Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]
Chapter 136: What He Threw Away
The fox returned to Julian’s room just as evening light began slanting gold through the window, trotting in with the particular weariness of a creature that had spent the better part of the day crossing an unfamiliar, sprawling academy on legs considerably shorter than the distance called for.
"delivered," it announced, hopping up onto the edge of Julian’s bed with a tired huff. "the message reached him properly. and I might have said a few extra things while I was there."
"extra things," Julian repeated, glancing over from where he sat, exhaustion pulling heavy at his own limbs after the day’s fight.
"nothing you need to worry about," the fox said, already curling into a tight, weary ball against the blanket. "I’m exhausted. this academy is entirely too big for something my size to keep crossing back and forth all day. I want to sleep."
"go ahead," Julian said, something faintly amused threading through his tired voice. "you’ve earned it."
The fox didn’t need further permission, tucking its nine tails close around itself and settling into stillness within moments, soft, even breathing filling the quiet room.
Julian watched it a moment longer before letting his own eyes close, exhaustion from the day’s fight finally, fully catching up with him now that the adrenaline had drained away entirely. Summoning two entirely different weapons, pushing his reserves harder than he had since waking, and delivering the conversation with Logan that still sat heavy and unresolved somewhere beneath his calm exterior — all of it settled now into simple, bone-deep tiredness, and he let himself drift toward rest without further resistance, the quiet room settling peaceful around them both.
---
Logan sat alone in his own quarters long after the training hall had emptied, staring at the broken halves of his blade laid across his desk, the weight of the afternoon pressing down heavy and unbearable across his chest.
He’d lost. Thoroughly, publicly, in front of nearly the entire academy. That much he’d expected, had braced himself for from the very moment Julian agreed to the fight at all. What he hadn’t braced himself for was the quiet, absolute finality of Julian’s words afterward, delivered without cruelty, without heat, simply calm and certain in a way that left no room for argument or hope.
*some things don’t come back just because you finally decided to fight for them.*
Logan pressed his palms hard against his eyes, the words echoing over and over in his mind, refusing to fade no matter how many times he tried to push past them.
’I did this to myself,’ he thought, bitter and exhausted, staring at the broken blade without really seeing it. ’every single bit of this. I had him. I actually had him, and I threw it away because I was scared of what people would whisper about an SSS-Rank Sentinel bound to some F-Class nobody.’
He thought back to that day in the hall, months ago now, the words he’d chosen so carelessly, so cruelly, delivered with a confidence he hadn’t earned and a certainty he’d never actually possessed. *a useless Guide isn’t worthy of standing beside me.* He’d said it so easily. He’d meant every word of it in that moment, blinded by pride and the fear of judgment from people whose opinions, in hindsight, had never actually mattered nearly as much as he’d let them.
’and now,’ Logan thought, grief and shame both tangling thick and inescapable in his chest, ’the same man I called useless just summoned two different weapons out of thin air, faced down something ancient enough to nearly level this entire capital, and single-handedly turned the tide of a battle that would have otherwise cost this Empire everything. and I called him weak. I called him unworthy.’
He let out a slow, shuddering breath, the shame of it settling deep and permanent now, no longer something he could simply apologize his way past with careful, rehearsed words spoken beside an unconscious bed.
’I didn’t even know him,’ Logan thought slowly, turning the realization over with fresh, aching clarity. ’not really. I knew the rank he’d been given. I knew what people whispered about him. I never once bothered to actually see the person underneath any of that, not until it was already too late to matter.’
He thought of the walk that morning, of Julian’s calm, unreadable expression giving nothing away, and understood now, with bitter, hard-won clarity, exactly why that composure had felt so impossible to properly read. It hadn’t been cruelty. It had been Julian, quite reasonably, protecting himself from someone who’d already proven, once, exactly how easily he could be discarded the moment convenience demanded it.
’I would have done the same thing,’ Logan admitted to himself, the honesty of it cutting sharp and unwelcome through his grief. ’if someone had humiliated me the way I humiliated him, I wouldn’t trust a few weeks of guilt and a training hall fight to erase it either.’
He picked up one of the broken blade halves, turning it slowly in his hands, studying the clean, precise fracture where Julian’s strength had simply overwhelmed the steel entirely.
’he didn’t even need to try that hard,’ Logan thought. ’and I still lost everything trying, because I’d already lost the only thing that actually mattered long before this fight ever started.’
A knock sounded at his door, soft and hesitant, and Logan looked up, unsure whether he wanted company or solitude more in this particular moment.
"come in," he called anyway, voice rough.
The door opened to reveal one of his fellow Sentinels, a young man Logan had trained alongside for years, expression careful and uncertain as he stepped inside.
"heard about the fight," the Sentinel said quietly. "And wanted to check on you."
"I’m fine," Logan said automatically, though the words came out hollow even to his own ears.
The Sentinel studied him a long moment, clearly not believing it, but didn’t press further, simply settling into the chair across from Logan’s desk with quiet, patient presence.
"for what it’s worth," the Sentinel said finally, "everyone in that hall respected what you did today. losing that badly, and still not stopping. that took something."
"it wasn’t enough," Logan said quietly.
"no," the Sentinel agreed, not bothering to soften the truth. "it wasn’t. but that doesn’t mean it meant nothing either. sometimes the fight matters even when the outcome doesn’t go the way you wanted."
Logan let out a slow, unsteady breath, setting the broken blade half back down on his desk, exhaustion and grief and hard-won, uncomfortable self-reflection all tangling together in his chest.
"I threw away something I didn’t even understand the value of," Logan said quietly, more to himself than his visitor. "and now I understand it completely, and it’s too late to do anything with that understanding except sit here and regret it properly."
"maybe," the Sentinel said carefully. "or maybe understanding it properly, even late, means something too. even if it doesn’t change what happened today."
Logan didn’t answer that, staring instead at the broken blade, the weight of everything he’d lost — not just Julian, but the version of himself who might have deserved to keep him in the first place — settling heavy and permanent across his exhausted shoulders as the evening deepened quiet and unresolved around them both.
