Reborn as a Snow Wolf: My Bloodline Ancestor System
Chapter 62 : The World Beneath the Snow
Chapter 62: Chapter 62 : The World Beneath the Snow
Morning arrived quietly over the valley.
After the violence of the previous day, the silence felt almost unnatural. Fresh snow had covered the scars left by the battle, smoothing the broken ground and hiding the footprints that had crossed the plateau.
The shattered ancient stones remained where they had fallen, but the blood of the Ancient Predator had already disappeared beneath the snow.
Ash stood at the edge of the settlement, staring toward Moonveil.
He had barely slept.
Every time he closed his eyes, the memories of the Ancient Predator returned. He remembered the enormous forests of the ancient world, the vanished civilization, the four bloodlines standing before the Guardian, and the terrible presence beneath the earth that had made an ancient creature run across entire continents.
But the strangest part wasn’t the memories.
It was what Ash could now see.
Since acquiring Ancient Energy Perception, the world no longer appeared the same.
The mountains were no longer simply mountains.
The frozen ground was no longer simply frozen ground.
Beneath everything existed a network of faint energy that had been hidden from ordinary senses for thousands of years.
Ash lowered his head and focused.
At first, he saw nothing.
Then the world changed.
Thin blue lines appeared beneath the snow.
They were faint, almost transparent, but they stretched beneath the valley in enormous branching patterns. Some were barely visible, while others glowed strongly enough to illuminate the ground beneath several layers of ice.
Ash followed one with his eyes.
It disappeared beneath the Blackfang settlement.
He turned toward the west.
Another line travelled beneath the forest.
He looked toward the northern mountains.
Several more lines converged there.
Ash slowly realized what he was seeing.
The ancient energy wasn’t scattered randomly.
It formed a network.
A network far older than the Blackfang Pack.
He remained still for several minutes, studying the patterns as they moved beneath the landscape.
Behind him, paws approached through the snow.
"You’ve been standing there since sunrise."
Ash glanced over his shoulder.
Aren stood several steps away, his silver coat bright beneath the pale morning light. The Silver Lynx looked tired, but the concern in his eyes was obvious.
"I can’t sleep," Ash admitted.
Aren sat beside him.
"Because of what happened yesterday?"
Ash looked back toward Moonveil.
"Because of what happened long before yesterday."
Aren followed his gaze.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Ash said, "I can see something beneath the ground."
Aren’s ears lifted.
"What kind of something?"
"Energy."
Ash lowered his paw and pressed it against the snow.
"The entire region is connected. Moonveil, our settlement, your old territory, the northern mountains, even places farther south. There are lines beneath everything."
Aren looked at the ground as though he might somehow see what Ash was describing.
"I can’t see them."
"I couldn’t either before."
Aren studied him quietly.
"Is it because of the creature you devoured?"
Ash nodded.
"I think so."
The answer carried a strange weight.
Ash remembered the Ancient Predator’s final moments.
It had given him more than strength.
It had given him a way of seeing the world.
Aren looked toward Moonveil.
"Does the energy lead somewhere?"
Ash followed one of the brighter lines.
"It leads there."
Moonveil stood beneath the morning clouds.
Its upper slopes remained hidden, but Ash could see the blue network extending beneath it like roots beneath an ancient tree.
Then he noticed something.
The energy lines didn’t stop at Moonveil.
They continued beyond it.
One enormous branch travelled west.
Another travelled north.
Several disappeared beneath regions Ash had never explored.
But one line was different.
It was stronger than the others.
It travelled beneath the western mountains before continuing farther and farther toward the horizon.
Ash followed it with his eyes.
He couldn’t see where it ended.
It disappeared beyond the lands they knew.
Aren noticed the change in his expression.
"What did you find?"
Ash hesitated.
"There’s a line going west."
"How far?"
"I don’t know."
Aren stared toward the horizon.
"The western ocean is beyond those mountains."
Ash nodded.
"The line continues past it."
Aren’s expression hardened.
"Then the ancient network doesn’t belong to Frostfang."
Ash looked at him.
"No."
The realization settled between them.
"It belongs to something much older."
Aren remained silent.
They had spent weeks believing Frostfang was their entire world.
Now Ash could see that the continent was only one part of something much larger.
Kael arrived before either of them could continue.
The old Silver Lynx walked slowly through the snow, leaning slightly on one foreleg. His scars were visible beneath his pale fur, and his damaged eye remained narrowed as he approached.
"I thought I’d find you here."
Ash turned.
"Kael, I found something."
Kael’s gaze moved toward Moonveil.
He immediately became serious.
"What did you see?"
Ash explained what he had discovered.
He expected surprise.
Instead, Kael looked troubled.
"The old records mentioned it."
Ash’s ears lifted.
"You knew?"
"Not everything."
Kael sat down beside them.
"Our ancestors called them the Deep Roads."
Aren frowned.
"Deep Roads?"
"They believed the ancient energy travelled beneath the land through them. The Silver Lynx could sense some of the network, but only the oldest elders could understand its patterns."
Ash looked toward the ground.
"Why didn’t anyone tell us?"
"Because the records were incomplete."
Kael lowered his head.
"Most of them were destroyed when our tribe fled."
Ash stared at him.
"Can you remember anything?"
Kael’s expression became distant.
"There were seven major points."
Ash’s attention sharpened.
"Seven?"
Kael nodded.
"Seven places where the energy became concentrated enough to form what our ancestors called seals."
The word made Ash’s stomach tighten.
"Seals?"
Kael looked toward Moonveil.
"Yes."
Ash immediately focused his perception.
The blue network brightened.
Moonveil appeared beneath the mountain like an enormous knot of energy.
At its center was something far larger than the ancient chamber he had previously discovered.
A massive circular formation existed beneath the mountain.
Around it were several smaller structures.
Ash counted them.
One.
Two.
Three.
Four.
Five.
Six.
Seven.
His breathing slowed.
"There are seven."
Kael closed his eyes.
"So the records were right."
Ash stared at the enormous network.
"What are they sealing?"
Kael didn’t answer.
Aren looked at him.
"You know."
"I know what the records said."
"Then tell us."
Kael remained silent for several moments.
Finally, he said, "They were never meant to be opened."
The wind moved through the valley.
Ash looked toward Moonveil.
The ancient energy beneath it pulsed.
"How many of them are still intact?"
Kael’s expression changed.
"I don’t know."
Ash focused again.
The network sharpened.
The first seal beneath Moonveil appeared clearly.
Its outer structure was still functioning.
But something was wrong.
Several lines were broken.
The energy flowing through them was unstable.
Ash’s eyes widened.
"Moonveil’s seal is damaged."
Kael immediately stood.
"How badly?"
Ash studied the pattern.
"I don’t know."
Then his perception travelled farther.
The network spread beneath Frostfang.
The second seal appeared beneath the northern mountains.
It was faint, but intact.
The third was farther east.
Still stable.
The fourth lay beneath a region they had never explored.
The fifth was near the Great Eagle mountains.
The sixth appeared somewhere beneath the southern ice fields.
Then Ash reached the seventh.
He stopped.
The line was broken.
Completely.
There was no blue energy flowing through it.
Ash stared.
"There’s another one."
Kael looked toward him.
"Where?"
"West."
The old Silver Lynx’s face went pale.
Aren noticed.
"You know that place."
Kael didn’t respond immediately.
Ash continued watching the energy network.
"The seventh seal isn’t simply weak."
His voice became quieter.
"It’s dead."
The valley fell silent.
Aren stood.
"What does that mean?"
Ash shook his head.
"I don’t know."
Kael stared toward the western horizon.
"I do."
Ash turned toward him.
Kael’s expression was unlike anything Ash had seen before.
Fear.
Not the cautious fear of a predator facing a stronger animal.
Something deeper.
Something inherited.
"Our elders warned us never to travel west beyond the old mountain range."
"Why?"
"Because they believed the seventh seal was already broken."
Ash’s ears lowered.
"When?"
Kael looked toward the sky.
"Before our oldest surviving records."
Aren’s expression hardened.
"Then why haven’t we heard anything?"
Kael slowly looked toward Moonveil.
"Because whatever was behind that seal may not have awakened yet."
Ash felt the cold intensify.
"You said may."
Kael nodded.
"Because the ancient records never agreed."
Before Ash could ask another question, the ground trembled.
It was brief.
Only a single pulse.
But Ash saw it.
The energy beneath Moonveil moved.
Not outward.
Toward the west.
He stared at the network.
The broken seventh line flickered.
For less than a second, a tiny trace of blue energy appeared.
Then disappeared.
Ash’s heart tightened.
Something had changed.
He looked toward the western mountains.
Nothing moved there.
The snow remained untouched.
But his Ancient Energy Perception showed him something the others could not see.
The broken seal had responded.
Something had touched it.
