After saying goodbye to Ash’s group, Julian looked at Paul.
"Paul, will you be fine travelling alone?"
Paul nodded.
"I’ll be fine. Without her, I’ll actually have an easier time."
Maylene gritted her teeth.
"What’s that supposed to mean? You’re making it sound like I’ve been dragging you down the whole journey!"
Paul asked flatly, "Haven’t you? Who was it that tried to light a fire and nearly set both the tent and the forest on fire?"
Maylene awkwardly lowered her head.
Julian patted him on the shoulder.
"You’ve worked hard, Paul."
Julian took a notebook from his backpack and handed it to him.
"These are some Pokémon massage techniques I collected recently. Study them properly. They can be used after high-intensity training to speed up recovery. They should suit you very well."
Paul trained at high intensity, so he would definitely make full use of these massage techniques.
As for Ash, even if he trained, he would not go as far as Paul.
Julian wondered how long today’s battle would keep Ash’s enthusiasm for training alive.
After all, Ash had once collected all eight Badges and returned to Pallet Town for special training, only to spend most of that time wandering around the area like he was on holiday.
It had barely achieved anything.
Paul accepted the notebook.
"I’ll study it carefully."
In truth, the notebook was a gift he had prepared specifically for Paul.
Although Paul had not said it, Maylene must have caused him quite a bit of trouble.
Of course, he had also gained a free bodyguard.
At least he did not need to worry about savage Pokémon in the forest suddenly attacking them.
Maylene waved.
"Paul, I’ll handle things as quickly as I can and come back to find you. We’ll take part in the Indigo Conference together."
Paul nodded.
"When you go back, don’t just focus on eating and forget to train. The Indigo Conference won’t be simple."
Paul was not worried about whether Maylene could obtain eight Badges.
He simply felt that if Maylene entered the Indigo Conference in her current state, her ranking probably would not be very high.
Maylene’s Pokémon were not weak.
But her command ability was lacking. If she could not draw out their strength, then it might as well not exist.
"I know, I know, stop nagging!"
Maylene made a face at Paul.
Paul ignored her and respectfully said goodbye to Cynthia, Caitlin, and Darach.
"Then I’ll set off first."
After returning to the flying fortress and officially heading back to Sinnoh, Maylene suddenly remembered something.
This time, Julian had come to pick her up, saying there was something important he needed to tell her.
But now they had already set off.
He still had not told her what the important matter was.
"Brother, why exactly did you come to bring me back?"
Julian rubbed Maylene’s head and smiled.
"I found a way that might let you see Mum, and let Mum see you."
"To let Mum know that you’ve grown into a beautiful young woman."
She froze in place.
"See who?"
Julian kept smiling.
"I’m taking you to see Mum."
Maylene looked dazed.
"Brother, who did you say we’re going to see?"
Julian nodded.
"You heard me correctly. We’re going to see Mum."
Maylene hesitated.
"But... Mum, she..."
Maylene lowered her head.
Her mother had died in childbirth.
That had always made her feel as if she had killed her mother.
As if she had caused Dad to become the broken man he was now.
Without Julian’s careful care, Maylene would never have grown into the lively girl she was today.
Julian’s warm palm rested on Maylene’s head, and he pulled her into his arms.
"There’s only a chance. That Pokémon’s power may not be strong enough to truly let us see Mum."
"I hope you won’t be disappointed if it doesn’t happen."
Maylene shook her head.
"Even if there’s only the smallest hope, I still want to try!"
"Mum is already so pretty in photos. She must be even prettier in person!"
Julian nodded.
"That’s right. Mum was ten times prettier than any photo!"
She grinned.
"Then I definitely have to meet her!"
Seeing that Maylene was alright, Caitlin came out from the corner and said excitedly, "Maylene, come on. Let’s go play games in my room!"
"Okay!"
The two girls bounced off to the room to play games.
Only then did Cynthia walk to Julian’s side and say softly, "Maylene looked calm, but you could still feel the sadness inside her."
Julian nodded.
"She has carried this in her heart for years. I can comfort her, but I can’t untie that knot for her."
His voice softened.
"Only Mother can do that."
"When we get back, I’ll tell Dad why we’re going to Alola."
Cynthia nodded.
"It really wouldn’t be good to keep hiding it from him."
Inside Caitlin’s room, as they played games, Caitlin could clearly sense that Maylene was distracted.
She tried hard to comfort her too.
"Maylene, try this. These biscuits are made with butter flown in from Kalos."
Maylene stuffed a biscuit into her mouth and showed a small smile.
"Don’t worry. I’m fine."
After returning to Sinnoh, they parked the flying fortress among the clouds above the outskirts of Veilstone City. Darach stayed behind to manage the airship.
Julian and the others returned to Veilstone Gym’s backyard in a flying car.
Julian said, "There should be challengers coming now. Maylene, look after Cynthia and Caitlin."
"I’ll go receive the challengers."
Caitlin was extremely excited.
"Can I watch? I haven’t really seen many Gym challenge matches before!"
Julian nodded.
"No problem."
After learning that Julian had returned and would accept Trainer challenges, the Trainers waiting in the reception room all wanted Kai to adjust their queue numbers to Julian’s side.
Kai smiled and said, "Master said that since the first Trainer he received had an odd number, he’ll accept challenges from Trainers with odd-numbered reservations."
"As for those evolution rumours, everyone is exaggerating."
But the Trainers did not believe him at all.
They just wanted to be in Julian’s queue.
The "golden touch" did not trigger every time.
But that was exactly why none of them wanted to miss their chance.
What if today was the day?
What if their battle with Julian happened to be the one that pushed their Pokémon past its limit?
But Julian did not care. He only received the odd-numbered challengers.
The Trainers could only sigh that their luck was bad and they had not drawn odd numbers.
After a busy afternoon, he finally had time to start preparing dinner.
At the dining table, Julian looked at Darius.
"Dad, we’re going to Alola."
"The truth is, there’s a Pokémon in Alola that can allow people to see those who have passed away within mist."
"So this time, we’re actually going to Alola to see Mum."
Darius’s eyes widened like a bull’s.
"You said we’re going to see who?"
Julian: "..."
You two really are father and daughter
Your reactions are exactly the same
Was this the denseness of Fighting-type trainers?
"Mum!"
Darius shot to his feet so fast he nearly forgot about dinner.
"Then what are we waiting for? Let’s set off now!"
