Chapter 78: Chapter 78| Nexarion Moves

Elena came out next — she’d borrowed more of Kira’s clothes, a plain white tee and dark leggings that fit well enough to be functional and not well enough to have been chosen for the fit. Her wet hair was braided again, neater than the previous evening’s version. She looked at Damian briefly when she came in. The warmth was present. Contained. She sat across from Kira and wrapped both hands around the coffee she poured and looked at the table with the expression of someone who had slept better than expected and wasn’t entirely sure how to feel about that.

Sable came out last. Tablet already open. Three new files pulled up alongside the Facility Nine data. She sat beside Damian and turned the screen toward the table and the morning assembled itself into the shape of four people who had things to do.

"Facility Nine," Sable said. She pulled up the preliminary picture. What the archive had yielded, what Elena’s context had added, what Kira’s operational knowledge of the network’s smaller installations contributed. "Smallest active installation in the network. Northern region. Six hours from here in a different direction from Facility Seven." She walked them through it with the methodical patience of someone who had organized information for this exact moment. "Staff of approximately forty. No confirmed Subject deployment on the external perimeter. Facility Nine operates as a containment and monitoring node rather than a combat asset. Security architecture is standard installation protocol rather than the enhanced framework Facility Four and Seven carry."

"Easier than Seven," Kira said.

"Considerably." Sable turned to the next file. "The suppressed designation — SB-002. Twenty two years in the system. The file at our access level gives us facility and relationship field only. No name. No element classification. No current status beyond the designation remaining active." She looked at Damian. "Active means alive. Same logic as AL-001."

He nodded.

"The approach window," Elena said. She’d been reading the file over Sable’s shoulder since she sat down, the archive management instinct running whether she intended it to or not. "Facility Nine uses a single shift rotation rather than three. One change per day at 6:00 AM. The coverage gap during that change..."

"Longer than Seven’s," Kira finished. She pulled up her own operational data on her tablet. "I’ve never run an operation out of Nine but I’ve been within proximity twice. The single rotation means the coverage gap runs approximately eighteen to twenty minutes rather than the eight we had at Seven." She looked at Damian. "More time. Smaller facility. Lower Subject presence." A pause. "Better conditions than Seven on every measurable metric."

"When can we move," Damian said.

"Three days of planning," Sable said. "Two if we compress."

He looked at her.

"We compress then," he said.

She was already opening a new file when Kira’s tablet made a sound.

Not a message tone. Something quieter. A specific low frequency alert that Damian had never heard from her device before. She looked at it immediately. The focused look of someone whose passive monitoring thread had just registered something worth registering.

The table went quiet.

Kira read. Her expression didn’t change in any way that was dramatic. It changed in the way that things changed when someone was very good at not showing what they were feeling and was currently working harder than usual at it.

She set the tablet on the table.

Turned it toward them.

He read it.

The others read it.

The safe house held its specific morning quiet. Coffee cooling in four cups, the city outside the window doing its thing, the table absorbing what had just been placed on it the way it absorbed everything.

DIRECTIVE 07-TERMINAL

Subject: Subject 07 — Pyros Class

Authorization: Directorate Level — Full

Classification: Termination

Effective: Immediate

Rationale: Asset unrecoverable. Continued development outside organizational control assessed as critical risk. Field assets authorized to terminate on sight. Retrieval protocol suspended.

Nobody spoke for a moment.

Elena was looking at the directive with the expression of someone reading something that confirmed what two years of archive management had been building toward. The specific look of a person whose worst assessment of the organization they’d left had just been validated in writing.

Sable had closed her eyes briefly. Opened them. Her face was the composed face she wore when something significant was being absorbed and processed and she wasn’t ready to output the result yet.

Kira was looking at Damian.

He was looking at the directive.

He read it twice. Not because he hadn’t understood it the first time. Because the second reading was where the full shape of it arrived. Not just the words but what the words meant in practice. Every field asset Nexarion had deployed. Every operative in their network. Every Subject running retrieval or perimeter work or facility defense.

All of them now authorized to kill him on sight.

He looked up from the tablet.

Three faces looking back at him. Each one carrying a different version of the same weight.

He looked at the window. At the city outside it. At the specific quality of a morning that had started as a planning session and had just become something else entirely.

’They’re afraid,’ he thought. ’That’s what this is. Not operational efficiency. Not resource management. Fear.’ He looked at the ring on his finger. At the burn scars on his forearm. At the faint suggestion of blue at the edges of his Pyros flame that had been there since the hallway lightning arc and hadn’t gone away. ’They don’t know what I am. But they know enough to be afraid of it.’

He looked at Kira.

"How long before the field assets are fully briefed," he said.

"Twenty four hours," she said. "Forty eight at most for the full network deployment." She held his gaze. "The assets already in the city will have it within the hour."

He nodded.

Looked at Sable.

"Facility Nine," he said. "We don’t compress to two days."

She looked at him. "We move faster?"

"We move tomorrow," he said.

The table was quiet.
