassin
"I’m leaving now; wait for my notice next time." Li Yifei stayed for a while and decided to leave first.
"Brother Fei, wait for me; I’m almost done. I’ll bring my mom home and then see you off." Li Minjia’s excited voice came through.
"There’s no need to see me off; I’ll be downstairs in no time. You should take care of your mom first."
"No, please wait for me; I insist on seeing you off," Li Minjia insisted.
"Alright, take your time and wash up properly."
Ten minutes later, Li Minjia came out carrying her mother. Her mother had been ill for so long and was only just recovering from a major illness, so she might not even weigh eighty pounds. Li Minjia could carry her on her own. After settling her mother, Li Minjia came out with red eyes, looking at Li Yifei.
"Go change your clothes; they’re all wet," Li Yifei said.
"I... won’t change now, I’ll see you off first."
"Go ahead; a few more minutes won’t hurt. It’s cool outside, and you don’t want to catch a cold," Li Yifei stated.
Only then did Li Minjia return to her bedroom to change clothes. The house they lived in was tiny, and Li Minjia’s bedroom was probably just a few square meters, with only a single bed and a desk, very cramped. Over the years, the little girl likely didn’t have tutoring classes, but she did manage to score nearly six hundred points on the college entrance exam, which is considered a high score in Ning Province. Still, she chose not to go out of town because there were favorable policies at local schools.
When she came out after changing, Li Yifei nodded quietly. The little girl indeed had potential. Heaven still favored her, granting her an ordinary family with a somewhat turbulent childhood but also granting her potential. Thinking pessimistically, perhaps in this era, as long as you had a body and a face, you wouldn’t worry about food and drink. But, of course, that was somewhat overly pessimistic. Li Yifei was trying hard to steer her away from that path; otherwise, why would he have spent so much time talking today?
Silently, they descended the stairs, Li Yifei in front and Li Minjia trailing behind, feeling naturally reluctant. Just as they were about to reach the car, Li Minjia softly said, "We’ll meet again, right?"
"At least one more treatment, but the exact time is uncertain." Li Yifei replied.
"That’s good. I’m glad we can meet again."
"Just remember what I said; don’t let your emotions get the better of you just because I helped you out a little today. Take a step back and think if it’s worth it or not, alright?"
"It’s worth it. I’m very calm now, but I also understand that liking isn’t enough; mutual feelings are the best. Brother Fei, rest assured, I won’t be troubled by these emotions. Now that my mom is temporarily okay, I can fully focus on my studies. Furthermore, I won’t have to worry about money for the next few years. I have to earn more certificates and gather more resources to make big money soon," the little girl said confidently.
Li Yifei smiled and nodded, saying, "That’s right, keep up the momentum. You’re already better than many others, so why not become even better?"
Why not become even better! At that moment, Li Minjia felt a surge of pride filling her chest and nodded repeatedly, saying, "Rest assured, I will. I’ll do my best!"
"Alright, it’s getting late; you should rest early and take care of yourself!" Li Yifei opened the car door and waved.
Li Minjia loosened her grip, ultimately deciding not to speak, holding something she made herself. She intended to give it to Li Yifei as a memento but thought that in the future, when she was more capable, she’d give him something better.
"Brother Fei, is that your phone number?" Li Minjia asked when Li Yifei got in the car.
"Yes, but I often travel for work, so I might not always answer. If you’re in trouble, just send me a message!" Li Yifei said. He wasn’t lying; who knew when he’d have to go on a mission or head into the remote mountains? Those things were uncertain.
To Li Minjia’s ears, however, the message took on another meaning. She pressed her lips together and nodded, "Don’t worry, I won’t call, but during holidays, I’ll send my wishes!"
"Alright, by the way, here’s something for you—it’s a small jade pendant. It contains a bit of energy, and wearing it can help clear the mind and invigorate the spirit. Of course, its effects aren’t that miraculous, but it’s still nice!" Just as Li Yifei was about to drive away, he lowered the window and handed out a jade pendant.
Li Minjia took it joyfully, expressing her gratitude, and it was clear she liked it.
Li Yifei started the car and slowly drove away. Waving behind him, Li Minjia held the jade pendant tightly. She was genuinely grateful to the kind Brother Fei she had only known for a day, who had already helped her so much. She would forever cherish this in her heart. At that moment, she truly felt the warmth of humanity. If it hadn’t been for his help, Li Minjia might have faced selling herself for a little money, ultimately failing to cure her mom’s illness. Not long after, she could have descended into despair while her mother succumbed, leaving her alone and possibly even more depraved. Such probabilities were very high.
"You’re right; my fate has changed with your appearance—it’s even a turning point in my life. From now on, I’ll study harder and strive to improve myself, so I can change my family’s life and my destiny sooner," Li Minjia whispered.
What Li Yifei didn’t expect was that after spending several hours and some effort to help Li Minjia, she would indeed grow in the following years. By happenstance, she joined the Li family’s enterprise. Starting as a lowest-level employee, she gradually climbed to a junior manager, director, and even department manager, with an astonishingly rapid promotion rate. Within the Li family’s corporate grading system of fourteen levels, Li Minjia advanced from the lowest employee to the tenth level in just two short years, becoming a middle-level executive, close to senior leadership.
By then, she had figured out who had helped her initially and was even more moved, willing to repay Li Yifei by contributing to the Li family’s economic success. Her business acumen won the approval of Xu Yingying and others, who decided to nurture her talents further.
Of course, all of this is yet to come. Currently, Li Minjia remains the girl saved from the brink of despair, resolute in her journey towards the light. After college, there’s still graduate school, so everything remains uncertain.
Li Yifei did a good deed, and he felt happy about it, except for that kiss... He wasn’t a casanova, unable to win over every person he met. Besides, it wasn’t about love, just gratitude mixed with various emotions, so he couldn’t act on impulse, Li Yifei told himself, and he had to stick to this belief in the future. Otherwise, what would he become?
Driving back, Li Yifei played music in the car, softly humming along. Suddenly, a person dashed out on the road ahead. The sudden incident prompted Li Yifei to slam on the brakes. The person stumbled to the ground but wasn’t caught under the massive body of his car, Knight Fifteen. Otherwise, survival chances could have been slim.
The person who fell in front of the car quickly got up, too busy to curse at Li Yifei. Instead, they made a desperate dash in another direction. Li Yifei frowned, prepared to exit the car to investigate, when a sudden warning struck him. Out of nowhere, someone dressed in black dashed out of the darkness, emerging from the pitch-black woods. If not for Li Yifei’s quick reflexes, he might not have noticed. The intruder had concealed their presence.
Such stealth would go unnoticed even by ordinary people face-to-face. Naturally, Li Yifei couldn’t release his aura constantly, so he hadn’t noticed earlier. As the figure emerged, Li Yifei immediately turned his attention to them. Only their eyes were visible, eyes filled with murderous intent.
The figure flashed past, pursuing the person who had run away.
They were both cultivators! Li Yifei confirmed. Though this wasn’t a bustling area, many residential complexes surrounded it. It was already past midnight with barely anyone or any cars on the street—a chase of one by another. If Li Yifei encountered such a scenario, would he not want to explore further?
The next moment he reacted, unbuckling his seatbelt and slipping out of the car. The two had already disappeared into the darkness, seemingly lost. However, for Li Yifei, catching up was not difficult.
His figure flickered, catching up in a few seconds.
The person almost hit by Li Yifei crawled in a panic, wishing for extra legs to flee. Though not weak, their skills paled compared to the black-clad pursuer, whose greater strength it’s almost insurmountable. Within less than five moves, they got injured by the pursuer. If not for a subordinate sacrificing themselves to buy time for an escape, they might have been dead by now.
The pursuer was here to kill, not to scare, hence their frantic escape. Bursting into the woods, they stumbled on something and flew forward, rolling several times before coming to a stop. Despite the pain, they scrambled to run again, only to find their foot injured, the intense pain causing another fall.
It’s over! It’s all over today, they thought.
Behind them, the specter-like pursuer caught up. Seeing the predicament, they felt no hurry, slowing their steps to near silence, as if floating. In a hoarse, unpleasant voice, the pursuer taunted, "Run, go on, keep running."
"Who are you? Why are you here to kill me? I haven’t wronged you!"
The pursuer laughed, "Doesn’t wronging someone mean you can’t kill them? No worries; I just want you dead!"
"Why?"
"Stalling won’t help; you people all must die!" the pursuer declared, shaking their hand. A cold glint shot forward, giving no chance, hitting the heart of the pursued. Li Yifei frowned upon arriving. He wasn’t late—his delay resulted from spotting a fallen bird earlier, taking time to return it to its nest. As a result, a moment was lost. The pursuer didn’t waste a second, eliminating their target upon catching up.
