Rebirth In A Global Apocalypse: I Awakened The Hidden Class 'Rich Man'
Chapter 24: The Girl With The Eyes
"Huff....."
"Huff..... Are you...."
"Are you alright, Harvey?"
"I am. Just a few scrapes.... But Mildred, your arm."
"It’s nothing serious. I guess it’s been a while, yeah ?"
"Yeah.... Must be getting rusty, it seems."
"Haha— Speak for yourself, old man."
Inside the corridor of the twenty-ninth floor, a total of six naked mutants now lay dead on the floor, with Harvey and Mildred holding on to their bloodied weapons, their breathing ragged, and with more injuries on them than before.
They had come out of the battle victorious, but because of the size of the corridor, they didn’t have much room for maneuvering, so it had been more dangerous than they planned for.
Unlike inside the apartments, which were very spacious, fighting in such an enclosed space with so many mutants wasn’t favorable to them. Especially to Harvey, who was more of a long-range combatant.
Clearing out the corpses was also not an easy task. Since there were six of them, they both had to make repeated trips to the chutes to dispose of all the corpses, and by the time they were done, at least more than thirty minutes had been spent clearing out apartment 29C.
"I hope master Damon would be okay. I feel like that vile fella, Bradley, might try something again." Mildred intoned worriedly as she cleaned her weapons, with both of them preparing to enter the final apartment on the floor.
"Your fears are valid. However, there’s nothing much we can do at the moment. We were lucky... you got two crystals this time... so we just need two more."
The initial plan was for Mildred to handle all the final kills. The Origin crystals needed to be accumulated on one person since there currently was no crystal transfer method known to anyone.
They actually secured three Origin crystals from the six mutants they killed this time, but since Harvey claimed one by taking those shots to preserve their lives—
Mildred was only able to accumulate the other two. In addition to the first one, she now had three Origin crystals.
Hopefully, there would be a way to soon transfer origin crystals from one person to another.
The Origin system has so many options, with a lot of them still greyed out and others having some strange timer on them. A system so advanced and magical would surely soon offer a currency exchange function.
At least, this is what Harvey believes.
Origin crystals are gained if one is lucky enough to kill a mutated that provides one; you then receive a notification to that effect.
At the moment, there was only way to transfer said crystals from person to person; but that was not an option worth considering.
"We should get moving.... One last door on this floor."
"Roger."
The two of them took out all the corpses as Mildred calmed her growing concerns. They decided to hasten their pace for fear of what might have happened to Damon in their absence.
As both of them approached the doors of apartment 29D, seeing the caddy sitting right out the door, they were even more cautious than they had been when they had approached apartment 29C, for one good reason—
They had no concrete information on the person residing there.
According to the maids who go in and out of the place to clean up every day, they claim they saw a girl inside—
But no matter how much they researched and investigated, they couldn’t find anything about this person, or even what they looked like, as they also never came out.
How were they able to rent a home in a building so high-end? What was their background?
Is there actually just one person in that apartment, or several?
All these peculiarities made Mildred both curious and wary. Unknowns are unacceptable in her line of work. Anything could be beyond that door.
Leaning against the side of the door to apartment 29D, Mildred did the usual three knocks on the door, but as expected, there was no response.
She pushed the caddy aside, went to work on the door with her tools, and in less than a minute, the door glided open.
Learning from the surprise of apartment 29C, both of them were prepared for any eventuality— however, the apartment was strangely quiet.
They tactically made their way inside and were suddenly confronted by a body—
No, two bodies, in fact.
Both female maidservants, both mutated. And both dead. At least, they appear to be.
"What is this?"
Mildred’s exclamation was not because there were dead mutants on the floor, but because, no matter how much she checked....
There wasn’t a single impact or blunt force wound to the heads of these mutants. They almost looked like they were napping. As if—
They had just dropped dead.
It took a couple of shoves to confirm that these were dead mutants.
"But how?"
Mildred had a bad feeling, a dread surging from within.
She exchanged wary looks with Harvey who shared a similar sentiment.
What could be capable of this ?.
A viral poison in the room, or perhaps some undiscovered type of monster.
Either way, turning back was not an option; they needed to confirm what was in here since this floor was so close to the penthouse and the life of their charge was at stake.
With a signal from Mildred, they both fanned out to take the living room from either side as they closed into the apartment fully.
Neither of them was sure what to expect—
What sort of big bad might be lurking within these walls, capable of rendering those beastly mutants so powerless?
However, what they found caused a chill to run through their spines—
Not because they were scared; the two of them had long since learnt to harness and control their fears; but because what was before them simply didn’t fit—
It was jarring.
A girl sat facing the tempered glass windows, her back to the room, her hair like liquid silver in cold winter.
She had on a black silk nightgown that dangled over her slender frame. Her skin was as white as snow, hands resting gently between her thighs as she appeared to observe the world behind the glass windows.
Harvey and Mildred approached cautiously from either side, their senses sharpened to the max; a much more profound sense of dread pricked at their senses the closer the got; the closer they got to see the sides of her face.
And what a face it was—
A beauty that’s hard to describe with words. A girl stood apart from all around her. Only one person had ever given them such a feeling.
What was most chilling about her were her eyes—
More striking than anything that can be put into words, mesmerizing in a way that defied logic.
Yet, instantly they both could tell— there was something off about these eyes.
’Wait...don’t tell...’ The realization hit Mildred as she moved closer to the girl.
’She’s blind?.... No... There is something else....’
As this thought occurred to Mildred, out of nowhere, the girl turned, and those eyes met hers.
’What in the world?!’
