Chapter 24: Chapter 24: Preparing to Enter the City, New Discoveries
Five taels for a single room might seem expensive, but it was up to them to decide how many people would sleep inside.
Upon hearing the price, many secretly cursed the government officers for being too greedy and scamming them! However, those who had secretly stashed away some money silently stepped forward to register and pay five taels of Silver.
The people at the back gradually discussed with their families about what kind of rooms to book, then went up one by one to register and pay.
The government officers were all shrewd. They knew that even a ruined noble family still had some wealth hidden away, not to mention that relatives might show up halfway to deliver travel funds. Since they were escorting the exiles on such a long journey, the officers were determined to make a fortune.
Ling Qianjun exchanged a glance with his family, didn’t overthink it, and also paid five taels of Silver, registering his family of four for one room.
They would only enter the city gates after dark, so they were currently waiting by the edge of the woods outside the city. After all, they had just survived an assassination attempt. Everyone was in a wretched state, and such a disheveled group entering the city would likely cause panic among the residents.
However, they had already sent two government officers to notify the guards at the city gates. The two officers then entered the city to find an inn for them to stay at, explaining the situation to the Shopkeeper. This basically amounted to booking out the entire inn, and now they only had to wait for nightfall.
The head government officer noticed that Ling Qianjun had just come out of the woods from relieving himself, spoke briefly with his family, and then went right back in.
His brows furrowed in thought, but as his gaze fell upon the three members of the Ling Family sitting motionless in their original spots, he brushed his suspicions aside. He mused, "Ling Qianjun cares about his family the most; he definitely wouldn’t abandon them and run away alone. Is he entering the woods so frequently because of a kidney deficiency? It’s possible. Very possible!"
He sighed inwardly, "To think that a dignified General would also suffer from a kidney deficiency one day."
Ling Qianjun was completely unaware that the head government officer had just concocted a wild drama in his head. At this moment, he had already returned to the supermarket and saw Hua Buwan coming back with a bag in hand.
He wanted to go out and welcome her, but when he stood at the doorway, he was blocked by an invisible barrier.
Ling Qianjun clenched his hands and silently stepped aside. Only after watching Hua Buwan push the door open and walk in did he step forward to help her carry the bag.
Hua Buwan didn’t stand on ceremony. She pointed at the counter, gesturing for him to place it there.
After catching her breath, Hua Buwan opened the bag and explained the medicine and supplies she had bought for him.
"This is medicine for reducing fever. Just take one pill at a time, twice a day—once in the morning and once in the evening. You probably don’t recognize the words on it. Do you want me to give you a pen so you can mark it?" Hua Buwan looked at Ling Qianjun, holding up a blister pack of antipyretics.
Ling Qianjun looked at the words on the packaging. He indeed couldn’t read some of them, so he nodded.
One had to be cautious with things like medicine. Even though he was confident in his memory, the little figure holding its head on the box made the pills quite easy to recognize anyway.
"Such a tiny pill can reduce a fever? And cure a cold?" Ling Qianjun took the fever medicine and repeatedly stared at the pills inside, trying to figure out how to pop them out.
Just as Hua Buwan took out a pen, she saw Ling Qianjun picking and poking at the blister pack from every angle.
"When it’s time to take it, just push right through here like this. It pops right open." She demonstrated it once. After confirming that Ling Qianjun understood, she handed him the pen.
Ling Qianjun gripped the ballpoint pen Hua Buwan handed him with some awkwardness. "This is a pen?"
Mimicking what Hua Buwan had just done, he continuously pressed the clicker at the top of the pen, quickly becoming addicted to the action.
CLICK, CLICK...
"Uh, this is the kind of pen we use here. It’s very convenient to use and doesn’t require dipping into ink. Look, the ink is already loaded inside." Afraid that Ling Qianjun wouldn’t understand, Hua Buwan pointed at the ink cartridge.
Ling Qianjun’s eyes shone brightly.
Looking at his eager expression, Hua Buwan swallowed hard, unable to resist. "Here, take it. This pen is a gift for you."
