What else could Julian say?
Of course he brought his sister along.
Maybe Maylene’s natural monstrous strength would help with this incident.
She was about to go travelling soon, so accumulating more experience handling incidents was also good.
Julian said, "Nurse Joy, I’m setting off from Veilstone Gym now. I should be able to reach Sweetwater Village at around five in the afternoon."
Nurse Joy immediately replied, "Please rest assured, Gym Leader Veyne. I’ll call Sweetwater Village’s village chief right away and have them prepare to receive you."
Sweetwater Village lived up to its name. It was called that because it had a well that produced sweet spring water.
Speaking of which, Sweetwater Village was located near Verdant Cloud Mountain.
During these two days camping on the mountain, the spring water at the summit had indeed been slightly sweet.
Using it for cooking added another layer of flavour.
Sweetwater Village’s spring source should have some connection to Verdant Cloud Mountain.
The Pokémon causing trouble in Sweetwater Village might also have come down from it.
The mountain was quite large. The main peak was nearly three thousand metres above sea level.
More than ten peaks, some tall and some low, together formed what people called Verdant Cloud Mountain.
Trainers near Veilstone City all liked going there to catch Pokémon.
If not for the mountain climber’s guidance last time, Julian would never have known there was such a beautiful waterfall deep inside Verdant Cloud Mountain.
When Julian arrived at Sweetwater Village, the village chief had already brought more than ten villagers to warmly wait at the entrance to welcome him.
As soon as Julian got out of the car, he had immediately called for the villagers to beat gongs and drums.
The village chief smiled with slight excitement.
"Welcome, welcome! Now that Gym Leader Veyne is here, peace is near!"
Julian hurriedly raised his hand to stop them.
"No, no, no. Wait until I’ve dealt with the troublesome Pokémon before everyone welcomes me so warmly."
"Village chief, please explain the situation to me."
The village chief chuckled.
"It’s getting late. Why don’t the two of you come to my home? You can eat while I explain everything to the Gym Leader."
After returning to the village chief’s home, an older woman pulled the village chief aside with a troubled expression and whispered something to him.
The village chief’s expression remained normal as he invited Julian and Maylene inside.
"Please forgive the poor hospitality. For now, there are only these two dishes. They’re all countryside free-range chicken and duck. The remaining dishes may take a while."
A large basin of braised chicken and a large basin of roasted duck already occupied more than half the table.
Julian smiled and said, "It’s precisely free-range village-raised chicken and duck that taste good."
Maylene happily picked up her knife and fork and began eating heartily.
Julian smiled faintly.
"Chief, the sky is almost dark. You should tell me about the Pokémon causing trouble."
"Once I understand the situation clearly, I’ll try to catch it tonight."
The village chief sighed.
"This matter has to start from some time ago. A rumour spread in the mountains that someone was willing to pay a million for a Magikarp with golden scales."
"A few young people in the village wanted to make a fortune, so they ran into the mountains to catch fish. They saw a flash of golden light in a pool, so they dug open the pool and drained all the water."
"Before they could clearly see what was at the bottom, a black shadow appeared under the water. Scarlet eyes, a huge mouth full of fangs. It scared them so badly that they fled back to the village in panic."
"That night, the windlass of the Sweetwater Well in the village started spinning wildly. The wooden bucket struck the stone wall of the well and made rumbling sounds."
"When the villagers came out to look, the windlass was turning by itself. There was no person there at all, and no Pokémon either. Every night after that, that Pokémon became even worse with its mischief."
Julian nodded.
"From the sound of it, it should be a Ghost-type Pokémon."
The village chief nodded repeatedly.
"Right, right, right. It’s a ghost causing trouble! Two days ago, the villagers discovered that the Sweetwater Well had actually gone dry, forcing everyone to fetch water from the river outside the village."
"Yesterday morning, we discovered that all that missing water had reappeared in the farmland and almost drowned the crops that had just been planted."
Just then, a strong man appeared in the courtyard carrying two large buckets of water.
"Chief, I brought the water for you!"
Julian raised an eyebrow slightly.
"Is it now stealing even the water you store in your water jars?"
The village chief nodded.
"Yes. That’s why I said the remaining dishes would take a while."
Julian immediately stood up and went to the kitchen, releasing Gallade.
"Gallade, use Foresight."
White light shone from Gallade’s eyes as he swept over the entire kitchen.
He only found a faint cluster of purple-black energy in a corner of the kitchen.
"It seems it really did come here, and it stayed here for quite a while. That’s why this energy trace was left behind."
When the village chief saw that cluster of energy, he immediately shouted excitedly, "Amazing! As expected of Veilstone Gym’s Gym Leader. You discovered the problem as soon as you arrived!"
Gallade originally did not know Foresight.
He had learned from Machamp that Fighting-type moves could not hit Ghost-type Pokémon, while Psychic type was also restrained by Ghost type.
On top of that, Ghost-type Pokémon could generally turn invisible.
But the move Foresight could not only make Fighting-type moves deal damage to Ghost-type Pokémon, it could also break invisibility.
With such a useful move, Gallade naturally asked Machamp for guidance.
Gallade was smart.
After listening to Machamp’s explanation and watching one demonstration, he learned Foresight immediately.
Machamp was so happy.
Then he thought back to the days when he and Julian had taught Darius’s other Pokémon to learn Foresight.
Those days were simply not fit for humans.
The village chief was extremely excited. It seemed the troublesome Ghost Pokémon would be caught tonight.
The villagers could finally have a peaceful sleep.
With water available, the auntie quickly served three more dishes, filling the table completely.
Julian hurriedly said, "Auntie, please sit and eat with us too."
She waved her hand.
"No, there are still two dishes in the kitchen."
The dishes on the table had already started stacking like a tower, yet she still wanted to keep cooking.
"This... Village chief, let her sit down and eat a little."
The village chief quickly waved his hand.
"No rush. Let her finish cooking. We must make sure the two of you eat well."
When the dishes were almost finished, Maylene raised her head and asked, "Auntie, could you cook some noodles? Soaking noodles in this sauce would definitely be delicious."
The auntie immediately stood up.
"I’ll go cook noodles for you now."
Maylene smiled cheerfully and nodded.
"Can you please cook a lot. I have a big appetite."
The sky had completely darkened.
At the village’s rear, the windlass of the Sweetwater Well began creaking and turning.
There was also the rumbling sound of a wooden bucket striking the stone wall.
The village chief was startled.
"I clearly had someone remove the bucket. How can there still be the sound of a bucket?"
Julian smiled.
"For a Ghost Pokémon, stealing a bucket is easy. Village chief, please sit here for a while. I’ll go catch it."
The auntie entered with the noodles.
"The noodles are here!"
Julian and Maylene just happened to stand up and head outside. Julian nodded slightly.
"Please leave the noodles here. We’ll eat them when we come back."
The auntie froze.
If they waited until they came back, wouldn’t the noodles be cold?
When they reached the Sweetwater Well, Julian took out a Poké Ball.
"Gallade, Foresight."
White light shone out. A purple fatty floating in mid-air and shaking the windlass was illuminated by Foresight.
Julian raised an eyebrow.
"It’s Gengar!"
Realising that it had been discovered, Gengar immediately flew into the sky and raised its hand, condensing a pitch-black ball of energy before firing it.
Shadow Ball flickered with black lightning, carrying a deep, cold tail flame as it struck towards Gallade.
Gallade dodged, and Shadow Ball directly corroded a large pit in the yellow earth.
Julian raised an eyebrow.
This purple fatty was very strong!
