Phil bowed.
"Thank you. Once Infernape recovers, I’ll come to challenge again tomorrow."
Receiving Julian’s recognition made Phil extremely excited.
After obtaining his seventh Badge, he had trained hard for more than a month. Only after feeling that his team’s strength had greatly increased and would not improve much more in a short period did he take the train to challenge Veilstone Gym.
Today’s battle exposed his shortcomings in command.
Phil still had gaps in his command style, but Julian had seen enough to recognise the work behind his team.
His Pokémon trusted him. More importantly, they answered him when it mattered.
Sirfetch’d had spent a great deal of stamina using Meteor Assault at almost full force, tearing up the battlefield and leaving the terrain in ruins. Even so, that surprise Brave Bird should have been enough to finish Infernape.
But Infernape had stayed standing.
Not because the damage was light, but because his will refused to give out.
He had forced his body past its limit, dragged out one last burst of strength, and thrown a final Fire Punch before falling.
That alone was enough for Julian to look at him differently.
This Infernape had already begun to understand what it meant to be a true Fighting-type Pokémon. Not perfectly, but the foundation was there.
Julian thought highly of him.
"Phil, in your daily routine, you can do some strength and martial arts training. It’ll help you grasp the essence of Fighting types, which will help you raise Infernape."
A Trainer could have six main Pokémon, or fifteen.
But an ace would always be only one!
Phil’s Infernape had the potential to become an ace.
If Phil and Infernape could go one step further, they would become strong contenders for the championship. A place in the top four should definitely be no problem.
...
After leaving Veilstone Gym, Phil held the Cobble Badge and seriously reflected on the battle just now.
Of the three Pokémon Gym Leader Julian had used, Electabuzz had nothing unusual about him, but he was definitely an elite fighter.
Stantler was still not mature enough. He needed to increase Stantler’s training.
Stamina, strength, technique...
Bronzong did not have too many problems. The issue was that Combusken’s performance had been too shocking.
That powerful Blaze, using willpower to drive Flare Blitz and break through the restraint of Psychic.
It was worth learning from for both him and Bronzong.
Last time, Bronzor had been beaten by Croagunk’s combination and had no ability to fight back.
Perhaps Bronzong’s willpower was not firm enough, causing Psychic’s power to be insufficient and letting Combusken, a Fighting-type Pokémon, break free from it.
As for Hippowdon, he had no problems!
As for Infernape, Phil had thought Infernape would fall after being hit by Brave Bird.
But he had not!
With that final Fire Punch that broke through his limits, once they coordinated future training around it, Phil believed Infernape’s strength would grow rapidly.
Phil raised his head and saw that familiar internet café.
He would go in, log onto the Trainer forum, and study some strength training techniques.
As for martial arts, in order to better train Infernape, Phil had already looked through quite a few.
He only needed to choose some suitable techniques and learn them.
The moment Phil logged onto the Trainer forum, he discovered that the hottest post on the front page was actually a group of bored Trainers discussing whether Lucian of the Elite Four or Volkner the Gym Leader was more handsome.
Damn it!
The hottest post on the front page should belong to Gym Leader Julian!
Discussing looks?
This was the Trainer forum. They should discuss things related to Pokémon!
Although this time, Phil’s Pokémon had not displayed too many dazzling moments besides Infernape...
Phil could use his own performance!
At top speed, Phil wrote a vivid post.
[My Second Battle at Veilstone Gym: The Story Gym Leader Julian and I Have to Tell!]
After posting, Phil notified his friends to help boost the thread, then went to the front-page looks thread to siphon some traffic.
Inside, he saw quite a few Trainers, most likely girls, posting candid street photos of Lucian and Volkner.
Phil looked down on them.
If, the last time he saw Gym Leader Julian, Julian’s looks had only been slightly above Lucian and Volkner...
Then after seeing him again this time, Gym Leader Julian’s looks were simply an overwhelming victory.
Unable to resist, Phil made a post.
[Forever_Burning:Stop arguing. If we’re talking about Champion-level handsome Trainers in Sinnoh, it should obviously be Gym Leader Julian]
[Volkner’s_Rumoured_Girlfriend:You say Julian Veyne is the most handsome, so he’s the most handsome? No photo, no proof. What are you bragging about?]
Phil froze.
He really did not have a photo of Julian.
No. Tomorrow, when he went to challenge Primeape, after the battle ended, he absolutely had to ask Gym Leader Julian’s disciple to help take a group photo.
Then, he would crop Gym Leader Julian out on his own.
He would make this group of lovestruck fools look even more stupid!
...
The battlefield had been turned into sand by Hippowdon, then blown open into a large crater by Sirfetch’d’s Meteor Assault.
Sand had splashed everywhere across the room. That kind of environment obviously could not be used to battle the next two challengers.
Fortunately, the last time Julian had arranged for a construction team to build a platform in the back garden, he had considered that the battlefield might be damaged during battle.
The back-garden platform could be used in an emergency.
They drew simple boundary lines, and a battlefield was ready.
After preparing the battlefield, Julian and Kai brought the Pokémon to repair the original field.
They swept the sand back onto the battlefield and filled in the broken rocks. Then they had Poliwrath, full of water, spray the field.
Finally, Julian clapped his hands.
"Kai, I’ll leave it to your Geodude to help compact the field."
Kai smiled proudly and wiped his nose with his hand.
"Come out, Graveler!"
Julian raised an eyebrow.
"It evolved? As expected of my apprentice."
Kai chuckled.
"It was thanks to the old Gym Leader arranging for me to battle challengers. Geodude evolved into Graveler during those battles."
Julian nodded.
"Train Graveler well. When the time is right, we’ll go to Mt. Coronet to train and help Graveler evolve into Golem."
At that moment, a silver-haired girl weakly poked her head in.
"Um... excuse me. I reserved a Gym challenge for three o’clock..."
Julian walked over.
"I’m Julian Veyne, provisional Gym Leader of Veilstone Gym. Because the Gym Leader has something urgent to handle, I’ll be taking over your challenge."
"Is that alright?"
The silver-haired girl looked at Julian’s face, and her cheeks turned slightly red. After reacting, she hurriedly shook her head.
"I have no problem!"
Wait!
He said his name is Julian Veyne?
The silver-haired girl asked, "Hello, are you the Julian everyone calls the Miracle Mentor?"
Julian was somewhat helpless.
"I don’t perform any miracles. It’s just something people like to call me."
The silver-haired girl bowed.
"I’m Kizara from Eindoak. Please take care of me."
Julian raised an eyebrow.
"Eindoak?"
Kizara introduced it.
"My hometown is a city between the mountains of the Unova region. Its landmark is the Sword of the Vale."
"We have some of the finest Berries in Unova. If you ever have the chance, Gym Leader Julian, you’re very welcome to visit my hometown."
