Chapter 72: Chapter 72: Surprised? Unexpected?
"Surprise! Were you expecting me? Wanwanzi, I’m here!"
Chen Jingjing dragged a burlap sack through the supermarket entrance, her bright voice echoing through the store. But as soon as she looked up, she noticed a tall white shadow flash past her. It was so fast that her eyes instinctively darted to the right to follow it.
"Ouch," she groaned. She felt like she had strained her eyeballs. It hurt!
At that moment, Hua Buwan’s heart was pounding. THUMP THUMP THUMP. It beat so hard that her eardrums actually ached.
"That was close," she thought. "Jingjing shouldn’t have seen Ling Qianjun, right? If she did, how am I going to explain it away?"
Ling Qianjun didn’t dare pause for even a second. Taking advantage of the moment Chen Jingjing lowered her head to set down the burlap sack, he dashed toward the back door. Opening it and shutting it behind him was done in one smooth, continuous motion! He didn’t dare eavesdrop, afraid that Hua Buwan’s friend might come looking for him at the back door. Closing the door and making himself scarce was the safest option. Back in Dongxuan Country, her friend couldn’t follow him or see him. However, he was still a little worried about how Hua Buwan was handling the situation.
By now, Hua Buwan had rushed back to sit behind the counter. Resting one hand on her mouse, she pretended to be engrossed in the computer screen. Only after "hearing" Chen Jingjing’s shout did Hua Buwan "react." She hurriedly stood up and walked toward the door.
"Jingjing, you’re here! Why are you carrying such a huge burlap sack? Are you tired? Put it down and have a drink first. What do you want?" Hua Buwan was incredibly nervous right now, so she could only rapid-fire a series of questions, trying her best to distract her friend.
But Chen Jingjing’s immediate response was a question of her own. "Wanwanzi, did someone just run past here? A customer in your store? Are they picking out items in the back?" She had already dropped the burlap sack and was craning her neck to peer at the shelves in the back.
Hua Buwan’s heart was in her throat. "Crap, Jingjing actually saw him!" she panicked. She silently pinched the back of her hand to ground herself and feigned composure. "Huh? No? I’m the only one in the supermarket right now."
Chen Jingjing frowned suspiciously. She turned back to look at Hua Buwan and noticed that she was wearing a white chiffon long-sleeved shirt today. The shadow she had seen earlier was also white. Had she just seen things? Was the shadow just Hua Buwan?
"That doesn’t make sense. The white shadow I saw earlier was quite tall. They were at least a head taller than you," Chen Jingjing said, recalling the figure’s height and gesturing with her hand.
Hua Buwan was so frightened that sweat broke out on her forehead. She forced a bitter smile and said, "You must have seen wrong. There’s really no one else here. If you don’t believe me, you can go take a look around."
Chen Jingjing waved her hand dismissively. "Nah, why would I do that? If you say there’s no one, then there’s no one. My eyes must have just been playing tricks on me."
Hearing Chen Jingjing’s reply, Hua Buwan secretly breathed a sigh of relief. At this very moment, she was incredibly glad that her friend wasn’t the type to aggressively get to the bottom of things.
"Get me a bottle of Coke," Chen Jingjing said, pointing toward the refrigerators and urging Hua Buwan over. "You’re the boss, so I’m not going to hold back. Today, my drink is on the house."
"Haha, alright, alright. The boss will let your drinks and meals be entirely on the house today," Hua Buwan replied with a chuckle as she grabbed a Coke.
"My, oh my. Wanwanzi has become so generous since becoming a boss. In that case, I definitely won’t hold back," Chen Jingjing teased. She then opened the burlap sack and gestured for Hua Buwan to look. "Take a look at the local specialty I brought you. These are longans from our Gaoliang City."
Hua Buwan handed the Coke to Chen Jingjing and peered into the sack.
