Chapter 391: Slateport Contest
The next day.
The venue for the Slateport Pokémon Contest.
Before the event had even officially opened, the sound of ceremonial cannons and fireworks rang out, making the entire venue incredibly lively.
During their conversation yesterday, May decided to have her starter Pokemon, Blaziken, perform.
To prevent any accidents, May spent the whole night training with Blaziken for the first round of screening.
Seeing the faint dark circles under May’s eyes, Kana asked in Telekinesis, "Huh, May, didn’t you sleep well last night?"
"Ah~ I had some things to do last night, so I went to bed a little late," May said, yawning.
Kana teased, "You wouldn’t be nervous, would you?"
"I’m not nervous at all! I’m a veteran contestant who has participated in many competitions!"
May acted all proud.
Kana looked regretful. "It’s a pity Ash didn’t sign up for this competition. I really wanted to battle him."
May didn’t want to dampen her spirits, so she comforted her, "There will be opportunities in the future, Kana."
As time passed, the Slateport Contest officially kicked off.
May was the first to appear in the first round of screening.
"Blaziken, take the stage!"
"Blaziken!"
Blaziken entered with a backflip, landing on one knee with its claws crossed over its chest.
This move, which fully showcased Blaziken’s jumping ability and agility, drew applause and cheers from the entire audience.
"Blaziken, next is Flame Vortex!"
Blaziken leaped high again, using a spinning motion to execute Flame Vortex. Before long, a fireball had formed above the stage.
Blaziken’s fire-handling skills were taught personally by Ash’s Typhlosion, so there was almost no chance of it going out of control.
"Very good, Blaziken, jump up and use Sky Uppercut!"
Blaziken leaped again, shattering the fireball with one punch. Then, under its deliberate control, the fragmented wisps of flame lingered around its body, highlighting its strong physique and flame-like feathers.
"Thank you to contestant May and her Blaziken for their performance. Now, let’s have the judges score."
27.2 points!
"Wow, that’s a very good score. Let’s give Ms. May another round of applause!"
As the first round of screening continued, it was soon time for contestant number 18, Kana, to take the stage.
The core of Kana’s performance was showcasing Grumpig’s Telekinesis control and its hearty appetite, putting on a show of controlling PokeBlocks with Telekinesis before swallowing them all in one go.
Whether it was because the competition was rigged or the judges had poor taste, Kana’s performance score was actually higher than May’s, at 27.7 points.
The last contestant in the first round of screening was none other than Jessie, who was using the alias "Matmajie Jessie".
The Pokemon Jessie used was none other than James’s Chimecho.
Chimecho’s own Heal Bell had the whole audience intoxicated, but Jessie was dissatisfied with such a bland sound. She reached out, grabbed Chimecho’s hem, and squeezed hard, causing Chimecho’s ringing to undergo a 180-degree turn.
Watching Jessie’s rough treatment of Chimecho made James in the audience ache with sympathy.
As it turned out, Jessie really had a strong talent for performance, ultimately taking the highest score of the first round of the Grand Festival — 30 points!
Not long after Jessie’s performance ended, the list of those advancing to the second round of screening was announced.
May, Kana, and Jessie were all on the list, along with five other random contestants.
In the battle brackets for the second round of screening, May and Jessie were set to potentially meet in the semifinals, while Kana happened to be in a different half of the bracket from May and the others.
With the strength of May, Jessie, and Kana, they all easily advanced through their first battles.
The first semifinal match: May vs. Jessie.
"Blaziken, take the stage!"
"Go, Chimecho!"
Both of them released their Pokemon almost simultaneously.
"Blaziken, use Flame Vortex."
Blaziken took the initiative, spitting out a fiery tornado that trapped Chimecho in the middle.
Jessie’s score continued to drop.
"Chimecho, don’t just stand there, use Heal Bell!" Jessie shouted.
Forced by Jessie’s aggression, Chimecho could only emit a pleasant ringing sound on the spot.
The ear-piercing ringing sound unconsciously entranced Blaziken, causing the Flame Vortex to be unintentionally cut off, and May’s score began to drop continuously as a result.
May came to her senses and continued to command, "Blaziken, pull yourself together and use Double Kick!"
Upon hearing this, Blaziken instinctively rushed over and delivered two kicks.
In the audience, James saw his Chimecho get kicked twice by Blaziken and cried out in heartache, lamenting how pitiful his Chimecho was.
"Damn it, how is that little girl’s Blaziken so strong?" Jessie gritted her teeth. "Chimecho, use Wrap!"
Chimecho flew in front of Blaziken and used its body to constrict Blaziken’s neck.
"Blaziken, use Peck to break free!"
Blaziken pecked wildly at its face, and Chimecho, feeling the pain, let go immediately.
"Very good, Blaziken, use Flame Vortex one more time to finish it!"
Blaziken replicated its opening attack, and Chimecho was once again surrounded by the Flame Vortex, being scorched.
Facing the predicament, Jessie suddenly remembered James’s warning to her. The corners of her mouth curled up slightly as she shouted, "Chimecho, use Double-Edge!"
In the audience, James felt something was very wrong when he saw the strange smile on Jessie’s face. After hearing her command with his own ears, he shouted in heartbreak, "Chimecho, no! That hurts!"
Meowth nodded in agreement, "That’s right, it really hurts, Meowth. A portion of the damage dealt to the opponent will be reflected back to yourself..."
Ash and Brock, who were also in the audience, naturally noticed James and Meowth.
"It seems that guy James is really devoted to his Pokemon!" Brock exclaimed.
Ash nodded, "When it comes to their partners, they really do give them plenty of care."
"Blaziken, dodge quickly."
Facing the charging Chimecho, Blaziken dodged with a light leap.
Seeing this, James breathed a sigh of relief.
Why only half a sigh? Naturally, it was because May shouted the second half of her command, "Blaziken, use Fire Punch to finish it!"
A flaming fist landed directly on Chimecho.
Although this punch hit Chimecho, it hurt James’s heart.
James: "No! Chimecho!!"
After Chimecho lost the ability to battle, May was the first to advance to the finals.
And in the other semifinal, the winner was undoubtedly Kana herself.
May said, "Kana, I didn’t expect us to meet on the final stage after all."
"Yeah, May, you’d better give it your all. I won’t lose!" Kana said.
"I intend to do just that!"
Before the match had even started, the two of them were already at daggers drawn.
