Stockpiling for an Exiled General Through My Store's Back Door
Chapter 107: Overwhelmed
Chapter 107: Chapter 107: Overwhelmed
The exiles had seen Hua Buwan and her group climb a tree, but it never occurred to them to choose one that was tall and sturdy. In their panic, they merely scrambled for whatever was closest.
Some picked trees that were far too short. A wolf could simply take a running start, leap up, and drag the person right back down to the ground. Others chose trees that were too thin; it only took a few wolves ramming against the trunk together to snap it. The people clinging to those branches fell shrieking to the earth. Before they could even attempt to run, the pack tore them limb from limb.
The government officers were much smarter. Likely drawing on their experience and quick reflexes, they had all scaled tall, thick trees, and so far, none of them had been harmed. However, watching the exiles being torn apart by the wolves left their faces clouded with dread.
If this continued, there was no telling how many prisoners would die. If the death toll exceeded the permitted quota, the guards would face severe repercussions upon returning. Yet, with so many wolves, they stood no chance on their own. Given how few capable prisoners were left to help, the officers could only watch helplessly from the branches, not daring to make a rash move.
Watching the wolves feast directly below them, Hua Buwan felt a sudden wave of nausea and began vomiting violently.
Ling Qianjun observed the situation below with equal concern. After taking down the people on the ground, the wolves had moved on to those in the shorter trees. Their side had already lost dozens of lives. He watched as the most heavily built of the pack, the Wolf King, raised its head and let out a long howl. At that signal, the rest of the wolves began to gorge themselves, showing no intention of leaving.
They didn’t want to go yet. This was a disaster. Ling Qianjun realized that if this pack stayed right here waiting for them, their entire group would be doomed.
After finishing retching, Hua Buwan didn’t dare look down again. One glance at the mangled flesh of the victims and the gaping, blood-drenched maws of the wolves was enough to make her stomach churn just thinking about it.
"Any idea when these wolves will leave? Are we going to be stuck hanging in this tree all night?" she asked weakly, looking over at Ling Qianjun.
"I’m afraid they won’t leave. They’re waiting for us to come down." Ling Qianjun’s demeanor turned completely icy, a murderous aura settling over him.
"What? Waiting for us? Doesn’t that make us sitting ducks? They’re just waiting for us to drop so they can pick us off. My God, are wolves really this patient? They actually wait for people to fall?" Hua Buwan’s mood plummeted even further.
Initially, she had wanted to save those people, but she was powerless and completely unarmed. She was no savior with boundless magic. Right now, she could barely even fend for herself.
Even if she opened the Any Door and returned to her supermarket, there were no formidable weapons there to kill wolves with. The best she could offer were kitchen items like fruit knives, cleavers, and perhaps some pepper spray. If she distributed those things for everyone to fight the pack, it would undoubtedly arouse the suspicions of the government officers.
The officers would wonder, "When did Ling Qianjun hide so many cleavers? What was he planning to do with all these weapons? If the wolves hadn’t shown up, was he planning an armed rebellion?"
Hua Buwan couldn’t take that risk.
Perhaps she could come up with another method—one that wouldn’t make the guards suspicious of the Ling family, yet could still save the lives of the innocent?
Hua Buwan frantically racked her brain for a solution.
Wait, she had brought her phone with her! She had just finished downloading a whole nature documentary series on it, intending to transfer the files to Ling Qianjun’s phone so he could show them to his family as educational videos.
Didn’t those documentaries feature the roars of countless wild beasts? Lions, tigers, black bears—she had even downloaded some dinosaur videos for him.
If she played those sounds for the wolves...
