The fox found the Emperor still seated in his study, correspondence scattered across his desk, exhaustion carved deep into every line of his face despite the early hour.

It slipped through the partially open door without announcement, settling onto the floor a few feet from his desk, and cleared its throat with deliberate, pointed intent.

"Your Majesty."

The Emperor’s head snapped up so fast his quill clattered from his hand, ink spattering across an unfinished letter as he stared, wide-eyed, at the small golden creature sitting calm and composed on his study floor.

"you—" he managed, voice cracking with disbelief. "you can talk."

"obviously," the fox said, tails curling neat around its paws, something faintly amused threading through its tone at the Emperor’s stunned expression. "please, do not be surprised. I know it’s a lot to process all at once."

"a talking fox," the Emperor repeated slowly, still staring, mind visibly struggling to fold this fresh, impossible detail into everything else he’d already accepted about Julian’s strange, unprecedented abilities. "Julian has a talking fox."

"Julian created me," the fox corrected, settling more comfortably despite the Emperor’s continued shock. "same as he told Commander Calloway, a few days ago, in the garden behind the medical wing. some part of the abilities he manifested."

"created you," the Emperor repeated, something careful and searching crossing his exhausted features now. "that’s— that’s not a small thing to simply create. a sentient, speaking creature. that’s not the same as summoning a weapon or teleporting across a battlefield."

"no," the fox agreed simply, "it isn’t. but that’s what Julian told Commander Calloway, and I’d advise Your Majesty accept it the same way he did — with patience, rather than pressing for details Julian isn’t ready to share yet."

The Emperor studied the small creature for a long, searching moment, something old and unplaceable stirring uneasy behind his own exhausted memory, the same nagging familiarity Reid had described days earlier, though the Emperor couldn’t properly place it himself either.

"have we met before," he asked slowly. "you, specifically. there’s something about you that feels—"

"familiar," the fox finished, something knowing and faintly teasing cutting through its earlier calm. "Commander Calloway asked the same thing. I told him some things are more satisfying figured out properly, in their own time. I’ll extend Your Majesty the same courtesy."

The Emperor let out a slow, disbelieving breath, leaning back in his chair, exhaustion and fresh astonishment both tangling together in his chest. "you came here for a reason," he said finally, forcing his scattered thoughts back toward practical matters. "not simply to introduce yourself."

"correct," the fox said, tails straightening with businesslike focus now. "Julian received your letter. he’s agreed to meet with the Elite Academy’s council."

The Emperor’s brow furrowed sharply. "he agreed? just like that?"

"his words, more or less," the fox said. "he said if they want to see him, then they shall. on his terms. within the week, in a setting of his choosing. and he said you’re welcome to be present, if you wish to be."

Something complicated crossed the Emperor’s exhausted features — relief that Julian intended to face the council’s mounting pressure directly rather than hide from it, mixed with a fresh, sharp unease at what such a confrontation might actually invite.

"does he understand what he’s agreeing to," the Emperor said slowly. "the council isn’t simply curious. some of them are looking for justification. reasons to categorize him as a threat rather than an asset, particularly after today’s demonstration."

"he understands perfectly," the fox said, something firm and certain in its tone now. "I told him as much myself. he wasn’t deterred in the slightest. if anything, I think he’s looking forward to it."

"looking forward to it," the Emperor repeated, disbelief threading through the words.

"Julian isn’t afraid of much anymore," the fox said simply. "not after everything he’s survived. a room full of anxious nobles doesn’t exactly measure up against what he’s already faced down and walked away from."

The Emperor absorbed that slowly, something quiet and complicated settling behind his exhausted eyes — pride, worry, and a fresh, aching reminder of exactly how much Julian had endured that the Emperor himself still didn’t fully understand, weeks of captivity and horror reduced, so far, to careful, incomplete fragments shared only when Julian himself decided the timing was right.

"thank you," he said finally, voice quieter now, more sincere. "for delivering the message properly."

"of course," the fox said, though something searching lingered behind its golden eyes as it studied him a moment longer. "may I offer something else, Your Majesty. unrelated to the council."

"go ahead."

"he noticed," the fox said carefully, "how many days passed without a visit from you. he didn’t say much about it. he’s not the type to demand attention he doesn’t believe he’s owed. but I thought you should know it didn’t go unnoticed, even if he never brought it up himself."

The Emperor’s jaw tightened, guilt crashing fresh and sharp through his chest at the quiet, unassuming observation. "I know," he admitted, voice rough. "I’ve been telling myself every single day that I’d make the time properly, and every single day something else has demanded my attention instead. it’s not an excuse. I know that."

"I’m not here to scold you," the fox said, something gentler threading through its tone now. "simply to pass along what I noticed. what he chooses to do with your absence, or your eventual return, is entirely his own decision. I only thought honesty might serve you better than continued silence."

The Emperor nodded slowly, something resolute settling behind his exhausted features despite the guilt still sitting heavy in his chest. "then I’ll make the time," he said, firm and certain now in a way his earlier, repeated promises to himself hadn’t quite managed to be. "today. properly, this time, whatever else is waiting on this desk."

"good," the fox said, something satisfied and approving in its tone as it rose, preparing to depart the same way it had arrived. "he deserves that much, at the very least, after everything."

It paused at the doorway, glancing back one final time, golden eyes catching the study’s dim afternoon light in a way that stirred, once more, that same maddening, unplaceable familiarity behind the Emperor’s exhausted memory.

"Your Majesty," it said, something almost fond threading through the words now despite the earlier teasing distance, "for what it’s worth — I think you’ll figure out where you’ve seen me before eventually. when you do, I suspect it’ll explain quite a bit more than just my face."

Then it was gone, slipping quiet and quick through the partially open door, leaving the Emperor alone once more in his cluttered study, the unresolved mystery of the fox’s familiar cadence settling heavy and curious alongside everything else demanding his attention, though for the first time in days, something warmer and more resolute had settled firmly behind his exhaustion — a promise, finally, that he intended to properly keep.
