Seeing Crime Scenes in My Sleep
Chapter 246 - 240: Interrogation
Cheng Xiangyu brought Jiang Li back to the station and handed her a sealed bag. "The evidence is all in here. The suspects will be transferred to C City along with it. I wish you all the best."
Jiang Li accepted the sealed bag from him. "Thanks."
Afterward, Jiang Li got into a car, under the full escort of the criminal police.
In the car, Jiang Li looked at the man beside her.
The man was trembling like a leaf, pressing himself firmly against the car door. ’Why am I in the same car as her? Shouldn’t I be in a vehicle by myself?’
Jiang Li seemed to read his mind and suddenly smiled. "Surprised? I’m the one who asked for this arrangement."
The man was so scared his eyes rolled back in his head.
"Name."
"C-Cai Yue. I’m thirty-eight. No parents, no wife. I’ve robbed, killed, and raped. I have a criminal record.
I only agreed to help Kun Sha because he promised to get me out of the country after the job was done. He said he’d give me money, enough to buy a house."
Jiang Li scoffed. "Ghost money for a paper mansion? You think a guy like Kun Sha would spend that much on someone who’s outlived their usefulness?
He’s no philanthropist.
Get you out of the country? More like he’d lure you over, strip you for every part you’ve got, and then use your corpse to transport his goods.
He’s all about making full use of his assets."
"AHHHH!"
Cai Yue shrieked in terror at her chilling words.
The two officers in the front—the driver and Captain Wen Feng beside him—listened in, and Wen Feng couldn’t help but glance back at Jiang Li.
’She had a point.’
"So, did you really confess everything truthfully?"
’Jiang Li glanced out the window. The rape and murder he’d mentioned were from before his last prison sentence. What he did to me this time would, at most, only get him a few more years behind bars.’
Cai Yue swallowed hard in fear. "I... I really told you everything."
"Cai Yue, you need to think clearly. Kun Sha might let you live, but I won’t."
From the passenger seat, Captain Wen Feng’s brow furrowed as he listened to Jiang Li’s tone. ’Is she really threatening him this openly?’
’But then again, Jiang Li isn’t on the force. The rules don’t really apply to her.’
Wen Feng watched their every move in the back seat via the rearview mirror.
Cai Yue froze, petrified by Jiang Li’s words, and stared at her with wide, terrified eyes.
’Wen Feng found it odd. Compared to his boss, Cai Yue seemed far more terrified of Jiang Li.’
Before his stint in prison, Cai Yue had run with Kun Sha’s crew. When Kun Sha returned recently, he contacted all his old associates and told them to await his orders.
’He’d also heard about the car crash and explosion back in C City. All his brothers had died, but Jiang Li had walked away with nothing more than a minor burn.’
A growing dread filled Cai Yue’s heart, and his fear intensified.
’He didn’t want to die. He’d just gotten out of prison. He was planning to finish this one last job, escape with Kun Sha’s help, and then live a life of pure luxury.’
Jiang Li leaned back in her seat and looked at Cai Yue beside her. "What do you think? Is Kun Sha coming to rescue you, or to silence you for good?"
Wen Feng whipped his head around to look at Jiang Li. "What do you mean by that!"
Jiang Li met his gaze. "I assumed you’d already noticed."
Prompted by Jiang Li, Wen Feng looked out. A taxi had been tailing them.
’Wen Feng stared at Jiang Li. Their convoy had three cars and thirteen officers. If they’d been prepared for this...’
Jiang Li’s brow furrowed in annoyance. The next second, the screech of tires echoed from behind them.
"Kun Sha’s men are nearby! All units, on alert!" Wen Feng shouted.
Cai Yue’s face lit up as he looked out the window, but a second later, his neck was yanked tight. Jiang Li was strangling him with his own seatbelt.
"I told you, even if Kun Sha doesn’t kill you, I won’t let you get out of this alive."
’Why should I show mercy to the man who injected me with a drug?’
"Urk!"
Cai Yue clawed desperately at the seatbelt until he could finally draw a ragged breath, his eyes bloodshot.
"Th-Then I’ll take you down with me!"
"A pity. I’m not going to die. You should have just told the truth."
Jiang Li used the seatbelt to bind him securely, then rested her chin on her hand, listening to the firefight outside.
"If this car rolls, you’ll be the only one who dies."
Cai Yue’s struggles ceased. He ground his teeth. "Jiang Li!"
"I’m a woman of my word. I also have money. Most importantly, you should know about my connections with the police.
I’m confident I can get them to let you go, and I can even give you a large sum of money."
Cai Yue clenched his jaw, sweat pouring down his forehead. He was torn.
A moment later, the car lurched violently, and a bullet whizzed past his ear.
A small smile played on Jiang Li’s lips. "So, they are here to silence you."
"Cai Yue, the clock is ticking."
’Listening to Jiang Li and glancing at the firefight outside, Wen Feng silently gritted his teeth. This woman is a complete lunatic.’
’Who has the nerve to calmly threaten someone in a situation like this?’
Jiang Li stared intently at Cai Yue. "What, you don’t believe me? My grandfather is the old Commander, Yu Zhen Guo. I’m the one who got Director Ji his position. Do I even need to mention my influence in the other precincts?"
Cai Yue’s heart hammered in his chest. A moment later, a bullet flew toward him. If Jiang Li hadn’t yanked him aside, he’d be dead.
His mind was buzzing, unable to process what was happening.
"Cai Yue," she said, "just a friendly reminder: this car is about to flip."
"I’ll talk! I’ll talk! Before I went to prison, I worked for one of Kun Sha’s men. After I got out, they were the first ones to contact us..."
Jiang Li hit the record button.
"Do you know the people who kidnapped Lu Xingchen?"
Cai Yue nodded frantically. "I do! It’s my old boss. He has a crew of six guys. The Dark Alley Bar is his territory."
"One more time: what does Kun Sha look like after the plastic surgery?"
"I didn’t get a clear look. He looks to be in his forties, has a buzz cut, and wears a thumb ring and prayer beads. That’s really all I know."
"Thanks." As Jiang Li spoke, she released him. An instant later, a bullet from outside the window struck him squarely between the eyes.
Jiang Li looked up at the two men in the front. "Is your driving really this terrible?"
"Switch seats," Wen Feng ordered the driver, unable to resist sneaking another couple of looks at Jiang Li. ’He couldn’t believe she’d actually managed to make him talk.’
The instant Wen Feng took the wheel, the car’s speed increased significantly.
After they’d driven for a while longer, Zhou Tiancheng arrived with reinforcements, helping them break free from the attack.
Ten minutes later, all was quiet behind them. Wen Feng looked at Jiang Li, seething with anger.
"You knew Kun Sha’s men were coming, so why didn’t you warn us?! We were completely unprepared because of you!"
Zhou Tiancheng stepped forward and pulled Jiang Li behind him, rebuking the captain, "You’re the captain of the criminal investigation team and you didn’t have even that much situational awareness? Shouldn’t you be reflecting on your own shortcomings?"
’It was a good thing Qinghe was worried and told him to come provide backup.’
"I didn’t know for sure," Jiang Li said. "I just noticed that while Cai Yue was afraid of me, he didn’t seem afraid to die. So I decided to test that theory.
Besides, I only spotted the taxi a moment before you did. How is that my fault?"
Wen Feng stood there, stunned and utterly dejected. Then, he raised his hand and slapped himself across the face a few times.
"I messaged Cheng Xiangyu and told him to call for ambulances," Jiang Li added. "They should be alive."
Wen Feng sank to the ground, completely deflated. ’I was too careless.’
"I’m sorry." Wen Feng got up and offered her a sincere apology. Though he was worried about his men, he didn’t leave.
Jiang Li hadn’t reached her destination yet, and his mission wasn’t over.
