Chapter 70: Chapter 70| Elena’s Assessment

Damian trained in the hallway.

The space only allowed for activation drills and movement patterns — nothing that required range or sustained output. No target work, no Ember Shell repetitions beyond two activations, no Pyros Surge. Just the fundamentals. The kind of session that maintained what four days of farmhouse training had built without burning through reserves, he needed for everything else the day might require. His Flux wasn’t at a level that could absorb it anyway.

He was halfway through the third sequence when Elena appeared at the hallway entrance.

She was leaning against the doorframe with her coffee cup and the expression she’d had since the morning kitchen conversation. The one that was still building something from everything he’d told her and hadn’t finished building it yet. She watched him run the sequence without commenting.

He finished. Looked at her.

"The notification," she said. "This morning. When I walked into the kitchen." She tilted her head slightly. "Your eyes moved to the upper right. The same way they moved in the archive room when I walked through the door." She paused. "It happened again just now when you looked at me."

He looked at her.

"You’ve been tracking it," he said.

"I’m a researcher," she said. "I track things." She pushed off the doorframe. "The notification in the archive room. You told me this morning it said you were going to need to explain things to me." She held his gaze. "You explained a lot of things. You didn’t explain that one."

He looked at the hallway. At his hands. At the Flux reading at the edge of his vision.

The window was closing. He could feel it in the specific way he felt it. The Milk Memory bonus thinning at the very edges of its twenty four hour duration, the floor it had been holding beginning to lose its purchase. Not urgent yet. Getting there.

He looked at Elena.

She looked back at him with the sharp focused patience of someone who had asked a precise question and was waiting for a precise answer.

"Come sit down," he said.

They went to the main room. Sat across from each other at the end of the table away from where Sable was working. Close enough that the conversation could stay between them. Far enough that it wasn’t a production.

"The system has a passive skill," he said. "It runs continuously. No Flux cost. It activates automatically when a woman enters my visual range."

She looked at him. "It assesses women."

"It assesses a specific biological characteristic," he said. "Related to my refuel method." He held her gaze. "The grade determines how much Flux a refuel cycle restores. C through S. Each grade carries a different restoration volume."

She processed this with the expression she processed everything — quickly, completely, without visible reaction at the surface while something more significant happened underneath it.

"And when I walked through the archive room door," she said.

"The scan activated," he said. "Yes."

"What grade," she said.

He looked at her directly. "A," he said.

She was quiet for a moment. Not uncomfortable quiet. Thinking quietly, the specific silence of a researcher integrating a data point into a framework that was still under construction.

"A-grade," she said. "Which means.." She pulled up what he’d told her that morning about the grade system, cross-referencing it against this new piece. "Sixty five percent Flux restoration per cycle."

"Yes," he said.

She looked at her coffee cup. Then back at him.

"And you’ve known since the archive room," she said.

"Since the archive room," he confirmed.

She was quiet again. Longer this time. He watched her face move through several things. The researcher’s assessment first, precise and analytical. Then something that came after the assessment. Something less managed.

"That’s why you looked," she said. "In the kitchen this morning. When I came out."

He held her gaze. "The scan is passive," he said. "It runs whether I intend it to or not."

"But the looking," she said. "That was you."

A brief pause.

"Yes," he said. "That was me."

She looked at him for a long moment with the expression that had nothing analytical left in it. Just the specific warmth of a woman who had been told something honest and was deciding what to do with the honesty.

"Show me," she said.

He looked at her.

"The refuel," she said. "How it works. What it actually is." She held his gaze steadily. "I’ve read Nexarion’s documentation on Subject refuel methods. Dry. Clinical. Referenced in passive voice." She paused. "I want to understand what it actually is. Not the file. The reality."

He looked at the hallway. Sable’s tablet was visible through the main room doorway. She was working, focused, her back to them. Kira’s door was closed.

He looked at Elena.

"It requires Lactation Induction," he said. "A skill. It cost me Five percent of my Flux level. It initiates milk production in the source regardless of natural state."

She absorbed this. "You’d have to use a skill on me," she said.

"Yes," he replied.

She looked at her coffee cup for a moment. Then she set it down on the table with the deliberate placement of someone who had finished one thing and was starting another.

"Alright," she said.

Damian used Lactation Induction first.

[Flux: 27%]

Five percent gone before anything else happened. The specific cost of initiating something a body hadn’t been prepared for. He felt the skill activate and reach and Elena’s eyes widened slightly at the sensation. Not pain, something more unfamiliar than pain, the awareness of a biological process beginning that she hadn’t initiated herself.

"That’s strange," she said quietly.

"It fades," he said. "Give it a moment."

She gave it a moment.

Then she reached for the buttons of her pale blue shirt. Not the lab coat, she’d left that on the chair, just the shirt underneath. She undid them with the careful deliberateness of someone doing something new and not rushing it. Shrugged it off her shoulders. Reached behind herself.

Placed her hands to Unclasp her bra.
