Chapter 71: Chapter 71| Streak Day One

She held it for a moment before letting it go. A half second of the specific hesitation of someone standing at the edge of something they’d decided to do and confirming the decision one final time. Then she let it fall.

He had not been wrong about his estimate from the kitchen doorway.

Her boobs came free revealing themselves fully. They were full and round, the weight of them settling naturally without the bra’s support, her nipples already responding to the Lactation Induction’s work. Same size as Sable if not slightly larger. The kind of proportions that the pale blue shirt and the white lab coat had been quietly containing for two days without advertising. Round. Symmetrical. The specific attractiveness of something that hadn’t been presented for attention and was therefore considerably more arresting for the absence of performance.

He held his assessment at exactly the professional level it needed to be at and moved forward anyway. The system flickered in his sight.

[Grade Scan: Elena Vasquez — Grade A. Flux restoration available: 65%]

Damian leaned forward.

His hands found her waist. Steadying, present, the specific touch of someone establishing contact before anything else. She was warm under his palms. Her breathing had changed already. Not dramatically, just the shift that happened when a body registered something it hadn’t experienced before and was deciding how to receive it.

He took her left boobs and placed his mouth on the nipple.

The first draw was slow. Deliberately, giving her body time to respond to what the Lactation Induction had built. For a moment nothing came. Then it did — warm, immediate, the specific quality of an A-grade source making itself known in the first pull. Different from Sable. Not lesser. Different. Where Sable’s had the depth of weeks of established cycle, Elena’s had the freshness of something that hadn’t been called on before. It was bright, clean, the specific character of a first time.

Above him Elena made a sound she clearly hadn’t planned to make."uhmmm".

Her hand came to his shoulder. Not his head, his shoulder, gripping it with the specific grip of someone who needed something to hold onto while their body caught up to what was happening to it. Her head dropped forward. Her breathing came faster.

"Oh...," she said quietly. To herself more than to him.

He drew again. Slower.

Her grip on his shoulder tightened. Her other hand found the arm of the chair and held it. He could feel the specific quality of her response. Genuine, unguarded, the complete absence of management that appeared when a body stopped asking permission and just responded.

He moved to the right boob his mouth already clamped on her nipple.

She inhaled sharply. Said nothing. Her head tilted back and her eyes closed and the safe house afternoon held its quiet around them and through the doorway Sable’s tablet continued to glow and Kira’s door remained closed and the city outside the window continued without any awareness of what was happening in the chair by the end of the table.

He stayed until the system confirmed.

[Flux: 27% + 65% = 92%]

He sat back slowly. Drew his mouth from her. Her nipples were flushed and erect, milk remnants at the corner of his lips. He ran his thumb across them without thinking about it.

She opened her eyes.

Looked at him.

The researcher was entirely gone from her expression. What had replaced it was something he recognized from Sable’s face in the motel room and the farmhouse kitchen and every refuel since. The specific look of a person who has stopped being precise about anything and isn’t sure yet how to feel about that.

She looked down at herself. Then back at him.

"That’s," she started. Stopped. Started again. "That’s not what the documentation described."

"No," he said. "Is it."

She looked at the table for a moment. Then back at him with the warmth still present in her expression and the researcher beginning to reassemble itself around the edges of it. Slowly, imperfectly, with considerably less success than usual.

"The grade," she said. "A-grade. Sixty five percent." She looked at the Flux reading she couldn’t see but could apparently read from his face. "Did it work?"

Ding!

[Milk Memory: New streak initiated — Elena Vasquez.]

[Grade: A. Base restoration: 65% per cycle.]

[Bonus compounding: ×1.0 — streak day 1.]

[Lactation Induction: Required per cycle until natural production established. Estimated cycles to natural: 3-5.]

He read it to her.

She listened with the expression of someone filing information that was also personal in a way information usually wasn’t for her.

"Three to five cycles," she said. "Until natural production."

"Yes," he said.

She looked at the notification space at the edge of his vision. The place she’d been tracking since the kitchen this morning. Then she looked at him.

"So I’ll need to see you again," she said.

It was stated as a fact. Clinical framing. The researcher reasserting itself.

But the warmth in her eyes when she said it had nothing clinical in it at all.

"Yes," he said. "You will."

She picked up her shirt from the table and began refastening it with the careful deliberateness she’d brought to everything since the archive room. New to this particular thing, finding its rhythm, not rushing it.

He looked at the Flux reading.

[Flux: 89%]

Passive dissipation already pulling from the 92%. The new Milk Memory streak sitting at ×1.0, a long way from the ×2.0 ceiling he’d built with Sable. A new beginning at the same grade, a different character, a different woman.

He looked at Elena finishing her shirt buttons with her head down and her expression doing the specific work of reassembling itself after something that had taken it apart more thoroughly than she’d expected.

’This is going to complicate things,’ he thought.

The system said nothing to that.

Which was, in its way, the most honest answer it could have given.

Damian was looking at her when he should have stopped looking.

Elena was buttoning her shirt back up with the careful deliberateness she’d brought to undoing it. New to this particular thing, finding its rhythm, not rushing it. Her fingers moved up from the bottom button and he tracked them the way he tracked things he was supposed to have filed and moved on from and hadn’t.
