Chapter 1070: Chapter 1058

They’d set out at three in the afternoon and been gone all night. To be blunt, Tang Xiaoquan didn’t have much faith in the future or fate of those two kids.

First, the harsh environment of the ruined city made it nearly impossible for living people to survive.

Second, the two children themselves simply didn’t have the ability to handle sudden emergencies.

Add to that a whole night out there, so the final outcome... did not look promising.

But at this critical moment, Tang Xiaoquan wasn’t dumb enough to throw cold water on Huo Yuankai.

He was counting on the guy to help them get things done, so after a brief pause, Tang Xiaoquan came up with an idea: "Big bro, uh... don’t get worked up, listen to me first. Here’s the thing: we’re heading out for supplies anyway, right? You stick with us, we’ll farm around this area. I figure if the kids went out for food and drink, they wouldn’t have gone far. Maybe while we’re out gathering, we’ll run into them on the way."

"Mm, makes sense. Kids might not have the survival chops adults do, but they’re usually pretty sharp. If they haven’t come back, chances are they ran into Zombies and found somewhere to hide. Anyway, sitting here frowning won’t do us any good. Let’s hurry up and get out there to look for them." Hua Biao, with his soldier’s style, made the call on the spot.

Huo Yuankai’s mind was a mess at this point, and the truth was he really had no other options. He could only nod and write down, "Okay, I’ll go with you."

"And the kid comes with us too, so nothing else happens to him!" Hua Biao pointed his index finger at the teenage boy beside them.

Hearing Hua Biao call him out, the boy instinctively edged closer to Huo Yuankai.

"Yeah, right, the kid comes with us." As Tang Xiaoquan spoke, he picked up pen and paper and scribbled down a few big characters: "Brother Huo, leave a note at home, explain that we’ve gone out, and then emphasize that if the two kids come back, they must stay put and wait. That way we won’t miss them if they return on their own, and we can still meet up with them later."

It had to be said, Tang Xiaoquan’s thinking was pretty meticulous.

The note he suggested neatly avoided the potential problems of the kids returning by themselves.

Huo Yuankai understood the intent behind Tang Xiaoquan’s words, so he didn’t delay and quickly set to writing.

When he was done, he put the paper somewhere obvious, then finally stood up.

At this point, staying here any longer was meaningless.

After leaving the note, Hua Biao and the others immediately turned back, returned to the alley entrance, and linked up with Hu Xiaodong, who was standing guard outside.

They briefly ran Hu Xiaodong and Luo Baochun through the situation. Once he understood, Hu Xiaodong didn’t waste a word, called everyone to get in the vehicles, and set off at once.

Three vehicles rolled slowly along the road. Hu Xiaodong, driving the lead car, kept the speed very low, giving Huo Yuankai ample time to search for any sign of the missing children.

But unlike Huo Yuankai’s anxious scanning, Tang Xiaoquan was surprisingly relaxed as he looked around.

He wasn’t searching for the kids though, so what was he doing?

Very practically, Tang Xiaoquan was looking for things their team needed for this run.

As the saying goes, hard work pays off. The Survivor Squad, who’d already lived through plenty of disasters, got a special bit of luck this time.

Sure enough, after they’d only just left the alley, they came upon a commercial street specializing in building materials.

Of course, Hu Xiaodong hadn’t forgotten the mission. As soon as the car rolled up to the intersection, he stomped on the brakes.

When the vehicle stopped, Huo Yuankai, not knowing why, turned his head.

Different goals, different thoughts. Hu Xiaodong very deliberately ignored him, picked up the hand-held Radio, and broadcast to all vehicles: "Heads up, everyone, this street’s got what we need. In a bit, Dazhuang, Hua Biao, and I will take point. The others go in and grab supplies. Move fast, safety first!"

With that said, Hu Xiaodong opened the door, grabbed his gear, and jumped out.

One after another, Wei Dazhuang, Hua Biao, and the rest all came up.

Then the three of them, weapons in hand, started clearing the street.

Since it was a building materials street, the number of Zombies on the road was noticeably lower than on a regular street.

That was why Hu Xiaodong dared to tackle an entire street with just a handful of people in a situation like this.

As usual, Wei Dazhuang was the vanguard. When it came to killing Zombies, he was definitely the most eager of them all.

On top of that, after the training over the previous stretch of time, Wei Dazhuang’s Scythe work had grown more and more polished.

In a matter of seconds, the first "unlucky bastard" who rushed up to greet them had his skull split open and went down for good.

But one of their own falling didn’t dampen the "excitement" of the fans on the street. Stirred up by the noise, more Zombies started converging on the Survivor Squad.

Hua Biao didn’t use a gun. The two blades in his hands—one long, one short—were his tools for killing.

Far targets, he chopped down directly; near ones, he stabbed to finish.

The long-short combination covered both close and mid-range nicely.

As for Hu Xiaodong, he didn’t rush in. As the only member of the team with Skills to kill from range with a bow and arrows, he mostly handled overwatch and support.

If you classified them by game roles, then Wei Dazhuang and Hua Biao were the MTs, while Hu Xiaodong was the ranged DPS responsible for output.

The three of them worked together constantly, their coordination seamless. While they were happily slaughtering, Tang Xiaoquan, Wang Qiang, and Luo Baochun weren’t idle either; they hurriedly called for Huo Yuankai and the teenage boy to get out of the car.

After all, killing Zombies was secondary; gathering supplies was the real priority.

And at this point, if Huo Yuankai wanted to break off from the group to go find the kids, it clearly wasn’t realistic.

First, it wouldn’t look good.

Second, his own son was still in their hands.

So, considering those two factors, whether he liked it or not, he had to stay and stick with the Survivors.

This was exactly what Tang Xiaoquan had planned for. He’d already figured Huo Yuankai wouldn’t leave.

And as long as he stayed, he’d be useful in one way or another.

As it turned out, Tang Xiaoquan’s little scheme worked.

With no real choice, Huo Yuankai could only grab his Tang Blade, get out, and fall in with the Survivor Squad.

Their target was a fairly large storefront on the right side of the street. The cement and yellow sand piled outside were the main reason Tang Xiaoquan had picked this place.

Just as they walked in, a Runner burst out at them. Caught off guard, Tang Xiaoquan was slammed into full-on.

Luckily, Luo Baochun was right behind him, so he avoided going down hard.

But while Tang Xiaoquan didn’t fall, the Zombie was still on its feet as well.

And in terms of neural response speed, Tang Xiaoquan was obviously no match for a Zombie driven by the virus.

The creature stumbled a couple of steps, then instantly righted itself, and under the drive of the Bloodthirsty Gene in its body, it lunged at Tang Xiaoquan at high speed.

In that life-or-death instant, there was no time to bring his blade up; Tang Xiaoquan could only think about dodging to the side.

But then he remembered Luo Baochun behind him, and that split-second hesitation made him miss his best chance to evade.

Shit! His mind went blank in an instant. Staring at the Runner’s face looming larger and larger, Tang Xiaoquan felt his heart sink.

Hua Biao, Wei Dazhuang, and Hu Xiaodong were all fully focused on the Zombies in front of them, completely unaware of the danger unfolding in the back.

Even Wang Qiang, holding the rear, couldn’t get there in time to help.

And right at that critical moment, Huo Yuankai made his move...
