Sea Survival: My Luck is Off the Charts
Chapter 370: A Living Ore?
No matter what Faye Yardley asked, the system didn’t reply. All she could do was punch the air in frustration.
She was completely helpless against a system that was playing dead.
She huffed in annoyance.
Faye Yardley angrily plopped down on the porch swing.
After a moment of thought, she took the mist-blue, pigeon-egg-sized object out of her backpack.
[Fog Blue Spider Egg Ore: This is an ore, but it is also an egg. It can be hatched into a Mist-Blue Spider.]
Faye Yardley held the stone up to the light, examining it closely. ’This thing is actually alive. How interesting.’
An ore that could be hatched... Of course, she couldn’t figure anything out just by looking at it. She immediately called Franklin Yardley and told him to go to the lab, find Marlin, and ask if the lab was currently equipped to conduct research on ores and biological organisms. If not, she would have to find Zachary Pierce; he had a group of researchers stationed at his guild headquarters.
Either way, she had to find out what this thing could be used for, or what it would become after hatching, and whether or not it would be harmful to humans.
Logan Langdon’s island was covered in these things. If they all hatched one day and turned out to be man-eaters, how terrifying would that be?
At worst, Logan Langdon himself would just lose his title of Island Master. The others on the island, however, would lose their lives.
Perhaps that was the very concern that had prompted Leah Chandler to risk giving her this spider egg.
’Good grief,’ she thought. ’To think I’d use an Island Entry Order and end up on Logan Langdon’s island of all places.’
Now she was starting to worry if others might use an Island Entry Order to land on her island.
If someone with no bad intentions came, so be it. But if it was someone with ill will or malicious intent... Faye Yardley couldn’t help but frown at the thought.
Before Franklin Yardley had even driven to the lab, he received another call from Faye Yardley. "Have you organized patrol teams on the island? Have any strangers who aren’t islanders been spotted?"
"Don’t worry, Faye. No outsiders have been spotted on the island. The pier is being guarded at all times. We’ve arranged for patrol teams and hunting parties. If they run into any strangers, they will definitely report it."
"They’re all new to the island, so they might not know everyone. When you have a moment, go and ask around."
"Roger that."
After storing the Egg Ore in her warehouse, Faye Yardley went to take a shower and change her clothes.
When she came downstairs, she saw that Blackwood was no longer on its Pet Sofa. Faye Yardley walked over to the porch swing and sat down, then tried calling Logan Langdon. As expected, he hadn’t returned to the sea yet and couldn’t be contacted.
After a moment’s thought, she sent him a message: Island Master Langdon, does your island have any specialties? We could have a mutually beneficial exchange. I’ve built a cannery on my island, so if you have a lot of fruit trees, we could have a long-term partnership. If you have other ores, I also know a few people on the outside who could help you sell them.
After sending it, Faye Yardley pursed her lips. She didn’t have high hopes.
Her action was, admittedly, a shot in the dark.
"Faye, did the trip to the island not go well?"
Faye Yardley looked up to meet Willow Yardley’s concerned gaze, smiling as she shook her head. "It went smoothly. By the way, take these few fruit trees and have Eamon plant them. The fruit they bear is quite delicious."
"Okay."
With nothing else to do, Faye Yardley took out some jerky from her warehouse and started gnawing on it as she browsed the trading market.
Speaking of which, the Sorrow-Relieving Milk Tea she had put up for trade earlier had been exchanged for three blueprints that were pretty useless on a raft. Someone had even left a comment begging her to make more, saying they really needed it.
Faye Yardley scoffed at the thought. ’They want my good stuff but aren’t willing to offer any good blueprints in return? In their dreams.’
She had been in a good mood back then, willing to share her happiness. But she wasn’t feeling particularly happy right now, so why should she bother going out of her way for others?
All sorts of strange and bizarre things she had never seen before always popped up on the trading market.
There were even a number of writers selling their own novels on the market. The first three Chapters were a free preview, but you had to pay to read the rest. Payment could be in basic materials, fruits, vegetables, or meat, but seafood was refused.
Evidently, after spending so long at sea, even the most delicious seafood had become common and unappealing.
Besides novels, people were also selling their own handicrafts. Faye Yardley even bought two. One was a small cat woven from some kind of air-dried seaweed; she bought it because she thought it looked a little like Blackwood. The other was a painting the seller had made themselves. The colors were supposedly made from grinding up shells, seaweed, and other things. It was an ink-wash landscape painting.
