With Julian’s encouragement, Combusken’s flames burned even hotter.
He broke free from Psychic in an instant and slammed headfirst into Bronzong.
The green Safeguard shattered, and scorching fire poured into Bronzong’s body.
Bronzong fell to the ground in pain and stopped moving.
But this was Combusken’s first time using Flare Blitz. The enormous recoil also knocked him unconscious.
In truth, it was not only Flare Blitz. Bronzong’s Psychic had also taken away a large amount of Combusken’s stamina.
Combusken felt regretful.
He had only defeated one Bronzong. He had not even seen what the third Pokémon was.
But Julian was very pleased.
Learning Flare Blitz at Combusken’s age was absolutely the mark of a natural genius.
Julian thought for a moment.
"I’ll leave this to you, Sirfetch’d."
Holding his long leek sword and shield, Sirfetch’d maintained his high fighting spirit.
Although he had not been able to go to the Great Crater of Paldea, Julian believed that there should be similar environments in Sinnoh.
Most likely on Mt. Coronet. Julian planned to ask Riley.
Riley travelled around helping others, so he should know some special training grounds.
And the next time Julian went to Alola, he could bring Sirfetch’d along as well.
The Alola islands should have quite a few caves filled with energy.
"Go, Hippowdon."
Seeing Phil send out Hippowdon, a string of question marks appeared above Julian’s head.
Bro, if you had Hippowdon, why didn’t you send it out against Electabuzz and Combusken?
Seeing Julian’s gaze, Phil also felt somewhat embarrassed.
Just now, his mind had been focused entirely on proving himself, so he had subconsciously sent out his Pokémon in the same order as his last challenge.
He also really had not expected a little Combusken to suddenly lose his temper, learn Flare Blitz, and trade one for one with his Bronzong.
Hippowdon opened its huge mouth, quickly spreading a Sandstorm across the entire battlefield.
"Swords Dance."
The sandstorm would block Sirfetch’d’s vision, but it was also an excellent chance to strengthen.
Sirfetch’d stood on a rock and spun his body, scattering the sand around him.
His Attack rose sharply.
Phil did not dare just watch Sirfetch’d set up.
"Rock Slide!"
"Brick Break!"
Large rocks fell one after another.
Sirfetch’d did not need to cut every single one apart.
He moved nimbly through the falling stones, only swinging his sword to cut apart the ones he could not avoid.
Seeing Sirfetch’d swing his shield and push a rock aside, Julian’s eyes lit up.
Using the shield to perform Rock Smash.
He had not expected Sirfetch’d to truly develop the technique he had only mentioned in passing.
"Sand Tomb!"
Sand Tomb could not trap Sirfetch’d, but with Hippowdon buried in the sand, it was enough to place him in an undefeated position.
With Sirfetch’d’s small frame, and with the ground turned into soft sand, there was no way he could use Earthquake to force Hippowdon out.
Julian smiled.
Phil’s response this time really was clever.
But he was underestimating Sirfetch’d too much.
"Swords Dance."
"Thunder Fang!"
Hippowdon suddenly burst out of the sand. His great fangs crackled with electricity as he bit towards Sirfetch’d standing on the rock.
Sirfetch’d leapt away nimbly, and Hippowdon crushed the rock in one bite.
Then he quickly burrowed back into the sand.
Sirfetch’d brought his sword down, but only scattered a cloud of sand.
"Swords Dance."
"Sandstorm!"
Although relying on Sandstorm to wear down Sirfetch’d’s stamina was not exactly an honourable method, it could guarantee victory.
Phil could no longer care about such things.
The flying sand did indeed wear down some of Sirfetch’d’s stamina.
But after three Swords Dance boosts, Sirfetch’d’s Attack had already reached its limit.
Mere sand could no longer stop Sirfetch’d!
"Meteor Assault!"
Sirfetch’d levelled his long sword and leapt into the sky.
Wrapped in bright yellow light, he suddenly charged towards the sea of sand.
The powerful force blasted the sand away, directly exposing the hidden Hippowdon.
Long sword held straight, Sirfetch’d continued charging.
Phil shouted with all his strength.
"Hippowdon, Double-Edge!"
Sirfetch’d was like the most dazzling meteor. His sword pierced Hippowdon’s back.
Hippowdon was driven straight into the crater, limbs spread as he lay flat on the ground.
He had lost the ability to battle.
Phil muttered to himself, "Today, I finally learned what Meteor Assault really means."
Meteor Assault
As the name suggested, its power was like a meteor falling to earth.
Charging into the ground like a meteor, combined with three Swords Dance boosts, and turning the field into its current state, that was already Sirfetch’d holding back.
Phil recalled Hippowdon and gripped the first Poké Ball he had ever obtained.
"Infernape, burn with our courage!"
Even while left at home, Sirfetch’d had still completed his training meticulously.
With Meteor Assault developed to such a high level, Julian felt very pleased.
He felt even more that he should not have let Sirfetch’d miss the Great Crater of Paldea trip.
Later, he would have Gallade spar with Sirfetch’d more often.
Gallade had gained quite a lot from facing Iron Valiant this time.
Sirfetch’d was also a swordsman, so he would definitely learn plenty from Gallade.
Phil’s growth also satisfied Julian.
Not many Trainers had received their eighth Badge from him.
But Phil, standing in front of him now, could already count as one of them.
Julian hoped this battle would let him go further in the Lily of the Valley Conference.
The Infernape before him already had the air of a strong Pokémon, but it was still immature and needed more training.
"Infernape, Mach Punch!"
"Protect!"
Sirfetch’d raised his shield, and a green barrier blocked Infernape’s fist.
"Throat Chop!"
The long sword carried black light as it swiftly stabbed towards Infernape’s abdomen.
Infernape raised both hands and grabbed the sword.
Sirfetch’d pulled the sword back, then suddenly slammed his shield towards Infernape.
Infernape raised an arm to block and was forced back.
"Flare Blitz!"
At close range, the blazing body rapidly burning with flames slammed intimately into Sirfetch’d.
Sirfetch’d only had time to raise his shield in front of him.
He curled his body as much as possible, reducing the damage.
Infernape suddenly exerted force and pushed Sirfetch’d flying back.
Unexpectedly, Sirfetch’d suddenly leapt into the air.
Phil thought Sirfetch’d was going to use Meteor Assault.
"Infernape, Flamethrower!"
But Sirfetch’d’s body suddenly became surrounded by white air currents.
He curved around the pillar of Flamethrower and struck Infernape’s abdomen.
Even Julian was somewhat surprised.
"Brave Bird. He’s already learned it?"
Julian had only thought that learning a Flying-type move would not hurt Sirfetch’d, so he had let Sirfetch’d study it in his free time.
Perhaps it would be useful one day.
In truth, knowing Aerial Ace would already have been enough.
In a Fighting-type mirror match, suddenly stabbing an opponent with Aerial Ace was already enough damage.
Sirfetch’d had followed Gallade’s example and had long since learned Aerial Ace.
But Julian had not expected Sirfetch’d to surpass the original and learn Brave Bird too.
Infernape landed awkwardly, but had not yet lost the ability to battle.
He swung a flaming fist, wanting to attack Sirfetch’d.
Sirfetch’d spun his body and slashed Infernape’s back.
Aerial Ace!
Infernape fell with unwillingness in his eyes.
Phil recalled Infernape, his gaze burning with passion.
"Thank you for your guidance, Gym Leader Julian. I gained a lot from today’s battle."
Julian had Kai bring over the Cobble Badge and handed it to Phil.
"Your performance is worthy of this Badge. But there are still many areas where you can further optimise your techniques and power."
"Don’t relax your training just because you’ve collected eight Badges."
Holding the Cobble Badge, Phil asked excitedly, "Gym Leader Julian, I have an unreasonable request. Could my Infernape spar with your Primeape tomorrow?"
The corner of Julian’s mouth twitched.
Why does everyone like fighting Primeape?
You wrote that post yourself. Don’t tell me you actually believed it?
Julian smiled.
"No problem. Since you want to spar, I’m very happy to welcome it."
This was perfect. He could have Forever_Burning make a post and clarify the rumours.
