Caelestis grabbed a glass of wine as he walked along with his grandfather to the living room of the mansion. The birthday party was only a facade for many nobles; it was more like a meeting place to discuss the rebel issue.
When he entered the room, he found Hael already settled in on one of the sofas along his own grandfather from the paternal side. Hael’s dad was from a baron’s family with ambition of becoming a knight. With great hard work, he finally got into the white knights of the Sinclair family.
The duchess of Sinclair, fell for her own personal knight and married him, turning him into the duke of the family.
"Since we have all gathered here—" Caelestis’ grandfather began. "— Let’s resume our discussion."
"We should keep this among us marquis." The baron spoke up.
"Yes." He agreed.
"While I was on the mission, I met a man named Eric." Hael began. "I was a dark magician, is what he introduced himself as."
"How strange? I thought all the dark magicians in the kingdom had been either killed or deported to Zhipher. Even Zhipher killed them all. How did you find one?" The marquis wondered.
"I’m not sure where he came from, but he had a purpose." Hael gulped as he thought over again.
Should she reveal the fact that he is behind Eleanore or not? The only reason he kept it a secret was to keep her far away from any scandals and because he believed he could keep her safe. However, now that she has married Caelestis and no longer lives with Hael. His worry for her eats him up.
He had to tell Caelestis about this, instead of keeping it a secret for any long. What if in his anger, the next time he sees is sister is on dead be—
No!
He shook that thought out of his head, but the shivers in his body remained.
"His purpose was Eleanore." He revealed and Caelestis immediately jolted out of his comfort.
"What do you mean he is after Eleanore?" He asks, worried about the whole situation.
Hael was caught by shock for a while. It’s rare to see Caelestis care about his sister and while he somewhat felt happy and all. He restricted himself from flowing away in that stream.
"He said Eleanore has something he wants. I am not sure what that is, but that must be very important." Hael explains.
Caelestis thought for a while, before asking another question. "Is it a thing?"
"I do not know."
"I knew that woman was in trouble." The marquis spoke and was immediately met with dreadful glares of the duke and baron.
"What? Am I wrong? She is a shameless woman who—"
"Grandfather," Caelestis got out of his seat. "Can you please stop calling her shameful? She is now the grand duchess of the kingdom. My wife. You cannot insult her like that in front of me."
The marquis fell quiet. He hadn’t expected a reaction like that from him. There were many times he insulted that woman in front of his nephew, he never complained and yet today he actually stood against him.
"Caelestis." Hael got out of his seat. "I am still angry with my sister. I don’t think I would ever want to talk with either of you." He walks to him.
"Yet—" His eyes show a kind of fear, Caelestis had never seen before. "—When I think about this unknown threat to her, it scares me to the core. I will break up if she ever gets hurt because I didn’t reveal this secret to you."
"Caelestis, please keep my sister safe. Ignore all the grievances we hold against each other when it comes to my sister. Don’t let her pay for anything that is going on between us. She is too innocent and madly in love with you."
On hearing all that, Caelestis scratches his scalp. "Even if you hadn’t told me to look after her and keep her safe. I always would have. Did you forget? I married her and she is my responsibility. I would never let her die on me. We will grow old together, without any of you standing by our side."
Hael had only started to feel happy with his words. He started so strong that Hael was almost about to pull him to a hug, but his old habit hasn’t completely vanished yet.
He would always start great and ruin everything in the end. His words made Hael realise why Caelestis had married Eleanore and that her life from now on was going to be filled with only darkness, without any light of love.
"I expect that much from you." His voice stiffens as he exits the living room and Caelestis, sitting back in his place.
’Could the person trying to kill Eleanore be sent by this black magic person, called Eric?’ He wondered.
"Caelestis, dear." His grandfather placed his hand on his shoulder. "We must get back to the party now. It’s time to cut the cake." He reminds her that it is his cousin’s birthday.
"Yes." Caelestis leaves the living room and passes through the room where Eleanore was locked minutes ago.
As he walked past it, he senses a very cold energy seeping out of its sides, reaching his feet through the thick fabric of his pants. It almost sends shivers down his spine. He turns around to find out why the room is so cold, but his grandfather stops him.
"Where are you going?" He asks. "If we delay anymore, Adena will get angry." He reminds him of Adena’s anger and her possessiveness towards him.
Caelestis thinks he could always come back to investigate the room, but if he is even a second late for the cake cutting then it would be a drag. Taking her tantrum would make him want to kill himself.
So, he left the cold energy to its place and started out of the corridor to the party hall. Where the cake had already appeared in front of Adena and the guests had gathered around her.
