Chapter 79: Chapter 79| Full Skill Display

Kira looked at the operational file. At the Facility Nine preliminary picture. At the eighteen to twenty minute approach window and the smaller facility and the lower Subject presence. Her jaw worked once. The specific movement of someone running math they don’t like the speed of and accepting the conclusion anyway.

"Tomorrow is aggressive," she said.

"Yes," he said.

"The planning won’t be complete."

"No," he agreed. "It won’t." He looked at the directive on Kira’s tablet. "But a termination authorization changes the operational timeline in ways that complete planning doesn’t account for." He looked at her steadily. "We move tomorrow. We plan through the night. We find the sibling before Nexarion figures out that the sibling is why we hit Facility Seven in the first place."

Kira held his gaze for a long moment.

Then she picked up her tablet. Closed the directive. Opened the Facility Nine operational file.

"Then we start now," she said.

Elena was already reaching for Sable’s tablet. "The archive cross-references," she said. "I have three more that might be relevant to Nine’s layout. Let me pull them."

Sable turned the screen toward her without being asked.

Damian looked at the window one more time.

A termination authorization.

Six years of Nexarion telling him he was a failed experiment with an unstable dissipation rate and no viable future. And now, the moment he was outside their walls and beyond their control, the Directorate had looked at whatever picture they’d assembled of Subject 07 and had decided that the thing they’d been trying to dispose of for the wrong reasons was worth being afraid of for the right ones.

[Flux: 46%]

He looked at the ring.

’They just made a mistake,’ he thought. ’The same one they made six years ago. They decided what I was before they understood what I actually am.’

He picked up his coffee.

’I won’t give them a second chance to correct it.’

_ _

The planning session ran until 2:00 PM.

By the time Sable closed the Facility Nine operational file and declared the picture as complete as one day could make it the table had accumulated four empty coffee cups, two notebooks worth of Elena’s archive cross-references, and the specific atmosphere of people who had done what they could do and had arrived at the point where doing became going.

Damian looked at the Flux reading and looked at the hallway and made the calculation. Refuel window from Elena’s first cycle was still active. Sixteen hours remaining. Sable’s cycle was approaching its renewal point. He filed both and stood up from the table.

"I need to train," he said.

Kira looked up from her tablet. "We leave at 4:00 AM," she said. "Six hour drive. You want to burn Flux on training the afternoon before a facility operation."

"I want to close the gaps the afternoon before a facility operation," he said. "There’s a difference."

She held his gaze for a moment. Then she stood up.

"Hallway," she said. "I’ll watch."

He started with the activation drills.

The hallway received him the way it always received him — twelve feet of corridor, three feet wide, the safe house’s only available training space. He ran the sequence from the left side first, the non-dominant initiation that had felt wrong in the farmhouse and felt like second nature now. Controlled ignition. Hold. Release clean.

[Flux: 35%]

Elena had followed them to the hallway entrance. She stood where Sable usually stood. Leaning against the doorframe, arms crossed, watching him work with the focused attention of someone reading something rather than simply observing it. Not the operational assessment Kira brought. Something more analytical. More granular.

He ran three sequences and looked at her.

"Your right shoulder drops when you initiate from the left," she said.

Kira looked at her.

"It’s subtle," Elena added. "Half an inch at most. But it’s there."

Kira looked at Damian. "She’s right," she said. The tone of someone acknowledging a variable they’d missed.

He ran the sequence again. Held the shoulder.

"Better," Elena said.

Kira looked at her again. This time with the recalibrated expression she usually reserved for things that had exceeded her initial assessment of them.

He moved into Ember Shell.

He drew the fire inward rather than outward. The specific reversal that still felt counterintuitive no matter how many times he ran it, his pathway pushing the output back against itself, compressing it into a layer that hugged the surface of his skin rather than leaving it. The shimmer appeared across his body in a single wave, starting at his hands, moving up his forearms, crossing his chest and shoulders and down his legs in under a second. Not visible exactly. More like the air around him had developed an opinion about its own temperature. Heat distortion. The specific shimmer of a summer road seen from a distance, except it was him, and it was moving.

The barrier settled.

[Flux: 23%]

He held it for three seconds. Feeling the twelve percent sitting in the absence where his reserves had been, the cost immediate and specific the way all active skill costs were immediate and specific. Then he released it. The shimmer dissolved outward. Gone.

He activated again immediately.

0.8 seconds this time. Faster. The pathway finding the sequence with slightly less searching than the first activation. The shimmer came up cleaner. Less wave, more simultaneous, the barrier establishing itself across his whole body in a single beat rather than a traveling front.

[Flux: 11%]

He noted the improvement. Noted the cost. Two activations at twelve percent each had taken nearly a quarter of his remaining reserves in under a minute.

He moved on.

Then he stopped.

He’d been meaning to do this since the farmhouse. Since the system started building his capability set and he’d been absorbing each piece as it arrived without ever stepping back to look at the full picture.

He directed the thought inward.

’Show me everything,’ he thought. ’All of it. Full skill display.’

Ding!

[PASSIVE SKILLS — Always active. No Flux cost.]

[Grade Scan]

[Detects Flux grade of any woman within visual range. C through S. Activates automatically.]

[Flux Read]

[Detects and reads Flux signatures of Subjects in surrounding environment. Range and accuracy improve with proximity. Stationary suppressed signatures readable at 3 meters.]

[Milk Memory]

[After refuel cycle from a source, retains passive Flux bonus tied to grade for 24 hours. Compounds with consecutive cycles from same source. Current streaks:]

[— Sable Wren: Grade A. Compounding ×2.0. Ceiling reached.]

[— Elena Vasquez: Grade A. Compounding ×1.1. Streak day 2.]

[— Kira Claire: Grade B. Compounding ×1.0. Streak day 1. Lactation Induction required.]

[Flux Synchronization]

[Emergency passive. Triggers when Flux drops below 5% and Sable Wren is within 10 meters. Restores 5% from Milk Memory bond depth. Source: A-grade ceiling bond.]

[ACTIVE SKILLS — Flux cost applies per activation.]

[Lactation Induction]

[Forces milk production in target regardless of natural state. Flux cost: 5%. Duration scales with Flux invested. Required for Kira Claire and Elena Vasquez until natural production established. Elena: estimated 2-3 cycles remaining. Kira: unknown.]

[Pyros Surge — UPGRADED]

[Boosts fire output by 20% above upgraded baseline. Activation time: 0.6 seconds. Flux cost: 12% per activation.]

[Ember Shell — UPGRADED]

[Generates full body heat barrier. Deflects physical impact. Reduces Flux trace in environment by 40% during sustained deployment. Activation time: 0.8 seconds. Flux cost: 12% per activation.]

[SYSTEM PASSIVES — Unlocked through progression.]

[Seal Conduit — Ring Artifact]

[Aria Laine personal artifact. Passive seal degradation acceleration: +15% per day of sustained contact. Currently active.]

[External Seal Contribution]

[Source: Aria Laine — AL-001. Facility Four. Active contribution running continuously. Rate: unknown. Has been running for 15 years.]

[LOCKED SKILLS — Seal dependent. Available post Voltis unlock.]
