Chapter 998: Chapter 983: Trip to the Police Station (Part 1)
Quickly pondering, Old Xu scanned his surroundings before memorizing: "Hua Biao, come here."
Called upon, Hua Biao hurriedly stepped forward, and once close, he whispered, "What’s up, Captain?"
"You’re coming with me, the others stay put." With that, Old Xu was ready to move, but Hu Xiaodong grabbed his collar.
Old Xu’s movement halted, and he turned his head.
"Old Xu, what’s your plan?"
"Just gonna check out this house, if it’s safe, I’ll give you a signal, then you can come in."
"Got it!" Understanding the situation, Hu Xiaodong released his grip.
Old Xu peeked around, then darted out like a cat, vanishing around the corner of the wall.
Truly worthy of a reconnaissance background, his infiltration skills were exceptional.
Watching Old Xu’s ghost-like agility, Hu Xiaodong couldn’t help but admire.
Old Xu easily scaled the two-meter high wall with a step and a lift.
Following him, Hua Biao didn’t falter either, flipping up as soon as Old Xu went inside.
Landing without any unnecessary moves, he immediately drew his knife into a defensive stance.
This was a natural reflex honed by countless drills, and it’s rooted in trust for his teammate’s reactions. Without saying a word, Old Xu moved alone toward the small building in the yard, leaving Hua Biao naturally guarding the rear.
The small building was a self-built house peculiar to the rural outskirts, economical and practical, and more imposing than urban commodities.
It’s just a pity now the yard of the self-built house was a mess, weeds grown on the vegetable plot, hoes and rakes that should be neatly placed scattered around, walls and ground stained with deep brown marks, coupled with a few fleshless skeletal remains, resembling scenes from a horror blockbuster.
In the past, anyone probably would’ve been scared silly, but now, it’s no different from daily meals.
If you say in the apocalypse you don’t see a few dead people a day, either you’re living way too comfortably, or you’re already dead yourself.
Old Xu paid no attention to the skeletons, pushing at the house’s front, seemingly tightly shut, the iron door opened timely.
Once the door was fully opened, Old Xu drew his knife and entered.
The musty, moldy odor was quite strong, Old Xu instinctively furrowed his brows, his gaze swiftly swept through the interior.
Like most farmhouses, the self-built house’s living room was quite spacious, large enough for half a celebration without the need for extra space.
It’s just a pity the hall was empty now, the long unlit room emanated cold and damp vibes.
Living room is safe! After confirmation, Old Xu continued further, it wasn’t long before the entire first floor was declared secure.
"Hua Biao! Get in here!" He called out to Hua Biao still outside, instructed him without delay, and continued advancing upstairs with his knife.
The second floor had four bedrooms, one adapted into a storage room.
Old Xu had just reached the floor when he heard a rustling sound from within.
Zombies!
People long accustomed to the apocalypse were well aware of this trait of beasts.
Old Xu listened carefully to pinpoint the sound’s origin, confirming it was from the storage room not far in front.
He quickened his steps, and closer, Xu Renjie was even more assured of his judgement.
Perhaps sensing human presence outside, the previously quiet zombies were now "excited".
The tightly closed wooden door began pounding rhythmically.
"Boom! Boom! Boom; Boom! Boom! Boom!"
Avoiding unnecessary trouble, initially, Old Xu hadn’t intended to bother the zombies. But now with them showing such "enthusiasm", Old Xu feared the excessive "enthusiasm" might attract more hospitable "neighbors".
Thus, reluctantly, Old Xu had to alter his original intention.
Taking a deep breath, safeguarding his chest with the Steel Blade, Old Xu grasped the wooden door handle, exerting force to turn it, but was surprised the knob didn’t budge, the door happened to be locked from inside.
Old Xu didn’t have time to ponder why the homeowner locked the door, as his attempts at opening it had made the beasts inside even more "passionate".
Hua Biao too heard the "disturbance" from upstairs, worried about Old Xu’s safety, he quickly secured the iron door and rushed up the stairs.
Seeing Hua Biao coming up, Old Xu immediately gave a hurried command: "Quick, find a piece of wire to unlock the door."
Responding to orders, Hua Biao started searching all around, and surprisingly, really found some wire.
Swiftly he popped open the black umbrella, tore off the rain cloth from the frame using brute force, then snapped the umbrella’s frame.
With "tools" in hand, he returned to the "crime scene".
As a scout operating behind enemy lines, besides mastering various weapons and technical knowledge, some necessary "dirty work" was also essential.
Like the current "sneaky lock-picking" skill, Old Xu and the Sharp Blade Company warriors were expert hands at it.
Using the two slender umbrella rods, Old Xu poked around skillfully, and in no time, an indistinct "lock opened" sound was heard from inside.
As this sound emerged, the commotion inside grew larger.
It seemed being unable to open doors made zombies quite anxious, they finally started low growling.
Dammit! This is deadly! In a place filled with dead things, a zombie’s growl would be akin to poking a beehive.
Facing such a scenario, Old Xu and Hua Biao instinctively glanced at each other, then Old Xu turned the handle and pushed the door open.
As the door opened, a black shadow immediately dashed towards them.
Prepared for this, Old Xu didn’t hesitate, the Steel Blade across his chest slashed forward diagonally.
The sharp blade instantly made an opening on the beast’s neck, then under Old Xu’s formidable force, continued cutting inward, finally severing the beast’s head from its body, landing on the ground.
Recovering, advancing, Old Xu instinctively engaged in combat readiness.
Likewise, Hua Biao seemed like a part of Old Xu’s body, wielding his knife and closely following.
Entering the room, the two quickly scanned the entire area, unexpectedly finding three more living beings.
Oh no, more accurately, beings without souls.
No need for words, Xu and Hua, each took care of one, easily dealing with them, then joined forces against the last one.
Everything was like a clockwork mechanism, smooth and fluid, without any hindrance.
Afterward, Old Xu finally had time to closely examine the indoor scene.
The view was a mess, the dark room with drawn curtains, air suffused with a strong smell of blood.
Judging by the number of corpses, Old Xu could roughly deduce what had previously occurred here.
Presumably, the folks inside were mostly hiding from danger here.
But unfortunately, someone among them turned into a zombie, so the room meant to be a refuge became an inescapable purgatory.
It’s a tragedy, and the most real reflection of the current world.
Old Xu lightly sighed, then called Hua Biao to leave.
They still had more important tasks to execute, no time for sentimentality here. (To be continued. If you like this work, you are welcome to visit Qidian (qidian.com) to vote for recommendations and monthly tickets. Your support is my greatest motivation. Mobile users, please read at m.qidian.com.)
