Soulless Soul
Chapter 95: The Descent
Chapter 95: The Descent
The entire processing feed went dead. Three flashing dashes replaced everything.
Chloe’s expression changed.
Sky noticed immediately.
Her shoulders had dropped. The rigid posture of her arm suddenly looked almost slack.
"What’s wrong?"
Chloe took another step backward. She looked away from her screens and stared into the dark entrance.
Her eyes widened.
"Guys..."
Vesper turned toward her. She didn’t lower her weapon. Her instincts remained on a knife-edge.
"What did you find?"
Chloe swallowed.
She looked at Sky.
Then back at the black stairwell. "The labyrinth isn’t ending here." Sky stared down the staircase.
Cold, dry air rose from below.
It carried the faint scent of old iron and something else he couldn’t identify.
Something ancient. Something isolated.
"You’re saying this place continues?"
Chloe nodded. "Not only does it continue..." She looked down at her readings. She forced her backup processor to perform a secondary diagnostic.
The result was identical.
Her voice became quieter. "It’s going much deeper than anything we’ve mapped so far."
Sky’s eyes narrowed. Chloe continued.
"According to the pressure variances and gravitational anchor points, this shaft drops beyond the lower boundaries of the mapped floor."
She paused.
"We aren’t just moving to another level, Sky."
Her gaze remained fixed on the darkness.
"We’re leaving the known parameters of the sector entirely."
Vesper stepped toward the opening.
She stared into the darkness for several seconds. The golden light of her blade barely reached the first five steps before being swallowed completely by the unnatural shadows.
For the first time since Sky had met her, something resembling uncertainty appeared in her expression.
The confidence instilled by years of vanguard training seemed to waver against the vast, silent void below.
Sky slowly stood.
His body still hurt.
The spiritual backlash had left his muscles weak, and a dull ache pulsed behind his eyes with every heartbeat.
His armor was damaged.
The system warning still lingered in his peripheral vision, reminding him that his defenses were compromised.
Even his leg was beginning to ache again.
The strain from dodging the Soul Devourer’s earlier attacks was becoming more noticeable now that his adrenaline was fading.
But—
He couldn’t deny the curiosity growing inside him.
A strange spark of anticipation flickered in his chest, burning through the physical fatigue.
They had spent days fighting through the labyrinth.
They had survived savage beasts. They had discovered a hidden grove. They had destroyed an entity that had apparently consumed countless souls.
And now they had uncovered something even deeper.
The mystery of the dungeon wasn’t becoming clearer.
Whatever secret had been buried beneath the roots of that monster had remained hidden for centuries.
And now they had found it.
Sky looked toward Chloe.
"Can you map it?"
Chloe shook her head.
Her visor emitted a soft negative chime as she powered down the active radar modules.
"Not from here."
"Why?"
"The interference is too strong."
She adjusted her visor, tapping the side of her helmet as static began bleeding into her audio feed.
"My Network Link can’t penetrate far enough. The density of the ambient mana below is multiplying exponentially with every meter."
She looked at him.
"If I force a broadcast signal down there, it’ll fry my transmitters."
Sky smiled.
"So we’ll have to explore it ourselves."
Vesper looked at him.
Her eyes lingered on the faint curve of his lips.
Her expression was a mixture of disbelief and annoyance.
"You’re enjoying this?"
Sky shrugged.
He adjusted the strap of his gauntlet without taking his eyes off the black staircase.
"Maybe a little."
He stepped forward.
The cold draft from below caught the edge of his tattered hood, rustling the fabric against his cheek.
The darkness seemed almost physical.
Heavy.
Dense.
As though the shadows themselves were rejecting the light from above.
There was no telling what waited at the bottom.
More savage beasts?
Another unmapped sector?
A forgotten dungeon?
Or perhaps something connected to the mystery of the Dungeon Realm itself?
Whatever the answer was, it wouldn’t reveal itself while they remained standing among the ruins of the grove.
Sky tightened his grip around the Blood Blade.
The crimson weapon hummed against his palm, its dark energy stable and ready for whatever awaited them.
Whatever was down there, there was no point standing here forever.
The chamber above was dying.
The path they had come from was no longer safe.
And the only path left—
Was forward.
Sky took the first step.
Click.
His boot struck the dark granite.
The sound echoed hollowly into the endless shaft.
Then he took another.
Click.
Chloe followed.
Her heavy mechanical boots produced a deep metallic clang against the ancient masonry as she descended, one hand hovering near her tools.
Vesper came last.
Her blade remained raised.
A tight golden aura surrounded her body as she brought up the rear, her eyes occasionally glancing back toward the darkness behind them.
The three descended together.
Step by step.
Deeper and deeper.
Until the light of the ruined grove began to disappear behind them.
Above—
The remains of the Silent Grove continued to collapse.
Pale timber crumbled into ash, filling the ruined vault with the remnants of a dead era.
Below them...
Something waited.
And none of them knew how deep the staircase went.
Sky looked into the darkness ahead.
A faint smile appeared beneath his hood.
"Then I guess we’re not done yet."
The enormous tree finally collapsed after a hard-earned battle.
Its ancient trunk cracked apart with a deafening roar, sending chunks of blackened wood crashing into the mud. The countless roots that had once spread throughout the labyrinth shriveled rapidly, turning gray before crumbling into dust.
Sky remained motionless.
His breathing was heavy.
His entire body still ached from the battle with the Soul Devourer, but none of that mattered anymore.
He stared at the place where the tree had once stood.
The Soul Devourer was dead.
If you could even call what had happened to it death.
For the first time since entering the labyrinth, the oppressive sensation of countless souls pressing against his own had disappeared.
Silence settled over the area.
Then Chloe’s voice broke through it.
"Sky."
He turned.
Chloe was standing several meters away, her digital visor flickering rapidly as she scanned the ruins.
"Look behind you."
Sky followed her gaze.
The ground beneath the remains of the tree had split apart.
A massive staircase was slowly being revealed beneath the collapsed roots.
It descended into complete darkness.
Sky frowned.
"That wasn’t there before."
"No," Chloe replied. "It was hidden."
Vesper approached the opening, her Holy Scepter Blade already returned to its wooden staff form.
She stared down the staircase.
"How deep?"
Chloe’s visor flashed.
"I can’t determine that."
Sky looked at her.
"You can’t?"
"The Array isn’t giving me enough information."
That immediately caught his attention.
The Array had always provided Chloe with an enormous amount of information. Even when they were inside the unmapped sectors, she could still analyze terrain, creatures, and energy signatures.
But now...
Nothing.
Sky stepped closer to the staircase.
He looked down.
The stone steps were old—far older than anything they had encountered in the labyrinth.
Their surfaces were covered in dust and strange markings that disappeared into the darkness below.
Sky narrowed his eyes.
"Can your Network Link detect anything?"
Chloe shook her head.
"Not clearly."
She moved closer and activated another scan.
The visor emitted a faint blue light.
Nothing happened.
Chloe frowned.
"That’s strange."
"What?"
"My Network Link is working."
She tapped the side of her visor.
"But something is interfering with the signal."
Sky looked toward the darkness.
"Something?"
"Or the structure itself."
Vesper calmly studied the staircase.
"Then we proceed carefully."
Sky glanced at her.
"You’re actually suggesting we go down there?"
Vesper looked at him.
"We just destroyed a creature that was hiding an entire underground passage."
She paused.
"There may be a reason it was hidden."
Sky sighed.
"Of course there is."
Chloe looked toward the staircase again.
"And if this really is another unmapped sector..."
She hesitated.
"We might be the first people to see what’s down there."
Sky’s curiosity immediately grew.
The Dungeon Realm had already proven that there were places even the Array couldn’t properly explain.
Now they had discovered another one.
He tightened his grip around the Blood Blade.
"Then let’s find out."
Vesper stepped onto the first stone step.
Chloe followed.
Sky remained at the entrance for a moment.
He looked back at the ruined grove.
The pale trees were gone.
The roots had turned to dust.
The countless souls that had been trapped inside the Soul Devourer had vanished.
Everything was quiet.
Too quiet.
Sky turned toward the staircase.
Then he took the first step.
The moment his foot touched the ancient stone—
A faint vibration traveled through the staircase.
Sky stopped.
"Did you feel that?"
Vesper turned.
"No."
Chloe shook her head.
"Feel what?"
Sky frowned.
He looked down at the stone beneath his feet.
The vibration was already gone.
"Nothing."
He continued descending.
One step.
Then another.
The light from the destroyed grove slowly disappeared behind them.
Soon, the three of them were surrounded by darkness.
Chloe’s visor became their only source of light.
The deeper they went, the colder the air became.
The staircase seemed endless.
Ten steps.
Twenty.
Fifty.
Still nothing.
No creatures.
No sounds.
No traps.
Just silence.
Sky looked ahead.
"How much farther?"
Chloe checked her visor.
"I don’t know."
Sky stopped.
"You don’t know?"
"The staircase is interfering with my readings again."
Vesper glanced at Chloe.
"Then we’ll continue until it ends."
Sky sighed.
"Easy for you to say."
They continued downward.
And with every step...
The Dungeon Realm above them felt farther away.
None of them noticed the faint symbol that had appeared on the wall behind them.
A black circle.
The same symbol Sky had seen inside the Soul Devourer’s core.
For a brief moment, it pulsed.
Then the darkness swallowed it.
