Chapter 73: Chapter 73: Buy It, Buy It, Buy It
"Wow, the longans from your hometown are really huge! They look so pretty clustered together like this," Hua Buwan marveled. It was her first time seeing such gorgeous longans. Resting one in her palm, she noted it was even larger than her thumb.
"It’s one thing to bring some over, but bringing a whole gunny sack? Are you trying to feed a pig?" She estimated the sack had to weigh several dozen pounds. It was a miracle Chen Jingjing had managed to carry it all the way inside.
Chen Jingjing took a sip of her Coke, her eyes narrowing in pure bliss. "Even though you live here by yourself, you see your neighbors every single day. You should share some with them. You know the saying—take someone’s gift and you owe them; eat their food and you can’t speak ill of them. Understand?"
She was well aware of Hua Buwan’s family situation, which was why she went out of her way to look out for her friend.
Hua Buwan paused her movements. Touched, she immediately stepped forward and threw her arms around her friend. "Thank you, bestie."
Chen Jingjing hastily shielded her drink. "Hey, hey, hey, careful! I’ve still got my Coke in hand. Don’t make me spill it everywhere!" However, she quickly noticed Hua Buwan’s emotional state and softened her tone. "It’s no big deal. What are friends for?"
Hua Buwan held on for a moment longer before letting go. She dragged the sack of longans to the side and spread them out, afraid they would spoil if left stuffed in the bag. She planned to distribute them to the neighbors when she got back that evening. Everyone would be home for dinner by then, so she wouldn’t miss anyone.
She could also message the old gentleman and Grandma Wen on WhatsApp to see if she could send them some, as they had both helped her immensely. Then there were her late grandparents’ good friends. They all lived in this ancient town, though they rarely kept in touch nowadays. After running through the list in her head, she already had a distribution plan sorted out.
Of course, she would also have to set some aside for Ling Qianjun’s family. They were her biggest benefactors, so she definitely couldn’t leave them out.
Hua Buwan gave Chen Jingjing a quick tour of the supermarket and the second floor. They rested for a while, figuring out their plans before heading out to have some fun.
The afternoon sun in Sea City was scorching hot, making it feel as if the very air had been set ablaze.
As Hua Buwan and Chen Jingjing strolled down the streets of the ancient town, sweat constantly dripped from their foreheads. Despite the sweltering heat, they were in exceptionally high spirits.
They arrived at the ancient town’s largest market, which was bustling with crowds of people coming and going. The market was filled with a dazzling array of cultural heritage goods. Excitement bubbled within them as they wove through the stalls, curiously observing the exquisite handicrafts.
Looking at the displays, Chen Jingjing couldn’t help but slip into her hometown dialect. "Time to hit the market!"
At one stall, Hua Buwan was captivated by a stunning piece of embroidery. She admired it closely, showering it with praise. The stall owner enthusiastically explained the production process and the story behind the artwork, leaving her completely entranced.
Meanwhile, Chen Jingjing discovered some fascinating wood carvings at a neighboring stall. She picked up a delicate, palm-sized carving and examined it carefully, a bright smile spreading across her face. Seeing her interest, the vendor introduced the different types of wood carvings and the techniques used to create them.
In the end, the two of them even crafted two small wooden dolls shaped like cartoon characters, which they absolutely adored.
Hua Buwan and Chen Jingjing spent a long time exploring the market. They bought several heritage items that caught their eye and struck up conversations with a few interesting stall owners. This experience gave them a deeper understanding of intangible cultural heritage and allowed them to truly appreciate the charm of tradition.
When girls went shopping, their favorite things to browse were these kinds of handicrafts and trinkets. There was always a lingering illusion that these items were cheap, making them think, "Buy it! Buy it! Buy it!"
