Chapter 464: Repay Your Debt

Old Madam Han did not want to continue this depressing topic anymore and said to Han Xuehan, "Let’s go; I will prepare some braised pork noodles for you. I was planning on making some crab roe fried rice but obviously we need to change the plan."

Though she said that one could see that Old Madam Han was only joking, which made Han Xuehan feel relaxed as well.

"Do you want to eat some sticky rice dumplings?" Old Madam Han asked as she took Han Xuehan inside the house. She was worried that after what happened Han Xuehan would end up becoming even more reserved. So, she took the liberty to treat her better lest Han Xuehan end up retreating in her shell once again.

Han Xuehan wanted to refuse but when she saw the hesitant expression on her grandmother’s face, she ended up taking a sharp intake of breath and nodded. She was worried that if she refused, then her grandmother would end up feeling rejected. So she smiled and said, "What’s with these preparations, grandma? The dragon boat festival is still three days away."

"Haha, so what if there are three days? "Old Madam Han chuckled. She raised her hand and touched Han Xuehan’s head affectionately. She said in a soft voice, "Just wait. You will see it soon; time will pass like passing sand in your hands when it comes to festivals."

And Old Madam Han’s words came true. On the twenty-eight day of the month of the Lunar Year, the entire village was filled with commotion due to the dragon boat festival. Even Han Yichen, who was admitted to the hospital, joined in the cheerful and festive. Though he could not return to their home, he still handed a bunch of milk candies and sticky rice dumplings to the ward mates as well as the staff of the hospital.

The entire ward was filled with hustle and bustle.

Old Madam Han stared at her son, who was smiling like a fool and rolled her eyes. She sat down on the stool and turned to look at Meng Yunhan, who was busy munching on the rice dumplings that were filled with pork filling. She crossed her arms and questioned loudly, "Yunhan, when will you hand over your salary? I hope you are not going to ignore the debt that you owe, right?"

Meng Yunhan had just taken a bite of the sticky dumpling when she heard her mother in law’s question. She choked on the bite that she had taken and her face turned blue due to the exertion that she was putting in to make sure that she would not spit out the meat that she had eaten. After all, this was the first time she had eaten meat after ages!

The expenses alone that she and Han Ziyan had were enough to make her pocket wiped clean.

Where would she get the money to eat meat? So she did not want to miss the chance to eat this warm meal. Who would have thought that the old hag would actually ruin her meal? She suppressed the urge to spit out the food and then looked up at her mother in law, who was staring at her as if she wanted to eat her alive.

"Mom, what are you talking about—"

"Meng Yunhan, you better not start with me." Old Madam Han interrupted the performance of her daughter in law when she saw that the woman had started to quibble with her. She narrowed her eyes and said in a low voice, "You borrowed twenty thousand yuan from someone and Ruochen was the one who returned the money. As a mother, don’t you feel ashamed to make your children tire themselves out for a debt that you owe?"

Meng Yunhan swallowed hard and turned to look at her husband instinctively. She thought that the man would speak for her but she forgot that the two of them had long lost the connection that they had before. Even when Meng Yunhan turned to look at Han Yichen, the man did not say anything. He simply continued to look forward and did not rush to help Meng Yunhan like he did in the past.

Old Madam Han snorted. It seemed like her son was not completely lost cause.

She turned to look at Meng Yunhan and said to her, "What are you looking at? Just hand me the money."

Meng Yunhan pursed her lips. She wanted to refuse but just as she opened her mouth, she saw Old Madam Han glare at her. "You are not going to refuse, surely? After all, they are your children."

Though Meng Yunhan wanted to refuse, she knew that Old Madam Han would never allow it. She could only take out ten yuan from her pockets and say, "This is all I have, mom."

Old Madam Han glanced at the ten yuan that Meng Yunhan was holding in her hands; she knew that the woman had a lot of money in her hands but the woman was refusing to hand it over. However, she was not the kind of person who would refuse even the smallest benefit. She immediately snatched the ten yuan from her hands.

Only then did she get up from her chair and look at the rest of the family. "Let’s go."

Han Yong turned to look at his mother and then glanced at his grandmother. He was about to say something, but as soon as he opened his mouth, Old Madam Han glared at him. Han Yong immediately pursed his lips and turned silent. The entire family followed Old Madam Han out of the ward without saying anything, and when Meng Yunhan saw them following that old hag out of the ward, she was so angry that she wanted to kick them out.

These bastards! She had raised them with all her might and even gave birth to them with her life on the line; how could they support that old hag instead of her? Their old woman was bullying her and yet not one of them said anything. Instead, they all listened to her as if the old hag were the one who took care of them when they were young.
