Chapter 96: The Path Below

Sky stared at the different notifications floating before his eyes.

Three translucent panels hovered in the dark, pulsing faintly with a light that didn’t come from anywhere. No text. No rank. No reward listing. Just blank sigils that shifted every time he tried to focus on them, like the Array itself was glitching.

"That’s new." His voice was low. He had seen the Array hand out titles, errors, even warnings before, but never silence.

Chloe moved closer, her boots crunching over the crystallized remains of the Soul Devourer. Her Forge Visor flickered violently, streams of raw data scrolling too fast to read, numbers collapsing into question marks.

"My interface is doing the same thing." She tapped the side of her visor, trying to force a hard refresh. It didn’t help. The scanning lines shattered the moment they touched the opening in the ground. "It’s not a malfunction. It’s being blocked." It’s being covered by some unknown force.

Crazy Hope looked between them, then down. Her holy light cast a soft, white ring around the hole they had uncovered after the Soul Devourer fell. A perfect square cut into the grove floor, and inside it, a staircase going straight down.

"Then we shouldn’t go down." Her tone was final, like a verdict.

Sky glanced at her.

"Do You think the staircase is dangerous?"

"I think anything the Array refuses to explain is dangerous," Vesper said, arms crossed. "It explained the Soul Devourer. It explained the labyrinth. It has an entry for everything that wants to kill us. The fact that it has nothing for this? That is worse."

Sky paused.

That was difficult to argue with.

He looked back into the darkness below. The staircase swallowed light. Even Vesper’s glow only reached five or six steps before being eaten.

They had already survived the Soul Devourer, a creature that fed on memories and left its victims hollow. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

They had survived the labyrinth, hours of shifting walls and dead ends that tried to bury them alive.

And now, after destroying one of the most dangerous creatures they had encountered, they had discovered a hidden staircase directly beneath its remains, right where its core had been anchored.

It felt almost deliberate. Like there we guided here.

As though the labyrinth had been hiding something from them. As though the Soul Devourer had not been a guardian of the grove, but a lid.

Chloe suddenly crouched beside the first step, her cape brushing the dust. Her visor projected several thin scanning lines across the stone, green lasers mapping the surface.

"Interesting." She said it quietly, the way she always did right before something bad.

Sky looked down, tightening his grip on the air where his blade would be.

"What?"

"This isn’t ordinary stone." She brushed her gloved fingers against the surface and they came away completely clean. No dust. "Look. There’s no wear."

Sky studied the staircase properly for the first time.

The steps were made from enormous blocks of dark stone, each one perfectly cut and fitted together without mortar. The edges were so sharp they looked like they had been placed yesterday. Not a single chip.

There were no cracks.

No moss.

No mud or roots breaking through, even though the grove above was wild and overgrown.

Nothing resembling the natural environment surrounding them. This place rejected nature.

Someone had built this place, and someone had built it to last.

"How old?" Sky asked.

Chloe’s visor flickered again, failing to get a carbon reading. She frowned.

"Impossible to tell. My visor can’t date it. The Array isn’t providing a reference either."

She paused, letting the scan run deeper.

"But it’s old. The air inside is stale in a way that only happens when a place has been sealed for a very, very long time."

Vesper narrowed her eyes, her holy glow dimming slightly as if the darkness below was pressing against it.

"Older than the labyrinth?"

Chloe nodded slowly.

"Much older. The labyrinth is a living construct. It shifts, it grows. This... this is static. This was here before. The labyrinth might have been built _over_ it to hide it."

That thought sent a chill through the air that had nothing to do with the cold.

Sky slowly drew his Blood Blade.

The familiar crimson weapon materialized in his hand with a soft _shing_, casting a faint red glow across the entrance and their faces. The light made the staircase look even deeper, the shadows between each step longer.

"Then I guess we’re going down." He said it like he had already decided an hour ago.

Vesper looked at him, eyebrow raised.

"You decided that quickly."

"If we go back the way we came, we’d have to cross the labyrinth again, and that’s if it even lets us back through the same way," Sky said. "It’s already reconfiguring. I can hear it."

He glanced over his shoulder at the remains of the Soul Devourer, its massive body already dissolving into grey ash, revealing more of the staircase entrance.

"Besides, something tells me this isn’t just a staircase. The Array never gives us a free path. It gives us a choice. This is a path it didn’t want us to find."

Chloe sighed, standing up and wiping her gloves. The visor was still spitting out errors.

"That’s exactly what worries me. If this was hidden by the Soul Devourer, what was the Devourer protecting? Or what was it _imprisoning_?"

Sky gave a faint, tired smile. That was the closest to fear he ever showed.

"Then stay close. Both of you."

Vesper gave him a cold look, but there was no real heat in it.

"I don’t need you telling me that."

Sky raised an eyebrow, the red light from his blade reflecting in her eyes.

"I didn’t say you did. I said it for me."

Chloe quietly chuckled, despite herself. The sound echoed strangely down the stairwell, repeating for longer than it should have.

For a moment, the tension eased, just enough to breathe.

Then Vesper stepped onto the first stone without waiting. The sound her boot made was wrong - too solid, too loud, like stepping on a drum.

Sky followed right behind her, Blood Blade held low to light the steps.

Chloe came last, pulling her visor down again, letting its failed scans run anyway.

The three of them began descending.

With every step, the sounds of the ruined grove faded farther behind them. The wind through the dead trees, the distant groan of the labyrinth walls moving, all of it became muffled, then gone.

The air grew colder. Not the fresh cold of night, but an old, still cold that clung to their lungs and made their breath fog in unnatural, slow patterns.

The light from above slowly disappeared, the square of grey sky shrinking to a line, then a dot, then nothing.

Soon, the only illumination came from Vesper’s faint holy glow around her shoulders and the pulsing crimson light of Sky’s Blood Blade. Two colors that should never have been together, holy and cursed, making the stone walls look like wet blood and bone.

Chloe continued scanning the staircase walls as they went, her expression gradually becoming more focused, less like a scientist and more like someone realizing they are out of their depth.

"There’s something strange." She stopped on a step, running her hand along the wall. There were markings now, faint grooves.

Sky glanced back over his shoulder.

"What now?"

"I’m still not getting a complete reading. But the walls... look."

Vesper turned her light toward it.

Carvings. Not writing they knew, but repeating spirals and chained figures, all facing downward, deeper.

"Because of the staircase?" Sky asked.

"Yes. The interference is coming from the stone itself." Chloe looked down at the endless steps spiraling below them. They still couldn’t see the bottom.

"But it’s different from before. In the labyrinth it was like static. Like something jamming the signal."

Vesper turned slightly, her face pale in the mixed light.

"Different how?"

Chloe hesitated, and that hesitation was louder than any alarm.

"The deeper we go, the stronger the interference becomes. But it’s not trying to block me anymore. My visor isn’t being jammed. It’s... it’s failing to translate."

Sky frowned, the Blood Blade flickering slightly in his hand.

"So whatever is down there doesn’t want to be detected."

Chloe shook her head, her voice dropping to almost a whisper.

"I wouldn’t say that. If it didn’t want to be found, it would have stayed hidden."

She looked up from her visor, her eyes meeting Sky’s in the red glow.

"I’d say whatever is down there is simply outside what my system can currently understand. It’s older than the Array’s language."

Sky smiled faintly, but it didn’t reach his eyes.

"Somehow, that’s not any more reassuring."

None of them laughed that time.

They continued downward, the staircase turning slightly, the air growing heavier with each level.

And the deeper they went...

The older the staircase became.
