The corner of Qian Huabiao’s mouth twitched. He pulled out his phone, eager to change the subject. "It’s hard to get a cab during the National Day holiday. I’ll call a taxi. Where are you headed? I can give you a lift if it’s on the way."

Xue Rui was about to refuse when he spotted a black Land Rover slowly approaching them. He waved at Lin Ruoxi, who was in the driver’s seat.

’This girl’s been acting strange lately. She’s actually been late pretty often...’

When Lin Ruoxi saw Xue Rui waving, she broke into a sweet smile and waved her own small hand out the window.

Once the car came to a stop, Lin Ruoxi hopped out cheerfully. She skipped over and threw her arms around Xue Rui’s neck, nuzzling her face against his. "Let’s go."

Lin Ruoxi led Xue Rui to the passenger side and gently pushed him into the car.

Xue Rui glanced at the seatbelt buckle, then winked at Lin Ruoxi.

"Ooh, let me!" Lin Ruoxi scrambled over to buckle Xue Rui’s seatbelt for him...

Qian Huabiao almost choked. ’Goddamn, they’re so shameless!’

Lin Ruoxi followed Xue Rui’s gaze and spotted Qian Huabiao squatting by the side of the road on his phone. ’He probably wants to give his classmate a ride, right?’

So, Lin Ruoxi called out in her sweet, gentle voice, "Qian Huabiao, where are you going? Xue Rui and I can give you a ride. It’s hard to get a taxi during the holiday."

"Get in, don’t waste time," Xue Rui said with a laugh. Even though Qian Huabiao was a total player, he was a genuinely loyal friend.

Qian Huabiao reluctantly got to his feet. He glanced at the time; he was running out of time to catch a cab anyway.

As Qian Huabiao sat in the back of the Land Rover, still reeling from Xue Rui’s watch-flaunting incident, his eyes subconsciously drifted to Lin Ruoxi’s wrist. He noticed she was also wearing a pricey-looking women’s watch.

"Huh?" Qian Huabiao murmured. He’d just checked the time himself. Something was wrong with Lin Ruoxi’s watch; it seemed to be a few minutes fast.

’A watch that expensive, and the time is that far off?’

Unsure, he glanced at his own watch, then pulled out his phone to check the time again.

Lin Ruoxi glanced at him in the rearview mirror and asked curiously, "Can’t you tell time? Why are you looking at your phone after checking your watch?"

"I can," Qian Huabiao said, the corner of his mouth twitching. ’He couldn’t believe Lin Ruoxi was asking if he could tell time.’

’But he couldn’t blame her; his actions were easy to misinterpret. It was like Lin Ruoxi and Xue Rui were born to be his kryptonite.’

He continued, "Lin Ruoxi, your watch is off. It’s five minutes fast."

"Mhm, I set it that way on purpose," she said. "I promised Xue Rui that no matter what, I’d always be a little bit early for him, that I’d always be the one waiting."

"But..." Lin Ruoxi’s eyes filled with distress as she looked at Xue Rui. In a soft voice, she said, "I was late today. I made you wait for so long. I promise it won’t happen again..."

’During the National Day holiday, she was going to take Xue Rui to see Gu Muxue. Xue Rui was great at cheering Gu Muxue up.’

’Once Gu Muxue got better, she could stay by Xue Rui’s side and fulfill her promise to him.’

Qian Huabiao instantly shot upright. He tilted his head and slowly let out a single sound: "Huh?"
