Steampunk: Sixth Era Epic
Chapter 2182: The Elf About to Depart
Chapter 2182: Chapter 2182: The Elf About to Depart
"Is this a story told by Fiona? But why does it sound like a tale dragons use to scare their own children?"
Shard asked, and Helen nodded:
"Yes, at that time, the Dragonborn Witches at the Academy mostly regarded this story as just a story. But Miss Drago later told us that such a sword indeed exists. In fact, the ’Sword of Light’ left by the Dragon God is also the Dragon Slayer’s Sword, a weapon crafted by the Ancient God to prevent the dragon race from threatening the world with their immense power. Everyone admits, when comparing individual strength, dragons are the mightiest race among mortals... angels and titans are not mortal races."
As she spoke, she sat on the sofa, her legs wrapped in black lace stockings swaying beneath her skirt, with black leather shoes dangling from her toes:
"Of course, the Ancient God was very thorough. Since the sword was to counter dragons, to prevent someone from using it to harm the dragon race, only a person truly righteous can wield it."
"Did Fiona ever mention where the sword is?"
Shard thought for a moment and asked again, but the twin sisters both shook their heads:
"To the witches of the Mid-Fifth Era, the sword had already become something of legend and story. Moreover, Miss Fiona Drago was an illegitimate daughter and wasn’t highly regarded back then, so she left the capital of the dragon nation after her mother’s death, knowing only a few things. She only told us that the sword indeed existed and had appeared multiple times in history.
Oh, sir, just like us in the Sixth Era marveling at how distant the stories of the Early Second Era are, it was equally distant for Miss Drago, Miss Feliana, and our teachers five or six thousand years ago."
Grace gazed out at the lights outside, her voice very light:
"The winds of time carry stories like leaves from the past to the present. And when we reach out to catch that leaf, no matter how bewildered we look around, we can no longer know the story of the tree."
Even until returning home, Grace’s words still echoed in Shard’s ears. Because he was a bit distracted, when he picked up little Mia, who came to greet him, he forgot to stroke the cat’s head after lifting her, which made little Mia very unhappy.
And upon returning from the third floor to the second, Angelina, who was talking with Emilia, lit up, stood up from the sofa, and said:
"Good evening, Shard. Have you eaten? My sister and I came over with the maid."
Since Angelina and Lecia had been taking the Elf Girl around the city all day, naturally, Lecia left after bringing Emilia back in the evening.
Thus, at this moment, not only Angelina but Lecia was also present. Hearing voices, Her Highness the Princess walked out of the study. Emilia initially didn’t know the relationship between Shard and Lecia Cavendish, and now, seeing the distinguished princess helping Shard take off his coat and jokingly saying he had another girl’s perfume scent, the naive elf was immediately astonished again.
Shard went to the washroom to freshen up, while Lecia, along with the maid, prepared some supper for him. Emilia and Angelina remained in the living room, and the Elf Girl couldn’t help but ask the Little Princess:
"Your sister and Shard are..."
The latter nodded while holding a teacup:
"Yes, that kind of relationship."
"But your aunt, the Duchess, and Shard are also..."
Emilia hesitated, and Angelina blinked:
"Yes, is there a problem?"
The Elf Girl was greatly surprised, but then she thought about her few nights staying here, and it seemed there were different girls staying over each night:
"Isn’t this a bit too, too, too irregular?"
"Emilia, you just don’t understand."
The seventeen-year-old girl placed her hand on the shoulder of the fifty-something elf:
"The Cavendish Royalty has many descendants, even now, there are three-digit princesses, princes, and relatives I can’t recognize who are acknowledged. Growing up in such a family...
Worried that Shard might hear, she lowered her voice a bit:
"One must understand that if you want something, you must fight for it. My sister and aunt are typical examples of such people, which is why my aunt holds such power, and my sister is nearly the most outstanding among the princesses of our generation."
Although she was always being ’bullied’ by Lecia, Angelina actually admired her a lot:
"Love is war, Emilia. You have to grow up to understand."
After all, the human tradition of this era is to reach adulthood at sixteen, so Angelina, being an adult, had the right to say this to the underage elf.
Emilia nodded with a hint of understanding, so Angelina casually asked:
"Speaking of which, you don’t have any ill intentions toward Shard, do you?"
The young elf seemed a bit startled and shook her head immediately, which made Angelina feel at ease. However, she didn’t realize the elf girl before her, though still immature, was daring enough to sneak out of the Academy multiple times. While she might be scared when facing high-level relics, telling lies was certainly not an issue for her.
That evening, Lecia and Angelina indeed stayed over. Lecia and Shard rested in the master bedroom, while Angelina took the initiative to suggest she and Emilia sleep in the side bedroom. The Little Princess and the elf girl chatted about many things that night, which Shard naturally had no knowledge of, but it was clear that they really hit it off.
So early Thursday morning, four people sat at the dining table at No. 6, Saint Delan Square. It was then that Shard realized that since Monday this week, breakfast had become more than just him and the cat. Of course, he didn’t mind this lively household atmosphere.
During breakfast, Angelina wanted to invite Angelina again to go horseback riding outside the city, while Shard made a request to Emilia:
"Could you provide me with a few more doses of the secret potion that helped me regain my human form last time?"
He was too embarrassed to ask for the recipe, and even if he had it, ancient recipes like this wouldn’t be easy to make.
"You want to transform into a dragon again?"
The sharp-eared elf asked incredulously while holding her bread. Angelina, having heard Lecia talk about this, wasn’t very surprised. Lecia frowned at Shard; she wanted to hold the Shard Cat with her own body but didn’t want Shard to be unable to revert back.
"Don’t worry, I consulted two masters of transformation yesterday afternoon. They advised me not to use this arcane technique again anytime soon, but they also said it wouldn’t be a big deal if I did—it would just be difficult to change back again. You know, I have things to attend to out of town lately, and I might need the power of transformation spell again."
Shard explained, but he never mentioned Moon Bay to Emilia. It wasn’t that he distrusted her; he was just worried the elf girl might develop unnecessary curiosity.
Shard didn’t have much to do today. Mr. Benhart couldn’t have finished investigating his clan so quickly, and gathering intelligence and divining the vampire beast on the witch’s side would take time. Shard just needed to remember to accompany the witch to an evening party, so he planned to first visit Coldwater Port in the morning and then fulfill his promise to take Emilia for a tour around the city.
But just as they finished breakfast, there was a knock on the door downstairs. After going down to open it, he saw Rio Ensil and Matilda Delas standing outside, Emilia’s two teammates.
"Good morning, Mr. Hamilton, sorry for disturbing you so early."
Mr. Ensil said, handing a letter to Shard:
"The Academy has made arrangements for us. It’s a letter that arrived yesterday evening. This time, it’s not accompanied by any poetry paper pages, so there’s no room for us to contest."
Shard wanted to invite them upstairs for a sit:
"Have you eaten breakfast? We’re just having ours."
Miss Delas shook her head and declined, pointing to the letter:
"We won’t go up; you’d better tell Emilia about this. We’re afraid she might not take it well. We’ll pack our things; the train tickets are in the envelope too. We’ll meet at the train station this evening... Comfort Emilia; she’ll likely be disappointed."
They courteously took their leave, and hearing their words, Shard guessed the Academy’s arrangements for Emilia’s group. Though he also knew the elf girl would be very disappointed, the Academy’s decision was understandable since safety was most important.
When Shard returned upstairs, the elf girl, talking with the Little Princess, hadn’t yet realized what kind of news Shard had brought back.
When Shard hesitated to open his mouth, saying "The Academy has made arrangements for you," and waved the letter in his hand, Emilia was first stunned, and then seeing Shard’s hesitant expression, the elf was visibly affected.
She pretended to be strong as she opened the letter under the watchful eyes of Shard and Angelina, pursed her lips, quickly read through it, and with reddened eyes, feigned strength as she said:
"Thank you for letting me stay here these past few days."
"I’ll see you off at the train station this evening."
Shard’s words had barely left his mouth when the elf girl couldn’t help but collapse into his arms, quietly sobbing. She genuinely didn’t want to leave.
Lecia stood at the dining room door, arms crossed, watching the scene unfold. Angelina was slightly upset but became sorrowful thinking her new friend might never have the chance to visit Tobesk again.
Then Her Highness the Princess picked up the letter that had fallen to the ground and read it, then puzzledly said:
"Emilia, Saint Byrons hasn’t arranged for you to return to the Academy. They’re just asking you to leave Tobesk first, and then consider arrangements in other cities for other summer externship projects."
"Yes, but I don’t want to leave here."
The sharp-eared elf, her eyes red from crying, raised her head from Shard’s embrace; her pitiful appearance was rather amusing:
"Other places aren’t as interesting as Tobesk City. No one else takes care of me like Shard does, no friends like you, no rooms as comfortable as here, no thrilling and interesting things, and no Mia, the adorable cat."
